How to File Form 7004 Electronically for Free

You can file Form 7004 electronically for free through an IRS-authorized e-file provider, and several approved providers transmit the form at no charge. Form 7004 gives most business returns — including Form 1065 for partnerships, Form 1120-S for S-corporations, and Form 1120 for C-corporations — an automatic six-month extension to file. It does not extend the time to pay. Any tax owed is still due on the original deadline, and interest starts accruing the next day.

Know Your Deadline Before You Start

Form 7004 has to reach the IRS by the original due date of the return you’re extending. Miss that date and the extension is void, no matter how quickly you file afterward.

For calendar-year businesses in 2026:

  • Partnerships (Form 1065) and S-corporations (Form 1120-S) are due March 16, 2026. March 15 falls on a Sunday, so the deadline shifts to Monday.
  • C-corporations (Form 1120) are due April 15, 2026.

A timely Form 7004 pushes those to September 15, 2026 for partnerships and S-corps and October 15, 2026 for C-corps.1Internal Revenue Service. Publication 509 (2026), Tax Calendars Fiscal-year filers use the 15th day of the third month (partnerships and S-corps) or fourth month (C-corps) after their year ends. Estates and trusts filing Form 1041 get five and a half months rather than the full six.2Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 7004

How to Find a Free Authorized E-File Provider

The IRS does not host a portal where you fill out Form 7004 directly. Instead, it processes the form through its Modernized e-File (MeF) system, and you access that system through a third-party software provider the IRS has authorized to transmit business returns.3Internal Revenue Service. Modernized e-File (MeF) Overview The IRS keeps a directory of approved Form 7004 providers on its business e-file page.4Internal Revenue Service. Several of the providers in that directory file Form 7004 for free. The form is short, and these companies typically offer free extension filing as a way to bring you in for paid preparation of the full return later. Before entering your EIN and business details on any site, confirm the provider is legitimate through the IRS Authorized e-File Provider Locator Service, which lists every company approved for the electronic filing program.5Internal Revenue Service. One clarification worth making: the IRS Free File program, which many people know from personal tax season, applies only to individual income tax returns and carries an adjusted gross income cap of $89,000.6Internal Revenue Service. E-File: Do Your Taxes for Free It does not cover Form 7004 or any other business return. Free filing of Form 7004 comes from individual authorized providers, not from Free File.

What You’ll Enter on the Form

Form 7004 runs a single page in two parts. Your e-file provider will walk you through digital fields that mirror the paper form.7Internal Revenue Service. About Form 7004, Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File Certain Business Income Tax, Information, and Other Returns Two categories of information matter most.

The Right Form Code

Part I asks for a three-digit code identifying the return you’re extending. Code 09 covers Form 1065, code 12 covers Form 1120, and code 25 covers Form 1120-S.8Internal Revenue Service. Form 7004 – Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File Certain Business Income Tax, Information, and Other Returns The full code list appears on the form and in the instructions. Enter the wrong code and the extension attaches to the wrong return, or to no return at all.

Entity Information and Estimated Tax

Part II collects the business name exactly as it appears on prior filings, the EIN, and the address. If the name and EIN don’t match IRS records, the extension is rejected.9Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 7004 (Rev. December 2025)

The lower half of Part II is about money. Line 6 is your tentative total tax, line 7 is total payments and refundable credits, and line 8 is the balance due. Partnerships and S-corporations are pass-through entities that generally owe no federal income tax at the entity level, so line 6 is typically zero.2Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 7004 C-corporations have to produce a good-faith estimate using prior-year figures and current-year projections. The estimate matters, and the next section explains why.

Pay What You Owe by the Original Due Date

The extension covers paperwork only. If your C-corporation owes tax, that tax is due on the original filing deadline.2Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 7004 Interest accrues from the day after the original due date on any unpaid balance, even with a valid extension on file. The underpayment interest rate for early 2026 is 7% annually, compounded daily.10Internal Revenue Service. Quarterly Interest Rates

There is one break for corporations. If you pay at least 90% of the final tax shown on the completed return by the original due date and the remaining balance by the extended deadline, no separate late-payment penalty applies.9Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 7004 (Rev. December 2025) Interest still runs on the shortfall, but the penalty is off the table. That 90% rule is why your line 6 estimate has real consequences. Lowballing it costs money.

Most businesses pay through the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS), a free Treasury service. You have to enroll in advance and wait for credentials to arrive, so set up an account well before deadline week if you haven’t used it before. Payments must be scheduled by 8 p.m. Eastern the day before the due date to be received on time.11Electronic Federal Tax Payment System. Welcome to EFTPS Online If you’re not enrolled and time is short, your bank may be able to send a same-day wire to the IRS, usually for a fee.

Confirmation and the Five-Day Fix Window

After you submit through the provider, the IRS typically returns an acceptance or rejection notice within 24 hours. Save the acceptance notice. It is your proof the extension was filed on time if the IRS ever asks.

A rejection notice includes an error code pointing to what went wrong. The most common problems are an EIN that doesn’t match IRS records and an incorrect form code. If the rejection comes on or near the deadline, you have a five-day perfection period to correct the error and resubmit. A corrected filing transmitted within those five calendar days is treated as timely. Full business returns filed through MeF get a ten-day window, but extensions are limited to five. The window exists for genuine typos, not as a planning cushion.

Paper Filing if Electronic Filing Fails

If your provider goes down near the deadline or you can’t get the submission through, Form 7004 can be mailed. The correct service center depends on the return you’re extending and, in some cases, where your principal business is located, so use the IRS’s Where to File page to find the current address.12Internal Revenue Service. Where to File Form 7004 Send it certified mail with return receipt so you have a postmark record.

Why the Few Minutes Are Worth It

Late filing without a valid extension is expensive. Partnerships and S-corporations face a penalty of $255 per partner or shareholder for each month or partial month the return is late, for up to 12 months.13Internal Revenue Service. Failure to File Penalty The penalty is based on the number of owners, not on tax owed, so a pass-through entity with no tax liability can still owe thousands. A ten-partner firm that files four months late without an extension owes $10,200 in this penalty alone.

C-corporations pay a failure-to-file penalty of 5% of unpaid tax per month, capped at 25%. Returns more than 60 days late carry a minimum penalty for 2026 filings equal to the lesser of the tax due or $525.14Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 1120 (2025) On top of that, unpaid tax draws a separate failure-to-pay penalty of 0.5% per month, also capped at 25%, with interest compounding on the whole balance.15Internal Revenue Service. Failure to Pay Penalty The IRS waives penalties for reasonable cause, but running out of time doesn’t qualify. A few minutes filing Form 7004 through a free authorized provider is the cheapest tax compliance move available.
