To file your federal taxes online, gather your income documents, pick an e-filing platform that fits your income and situation, complete the return, and submit it electronically with a self-select PIN. The 2026 filing season opened January 26, 2026, for tax year 2025 returns, and the deadline is April 15, 2026.1Internal Revenue Service. IRS Opens 2026 Filing Season Most individual taxpayers can e-file for free or at modest cost depending on income and complexity.
Gather Your Documents First
Open no software until your paperwork is in one place. A missing form is the fastest way to trigger an IRS underreporting notice weeks later.
- Social Security Numbers or ITINs for you, your spouse if filing jointly, and every dependent.2Internal Revenue Service. Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)
- W-2s from every employer. Enter the numbers exactly as printed.
- 1099 forms for interest (1099-INT), dividends (1099-DIV), freelance or contract work (1099-NEC), and payment app or card transactions (1099-K).
- Form 1098-E if you paid $600 or more in student loan interest.3Internal Revenue Service. Form 1098-E Student Loan Interest Statement 2025
- Last year’s adjusted gross income, which the software uses to verify your identity when you e-sign. It’s on line 11 of your prior Form 1040. If you can’t find it, request a free transcript through your IRS online account.4Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 1040 (2025)
One note if you’re self-employed: even if payments through apps like Venmo or PayPal fell under the 1099-K reporting threshold and you never receive the form, you still owe tax on the income.5Internal Revenue Service. IRS Issues FAQs on Form 1099-K Threshold The form only decides whether the IRS gets its own copy.
Pick a Filing Platform
Your income and comfort with tax forms decide which option makes sense. The IRS partners with commercial companies to offer several free and paid paths.
IRS Free File Guided Software
If your 2025 adjusted gross income was $89,000 or less, you qualify for IRS Free File and can use brand-name tax software at no cost.6Internal Revenue Service. 2026 Tax Filing Season Opens With Several Free Filing Options Available Each participating company sets its own eligibility rules within that cap, so you may need to compare a few offers. Active-duty military members are also eligible. The software asks plain-language questions and fills in the correct forms behind the scenes.
Free File Fillable Forms
Over the $89,000 cap, or just prefer working directly with the IRS forms? Free File Fillable Forms lets anyone e-file at no cost regardless of income.7Internal Revenue Service. Free File Fillable Forms It does basic math but offers little guidance and won’t suggest deductions or flag mistakes. You’ll need a U.S. cell phone number that can receive text messages for identity verification.
Commercial Tax Software
Paid platforms like TurboTax, H&R Block, and TaxAct offer interview-style questions, error checking, audit alerts, and imports that pull W-2 and 1099 data directly from employers and banks. A straightforward W-2 return might cost nothing on some platforms; self-employment income, rental properties, or investment sales can push the price above $100. Most also charge a separate fee for the state return.
IRS Direct File Is Not Available This Season
The IRS piloted Direct File in 2024 as a way to file with the government directly at no cost. The agency has confirmed Direct File is not available for the 2026 filing season, and no relaunch date has been announced. If you used it last year, choose one of the options above for your 2025 return.
Don’t Forget Your State Return
Filing federally does not file your state taxes. If you live in a state with an income tax, you’ll typically need a separate state return. Most commercial software offers state filing as a paid add-on, some states run their own free e-filing portals through the department of revenue, and some Free File partners include free state filing in their offers. Availability varies by provider and state.
Commercial software usually pulls your federal data into the state return so you’re not re-entering everything. State rules differ from federal rules, though, so review the state sections carefully rather than assuming everything carries over.
Signing and Submitting
Once your income, deductions, and credits are entered, the last step is signing electronically. You create a five-digit self-select PIN (any combination except all zeros) and verify your identity with your date of birth and either your prior-year AGI or last year’s self-select PIN.8Internal Revenue Service. Self-Select PIN Method for Forms 1040 and 4868 The electronic signature carries the same legal weight as ink on paper. You’re attesting under penalty of perjury that the return is accurate.
After you submit, the IRS typically sends an acceptance or rejection notice within 24 to 48 hours. A rejection notice includes an error code. Common causes are a mismatched Social Security Number, a prior-year AGI that doesn’t match IRS records, or a dependent already claimed on another return. Fix the issue and resubmit at no penalty. Accepted returns come back with a submission ID that serves as your receipt.
If You Can’t File by April 15
The deadline for 2025 returns is April 15, 2026.9Internal Revenue Service. When to File You can request an automatic six-month extension to October 15, 2026, in three electronic ways:
- Pay online through IRS Direct Pay or another method and check the box indicating the payment is for an extension. You’ll get a confirmation number without filing a separate form.
- Request the extension through IRS Free File.
- E-file Form 4868 through an IRS partner or tax professional. You’ll estimate what you owe for the year.
An extension gives you extra time to file, not extra time to pay.10Internal Revenue Service. Get an Extension to File Your Tax Return You still owe an estimate of your tax by April 15, or interest and late-payment penalties start accruing. And if you can’t pay in full, file anyway: the failure-to-file penalty is ten times the failure-to-pay penalty, so filing on time and paying what you can beats doing neither.
Paying What You Owe
If your return shows a balance due, the IRS accepts several electronic payment methods.
- IRS Direct Pay is a free bank transfer from a checking or savings account at a U.S. financial institution. You’ll need your routing and account numbers, and each payment requires identity verification using prior-year return information.11Internal Revenue Service. Direct Pay Help
- Debit or credit card payments go through third-party processors that charge a convenience fee. Personal credit cards run 1.75% to 1.85% of the payment, with a $2.50 minimum. On a $5,000 tax bill, that’s roughly $88 to $93 in fees.12Internal Revenue Service. Pay Your Taxes by Debit or Credit Card or Digital Wallet
- If you can’t pay in full, apply online for an installment agreement. Setup fees range from $22 for automatic bank withdrawals to $69 for manual monthly payments, and low-income taxpayers may qualify for waived or reduced fees.13Internal Revenue Service. Apply Online for a Payment Plan
Direct Pay works for most people. No fees, no middleman, and the payment posts quickly. Credit cards only make sense if the rewards outweigh the processing fee, which is rare at 1.75% or higher.
Tracking Your Refund
If the IRS owes you money, the Where’s My Refund tool on IRS.gov or the IRS2Go app is the reliable way to check.14Internal Revenue Service. Refunds Status becomes available about 24 hours after the IRS accepts your e-filed return.15Internal Revenue Service. IRS Announces First Day of 2026 Filing Season The tracker shows three stages: return received, refund approved, and refund sent.
Most e-filed returns with direct deposit produce a refund within 21 days of acceptance.16Internal Revenue Service. Why It May Take Longer Than 21 Days Returns claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit take longer because federal law requires the IRS to hold those refunds until mid-February. If the tool says your return needs additional review, wait. Calling won’t speed it up.
Add an Identity Protection PIN
Tax-related identity theft happens when someone files a fraudulent return using your Social Security Number to grab your refund. The IRS Identity Protection PIN program blocks that: you get a unique six-digit number that must appear on any return filed under your SSN, and returns without it are rejected.17Internal Revenue Service. Get an Identity Protection PIN
Anyone with an SSN or ITIN can enroll. The fastest route is your IRS online account, where the IP PIN option sits on your profile page. If you can’t verify your identity online and your AGI is under $84,000 ($168,000 if married filing jointly), you can submit Form 15227 and receive your PIN by mail in four to six weeks. In person at a Taxpayer Assistance Center is the fallback. Once you’re enrolled, the IRS issues a new IP PIN each year. You can request one for dependents too, which is worth doing because children’s Social Security Numbers are frequent targets.
