To file taxes as a babysitter, you report your babysitting income on a federal tax return once your net earnings for the year reach $400. Most sitters file as independent contractors: you list your income and business expenses on Schedule C, calculate self-employment tax on Schedule SE, and attach both to Form 1040. If a family instead treats you as a household employee and gives you a W-2, your income goes on the wages line of Form 1040 and the family handles the Social Security and Medicare piece.
Do You Have to File
The IRS requires a return once your net self-employment earnings hit $400 for the year.1Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 554, Self-Employment Tax Net earnings means what’s left after you subtract your business expenses from what families paid you, not the gross amount. The $400 rule applies whether you’re 15 or 50, whether your parents claim you as a dependent, and whether you have other income.
Income tax is a separate question. For 2026, a single filer’s standard deduction is $16,100, so a sitter with no other income and modest earnings usually won’t owe income tax even when self-employment tax is due.2Internal Revenue Service. IRS Releases Tax Inflation Adjustments for Tax Year 2026 If a parent claims you as a dependent, your standard deduction is smaller, calculated from your earned income up to the regular amount.3Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 551, Standard Deduction
File even if you’re under the threshold when a family withheld federal income tax from your pay; that’s the only way to get it refunded. If you were required to file and didn’t, the IRS can prepare a substitute return without any of your deductions, which almost always overstates what you owe.4Taxpayer Advocate Service. Are You an Employee or an Independent Contractor
How you file starts with how the family that hires you fits into IRS categories. If a family controls when you arrive, how you care for the children, and what you do while you’re there, the IRS generally considers you a household employee of that family. If you set your hours, work for several families, and decide how to do the job, you’re an independent contractor. Most sitters juggling multiple clients on their own schedule land in the contractor bucket.
When a family treats you as a household employee and pays you $3,000 or more in cash wages during 2026, that family must withhold 7.65% from your pay for Social Security and Medicare, pay a matching 7.65% themselves, and issue you a W-2.5Internal Revenue Service. Publication 926 (2026), Household Employer’s Tax Guide Sitters under 18 are generally exempt from that withholding unless babysitting is their principal occupation; a student’s principal occupation isn’t babysitting, so the exemption applies. As an employee, you enter the W-2 wages on Form 1040 and stop. No Schedule C, no Schedule SE.
As an independent contractor, no one withholds anything. Everything below applies to you.
Records to Keep Through the Year
Set up a simple log the first time you take a job and add to it as you go. For each family: dates worked, hours or sessions, and what you were paid. Screenshots or exported histories from Venmo, PayPal, Zelle, or Cash App work as backup for digital payments. Every dollar from those apps is taxable whether or not the app ever sends you a Form 1099-K; that form only arrives if your payments for goods or services on the platform top $20,000 across more than 200 transactions.6Internal Revenue Service. IRS Issues FAQs on Form 1099-K Threshold
Track expenses in real time. Save receipts for craft supplies, snacks bought for the children, toys, first-aid classes, and anything else you buy specifically for the work. If you drive between families’ homes, note the date, destination, and miles for each trip. Hold on to all of it for at least three years after you file.7Internal Revenue Service. How Long Should I Keep Records?
Don’t expect a 1099-NEC from most families. Parents hiring a sitter aren’t running a business, so they aren’t required to send you one. A business client (a daycare, an agency, an event company) does have to send a 1099-NEC if it paid you $2,000 or more as a contractor in 2026.8Internal Revenue Service. Form 1099 NEC and Independent Contractors Whether a form shows up or not, you report the full amount you were paid.
Report Income and Expenses on Schedule C
Schedule C, Profit or Loss from Business, is where you list what you earned and what you spent to earn it.9Internal Revenue Service. About Schedule C (Form 1040), Profit or Loss from Business (Sole Proprietorship) At the top, enter NAICS code 624410 for childcare services. Enter your total receipts for the year, then work through the expense categories below.
