To fill out a money order for rent, write your landlord’s full legal name on the “Pay to the Order of” line, add your name and rental address in the purchaser fields, note the month and unit number on the memo line, and sign the front where it says “Purchaser.” Leave the back blank — that side is for your landlord to endorse. Then tear off the receipt stub and keep it until the payment clears.
Do it in permanent black ink, and do it at the counter right after you buy it. A blank money order is close to cash; anyone who picks one up can write themselves in as the payee. A gel pen is better than a ballpoint because gel ink resists check washing, a fraud technique that dissolves standard ink so the payee can be rewritten.
The Five Fields on a Rent Money Order
Pay to the Order of
Write your landlord’s full legal name, or, if your lease is with a property management company, the business name exactly as it appears on the lease. Only the party written on this line can cash the money order.1USPS. Money Orders Check the spelling against your lease before you commit ink to paper. Strikethroughs or corrections on this line can cause a bank to reject the money order as potentially altered, and you’ll pay a replacement fee to start over.
Your Name and Address
Below the payee line are fields for the purchaser. Write your full legal name and the address of the rental unit. This confirms you as the sender and helps the landlord or property manager match the payment to the right tenant, which matters in buildings where the office processes dozens of rent payments each month.
Memo or “Payment For”
Use the memo line (sometimes labeled “Payment for” or “Account number”) to earmark the payment. Write the month and unit, something like “June 2026 Rent — Unit 4B.” This keeps the landlord from applying your money toward a disputed late fee or a prior month’s balance.
Purchaser’s Signature (Front)
Sign the front in the space marked “Purchaser’s signature,” “From,” “Signer,” or “Drawer.” That signature authorizes the transfer of funds.
The Back — Leave It Alone
Do not sign the back. That area is reserved for the payee’s endorsement when they cash or deposit the money order.2Western Union. Send Money Safely: The Ultimate Guide to Using Money Orders Endorsing the back yourself effectively makes the money order payable to whoever ends up holding it.
When Rent Is More Than One Money Order Covers
A single USPS money order tops out at $1,000.1USPS. Money Orders Money orders issued through MoneyGram or Western Union at retail counters are often capped at $500. If your rent is $1,400, you’ll need at least two.
Fill out every field on each money order the same way: same payee name, same purchaser info, same month. On the memo line, label them as a set — “June 2026 Rent — Unit 4B (1 of 2)” and “(2 of 2)” — so the landlord knows they go together. Keep every receipt stub.
One boundary worth knowing: buying $3,000 or more in money orders during a single visit triggers federal recordkeeping requirements under the Bank Secrecy Act, even when the amount is split across smaller money orders.3eCFR. 31 CFR 1010.415 – Purchases of Bank Checks and Drafts, Cashiers Checks, Money Orders and Travelers Checks Most monthly rent payments don’t come close, but bring valid ID if you’re prepaying several months at once.
Giving It to Your Landlord and Proving You Paid
Before you hand the money order over, detach the receipt stub on the bottom or side. The stub holds the serial number and the issuer’s contact information, and it’s your only proof the money order exists.2Western Union. Send Money Safely: The Ultimate Guide to Using Money Orders Store it in a folder or envelope, and take a phone photo as a backup.
Hand-delivering to the rental office is the simplest option. Ask for a written receipt from the landlord or property manager showing the date, the amount, your unit number, and the period covered. A money order receipt proves you bought the instrument; it doesn’t prove you handed it to your landlord. In an eviction proceeding, that distinction matters, and the landlord’s signed receipt closes the gap.
If you mail the payment, use certified mail with return receipt requested so you have a signed, dated record of delivery. Once it’s gone, you can check whether the money order has been cashed by entering the serial number on the issuer’s website or calling customer service.
If the Money Order Is Lost or Stolen
Lost and stolen money orders can be replaced, but it costs money and takes time. For a USPS money order, file PS Form 6401 (Money Order Inquiry) at any Post Office, bringing the customer receipt and valid ID. The processing fee is $21 per money order, and the investigation can take up to 60 days.1USPS. Money Orders USPS will either refund you or send a copy of the cashed money order if someone has already redeemed it. You can check inquiry status at 1-866-974-2733.4USPS. Western Union charges a $15 non-refundable fee to research or replace a missing money order, and turnaround can stretch weeks.5Western Union Financial Services, Inc. Money Order Research or Photocopy Request Either way, you’ll need the original receipt. Without the serial number, the issuer has no way to pick your transaction out of millions.
While the investigation runs, write to your landlord explaining the situation and share whatever tracking information you have. Rent obligations don’t pause during an inquiry, so work out a plan in writing so a delay doesn’t turn into a default.
