How to File ITR-1 Sahaj: Eligibility, Regime, and Deadlines

To file ITR-1 Sahaj for Assessment Year 2026-27, confirm you qualify as a resident individual with total income up to Rs. 50 lakh from salary or pension, up to two house properties, and a few other permitted sources, then file online at incometax.gov.in using your Form 16 and Form 26AS, choose between the old and new tax regimes inside the form, submit by July 31, 2026, and e-verify within 30 days. The form itself is the simplest return in the ITR family, but the eligibility rules and the regime choice decide whether you can use it and whether you’ll pay the right amount of tax.

Confirm You Qualify for ITR-1

You can file ITR-1 only if every one of these applies for the financial year:

  • You are a resident and ordinarily resident of India.
  • Your total income from all sources does not exceed Rs. 50 lakh.
  • Your income comes from salary, wages, or pension (including family pension).
  • You own no more than two house properties with rental or notional income. ITR-1 was limited to a single property in earlier years; the two-property allowance is current for AY 2026-27.
  • Other income is limited to interest from savings accounts, fixed deposits, post office deposits, income tax refund interest, dividends, or family pension.
  • Long-term capital gains under Section 112A are up to Rs. 1.25 lakh, from listed equity shares or equity-oriented mutual funds. This is a new addition for AY 2026-27.
  • Any agricultural income is Rs. 5,000 or less.1Income Tax Department. ITR-1 Sahaj – Indian Income Tax Return

Family pension sits under “income from other sources” on the form, and the standard family pension deduction under Section 57(iia) has its own line within ITR-1.2Income Tax Department. File ITR-1 (Sahaj) Online User Manual – Section: 3.2 Who Can Use It?

When You Cannot Use ITR-1

Some situations push you out of this form regardless of income, and you’ll need ITR-2, ITR-3, or another form instead. The common disqualifiers:

  • Any business, freelancing, or professional income.
  • Long-term capital gains above Rs. 1.25 lakh under Section 112A, any short-term capital gains, or gains from property, gold, or unlisted shares.
  • Three or more house properties.
  • Serving as a director of any company, paid or unpaid.
  • Holding unlisted equity shares at any point during the year.
  • Foreign assets, foreign bank signing authority, or foreign tax relief under Sections 90, 90A, or 91.
  • Deferred tax on ESOPs from an eligible startup.
  • Deposits above Rs. 1 crore in current accounts during the year.
  • Brought-forward losses, or house property losses you want to carry forward.1Income Tax Department. ITR-1 Sahaj – Indian Income Tax Return

The house-property loss rule trips people up. You can set off up to Rs. 2,00,000 of house property loss against other income within ITR-1, but if any loss remains and you want to carry it forward to future years, you must switch to ITR-2.

Pick Your Tax Regime Before You Start

The new tax regime under Section 115BAC is the default for individuals.3Income Tax Department. FAQs on New Tax vs Old Tax Regime If you do nothing, your return is processed under its slab rates. Resident individuals with taxable income up to Rs. 12,00,000 get a rebate of up to Rs. 60,000 under the new regime, effectively making income up to that threshold tax-free.4Income Tax Department. Salaried Individuals for AY 2026-27 A 4% Health and Education Cess applies on top of the computed tax.

The new regime offers lower rates but strips away most deductions. You cannot claim HRA exemption, Section 80C investments, Section 80D health insurance premiums, or the interest deduction on a home loan for a self-occupied property under the new regime.3Income Tax Department. If your combined Section 80C and 80D claims alone cross Rs. 2 lakh, or you’re paying significant home loan interest and HRA, calculate your liability under both regimes before you commit. Only employer contributions to NPS under Section 80CCD(2), Agniveer Corpus Fund income under Section 80CCH, and Section 80JJAA survive under the new regime.3Income Tax Department. ITR-1 filers can switch between regimes every year directly within the return. Form 10-IEA is only required for taxpayers with business or professional income who want to opt out of or re-enter the new regime, so it does not apply to you.6Income Tax Department. Form 10-IEA – User Manual and FAQs

Gather Your Documents

Having the right paperwork open before you log in prevents most filing mistakes:

  • PAN and Aadhaar, both required to access the portal and link your return.
  • Form 16 from your employer, which breaks down gross salary, exempt allowances, and TDS. For salaried filers, this is the single most important document.
  • Form 26AS, your consolidated tax credit statement showing all TDS and TCS linked to your PAN.
  • Annual Information Statement (AIS), which pulls together financial transactions reported by banks, mutual funds, and other institutions. Reconcile it against Form 26AS before filing.
  • Details of every bank account held during the year, with IFSC codes. You’ll nominate one account for any refund.
  • Investment proofs for PPF, ELSS, insurance premiums, and other old-regime deductions you plan to claim.
  • Your lender’s home loan interest certificate, if you’re reporting house property income.

Defective return notices under Section 139(9) most often come from mismatches between what you report and what the department already sees in Form 26AS and the AIS. Ten minutes of reconciliation up front catches most of them.

File on the e-Filing Portal

ITR-1 is filed entirely online at incometax.gov.in. Log in with your PAN, select the assessment year, choose ITR-1, and pick your tax regime. The portal pre-fills much of the form from your Form 26AS and AIS. Verify every pre-filled figure against your own documents rather than accepting them unchecked.

Enter or confirm your income details, deductions, and tax payments. Run the portal’s built-in validation tool, which flags common errors like mismatched TDS amounts and missing fields. Once validation passes, submit the return. The system generates an acknowledgement called ITR-V confirming the upload.

E-Verify Within 30 Days

Uploading does not complete the filing. You must e-verify within 30 days, and if you miss that window the return is treated as filed on the date you eventually verify, not the date you uploaded. Late-filing consequences then apply even if your upload was on time.7Income Tax Department. FAQs on 30 Days Timeline for E-verification of Returns

The simplest option is an Aadhaar-based OTP sent to your registered mobile number. Other options include net banking, a digital signature certificate, or your bank or demat account linked to the portal. If none of those work, print and sign the ITR-V and mail it to the Centralized Processing Centre in Bengaluru, but it must arrive within the same 30-day window.

Deadlines and Late Filing Consequences

For individuals without audit requirements, the due date for ITR-1 for AY 2026-27 is July 31, 2026.8Income Tax Department. Income Tax Returns Missing it triggers two charges:

  • A late filing fee under Section 234F of Rs. 5,000 if your total income exceeds Rs. 5 lakh, or Rs. 1,000 if it does not.
  • Interest under Section 234A at 1% per month on any unpaid tax from the due date until you file. Any part of a month counts as a full month.

You can still file a belated return until December 31, 2026. A revised return, to correct mistakes in a return you already filed, is allowed until March 31, 2027, or before the assessment is completed, whichever comes first.9Income Tax Department. Income Tax Returns FAQs Filing late also costs you the ability to carry forward certain losses, so the July 31 date matters beyond the fee.

Tracking Your Refund

If your return shows a refund due, log in to the portal and go to e-File, then Income Tax Returns, then View Filed Returns. The page shows the status for each assessment year, including whether your refund has been processed, the amount, and when it was credited.10Income Tax Department.