Expenses common to babysitting work include:
- Supplies and materials bought for the children: craft supplies, coloring books, small toys, snacks.
- Mileage between different families’ homes or to pick up supplies. For 2026 the standard mileage rate is 72.5 cents per mile, which you can use in place of tracking actual gas and maintenance costs. Either way, keep the mileage log.10Internal Revenue Service. 2026 Standard Mileage Rates Notice 26-10
- A portion of your housing costs (rent, utilities, insurance) if you regularly watch children in your home, based on the square footage and time used for care.
- CPR certification, first-aid classes, and early childhood courses tied to your work.
Only ordinary and necessary business costs qualify. Personal groceries, your own commuting from home to a single regular job, and household items you’d buy anyway are not deductible. Subtract your expenses from your receipts. That figure is your net profit, and it’s what carries over to Schedule SE and to your Form 1040.
Calculate Self-Employment Tax on Schedule SE
Self-employment tax covers the Social Security and Medicare contributions an employer would normally split with a worker. Since you’re on both sides of that arrangement, you pay both halves: 15.3% total, made up of 12.4% for Social Security and 2.9% for Medicare.11Internal Revenue Service. Self-Employment Tax (Social Security and Medicare Taxes)
The tax applies to 92.35% of your net profit, not the full amount.1Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 554, Self-Employment Tax A quick example: on $5,000 of net profit, the calculation is $5,000 × 0.9235 × 0.153, or about $707. You do the math on Schedule SE and carry the total to Form 1040.12Internal Revenue Service. About Schedule SE (Form 1040), Self-Employment Tax
You then get to deduct half of that self-employment tax as an adjustment to income on Form 1040. It doesn’t lower the self-employment tax itself, but it reduces the income subject to regular income tax.1Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 554, Self-Employment Tax
Quarterly Estimated Payments During the Year
Because nothing is withheld from your babysitting pay, the IRS expects you to send in tax as you earn it. You generally need to make quarterly estimated payments if you’ll owe $1,000 or more for the year after subtracting any withholding and refundable credits.13Internal Revenue Service. Form 1040-ES, 2026 Estimated Tax for Individuals
For 2026 income, the four deadlines are:
- April 15, 2026, for January through March.
- June 15, 2026, for April and May.
- September 15, 2026, for June through August.
- January 15, 2027, for September through December.
A deadline falling on a weekend or federal holiday moves to the next business day.14Internal Revenue Service. Estimated Tax You’ll avoid an underpayment penalty by paying at least 90% of the current year’s tax or 100% of last year’s tax, whichever is smaller. If your prior-year adjusted gross income topped $150,000, the safe harbor is 110% of last year’s tax instead.15Internal Revenue Service. Underpayment of Estimated Tax by Individuals Penalty If this is your first year with any tax liability, no estimated payments are required for the year; you’ll just settle up when you file.
How to Submit the Return
You have a few options. IRS Free File offers guided tax software at no cost if your adjusted gross income is $89,000 or less, and Free File Fillable Forms are available at any income level for filers comfortable preparing their own return.16Internal Revenue Service. E-File: Do Your Taxes for Free Commercial tax software walks you through Schedule C and Schedule SE line by line. The IRS Direct File tool doesn’t currently handle self-employment income, so it’s not an option for independent contractor sitters.
To file on paper, mail Form 1040 with Schedule C, Schedule SE, and any other schedules to the processing center for your state. If you owe money, IRS Direct Pay lets you send it electronically from a bank account for free.
What Happens if You Skip Filing
If you were required to file and didn’t, the IRS charges a failure-to-file penalty of 5% of the unpaid tax for each month or partial month the return is late, capped at 25%.17Internal Revenue Service. Failure to File Penalty Interest runs on any unpaid balance from the original due date. If you can’t pay the full amount, file anyway and set up a payment plan with the IRS; that keeps the failure-to-file penalty from stacking on top of what you owe.
