To file taxes as a 1099 independent contractor, you report your self-employment income and business expenses on Schedule C, calculate your self-employment tax on Schedule SE, attach both to Form 1040, and send in quarterly estimated payments during the year so you’re not hit with a large balance and a penalty in April. You owe federal income tax and self-employment tax once your net earnings from contracting reach $400 for the year.1Internal Revenue Service. Self-Employed Individuals Tax Center No employer is withholding anything for you, so the reporting, the deductions, and the payment schedule are all your responsibility.
Gather Your Income Records First
Start by pulling together every document that shows what clients paid you. For 2026, any client who paid you $2,000 or more for services must send you a Form 1099-NEC.2Internal Revenue Service. Form 1099-NEC and Independent Contractors That threshold rose from $600, so you may see fewer of these forms than in past years. You still have to report every dollar you earned, including payments from smaller clients who never sent you a 1099.1Internal Revenue Service. Self-Employed Individuals Tax Center
If clients paid you through a payment app or online marketplace, you may also get a Form 1099-K. Third-party payment networks issue this form when your payments for goods or services exceed $20,000 across more than 200 transactions. Card payments are reported on a 1099-K regardless of the amount.3Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your Form 1099-K
Cross-check every 1099 against your own bank statements. Confirm your name and Social Security number or EIN are correct, since the IRS matches these fields to your return.4Internal Revenue Service. General Instructions for Certain Information Returns (2025) If a form is wrong, ask the payer for a corrected version before you file.
Report Income and Expenses on Schedule C
Schedule C (Form 1040) is where your business lives on your tax return. Enter your total gross receipts at the top, then list your allowable business expenses in Part II. The difference is your net profit or loss, and that number does double duty: it feeds your regular income tax calculation and it’s also the starting point for your self-employment tax.5Internal Revenue Service. 2025 Instructions for Schedule C (Form 1040)
Accuracy on this form matters more than on almost anything else you file. Every legitimate deduction reduces both taxes at once. Every dollar of income you leave off shows up in the IRS matching system the moment a 1099 hits their database.
Deductions That Actually Lower Your Bill
A business expense is deductible when it’s ordinary in your line of work and necessary for running the business.6Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 162 – Trade or Business Expenses A few categories come up for almost every contractor.
Vehicle Mileage
If you drive your personal car for business, keep a log with the date, destination, and purpose of each trip.7Internal Revenue Service. Publication 463 (2024), Travel, Gift, and Car Expenses You then pick one of two methods. The standard mileage rate for 2026 is 72.5 cents per business mile and covers gas, insurance, maintenance, and depreciation in one figure.8Internal Revenue Service. IRS Sets 2026 Business Standard Mileage Rate at 72.5 Cents Per Mile, Up 2.5 Cents The actual-expense method deducts your real costs based on the business-use percentage of your driving. If you use the standard rate the first year, you can switch to actual expenses later, but not always the other way around.
Home Office
You can deduct part of your housing costs if a portion of your home is used exclusively and regularly as your main place of business.9Internal Revenue Service. How Small Business Owners Can Deduct Their Home Office From Their Taxes Exclusively is the operative word. A desk shoved in your bedroom that also holds personal items generally won’t qualify. Under the regular method, you calculate the office’s share of your home’s square footage and apply that percentage to rent or mortgage interest, utilities, and insurance.
Equipment, Supplies, and Professional Fees
Tools, software, and office supplies you buy for the business are deductible in the year of purchase. Bigger equipment like computers or cameras can often be written off in full the year you buy it under Section 179 rather than depreciated over several years.5Internal Revenue Service. 2025 Instructions for Schedule C (Form 1040) Fees you pay to accountants, attorneys, and other professionals for business work are deductible too.
Startup Costs
Launched the business this year? You can deduct up to $5,000 of startup expenses right away, things like market research, pre-opening advertising, and consulting. The $5,000 allowance phases out dollar-for-dollar once total startup costs pass $50,000, and any remaining balance is spread over 180 months.10Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 195 – Start-Up Expenditures
Qualified Business Income Deduction
Sole proprietors may qualify to deduct up to 20% of net business income from taxable income under the qualified business income deduction.11Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 199A – Qualified Business Income The full deduction is available below certain income thresholds, and above those thresholds it’s reduced or eliminated. Specified service trades like law, accounting, health care, and consulting face stricter phase-outs. You calculate it on Form 8995 or 8995-A. This deduction reduces income tax only, not self-employment tax.
Retirement Contributions
Two retirement plans work especially well for contractors. A SEP IRA lets you contribute up to 25% of net self-employment earnings, capped at $69,000 for 2026, and the contribution is deductible.12Internal Revenue Service. SEP Contribution Limits (Including Grandfathered SARSEPs) A solo 401(k) lets you defer up to $24,500 in 2026 as the employee, plus contribute up to 25% of net earnings as the employer. Contributors age 50 and up can add an $8,000 catch-up, and those age 60 through 63 can add $11,250 instead.13Internal Revenue Service. 401(k) Limit Increases to $24,500 for 2026; IRA Limit Increases to $7,500
Self-Employed Health Insurance
If you pay your own medical, dental, or vision premiums, deduct them as an adjustment to income on Schedule 1 rather than as an itemized deduction.14Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 7206 The plan must be established under your business, and you can’t take the deduction for any month you were eligible for a subsidized plan through a spouse’s employer. The deduction covers you, your spouse, your dependents, and children under 27.
Records Matter
Every deduction should be backed by a receipt, invoice, or bank record showing the date, amount, and business purpose. If the IRS reviews your return and you can’t document an expense, the deduction is disallowed and you owe the tax plus interest. Digital records work fine, including photos of receipts and exports from your accounting software.
Calculate Self-Employment Tax on Schedule SE
Beyond regular income tax, contractors owe self-employment tax to fund Social Security and Medicare. It’s 15.3% of your net self-employment earnings, split as 12.4% for Social Security and 2.9% for Medicare.15eCFR. 26 CFR 1.1401-1 – Tax on Self-Employment Income Traditional employees split these with their employer. You pay both halves.
Schedule SE handles the math. Your Schedule C net profit is first multiplied by 92.35% to get the amount subject to self-employment tax.16Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 554, Self-Employment Tax For 2026, the 12.4% Social Security portion applies only to the first $184,500 of net self-employment earnings; anything above that ceiling is subject only to the 2.9% Medicare portion.17Social Security Administration. Contribution and Benefit Base
One partial offset: you deduct half of your self-employment tax on Schedule 1 when calculating adjusted gross income, and you get this deduction whether or not you itemize.16Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 554, Self-Employment Tax It reduces your income tax, not the self-employment tax itself.
Pay Estimated Taxes Every Quarter
Since nobody withholds tax from your pay, the IRS wants its money as you earn it. You generally have to make estimated payments four times a year if you expect to owe $1,000 or more at filing time.18Internal Revenue Service. 2026 Form 1040-ES Estimated Tax for Individuals Each payment covers both income tax and self-employment tax. Form 1040-ES walks you through the calculation.
