To amend a federal tax return, file Form 1040-X, the Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, with the IRS to correct a Form 1040, 1040-SR, or 1040-NR you already filed. The form handles changes to income, filing status, deductions, credits, or dependents, and the IRS generally processes it in 8 to 12 weeks, sometimes up to 16.1Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Amended Return? The steps below walk through when to file, what to gather, how to fill out the form, and how to submit it.
First, Check Whether You Actually Need to Amend
File a 1040-X when a change affects your filing status, income, deductions, credits, dependents, or total tax.2Internal Revenue Service. File an Amended Return Common reasons include a corrected W-2 or 1099 that arrived after you filed, a credit like the Earned Income Tax Credit or Child Tax Credit you were entitled to but didn’t claim, a filing status you want to change, or a dependent change from a birth, a custody agreement, or an error.3Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 1040-X
You don’t need to amend for everything. The IRS fixes basic math errors during processing and mails a notice explaining the change. If you forgot to attach a schedule, the IRS will send a letter asking for it rather than making you refile.4Internal Revenue Service. Mistakes Happen: Here’s When to File an Amended Return
One timing rule matters before you start: don’t file the amendment until the original return has finished processing. If a refund is coming from the original, wait for it to arrive.4Internal Revenue Service. Mistakes Happen: Here’s When to File an Amended Return
Know Your Deadline Before You Start
You must file Form 1040-X within three years from the date you filed the original return (or its due date, if you filed early) or within two years from the date you paid the tax, whichever is later.5Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 6511 – Limitations on Credit or Refund Miss that window and the IRS won’t pay a refund, no matter how legitimate the claim.
A few situations extend the clock:
- Bad debts or worthless securities: seven years from the due date of the return for the year the debt or security became worthless.3Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 1040-X
- Foreign tax credit switch (from deduction to credit): ten years from the original return’s due date.3Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 1040-X
- Federally declared disasters or combat zone service: additional time applies.3Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 1040-X
If you owe more tax rather than claiming a refund, there’s no filing deadline. Interest and the failure-to-pay penalty keep running from the original due date, though, so waiting costs money.
Gather Your Documents
Pull out a copy of the return you’re amending. Those figures fill Column A of the 1040-X. If the IRS previously adjusted your return, use the adjusted numbers, not what you originally reported.3Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 1040-X
Then collect whatever supports the change: a corrected W-2, an updated 1099-INT, a late Schedule K-1, a corrected Form 1098 from your mortgage lender. For a missed credit, gather the proof of eligibility. Claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit with a qualifying child means attaching Schedule EIC. Claiming the Child Tax Credit requires that each child have a Social Security number valid for employment issued before the original return’s due date.3Internal Revenue Service. Fill Out the Three Columns
Form 1040-X uses a three-column layout. Column A holds the original figures (or the amounts as previously adjusted by the IRS). Column B shows the net change for each line, as an increase or a decrease. Column C shows the corrected amount.6Internal Revenue Service. Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return The math has to line up across the row, or the IRS will flag it. Rows you aren’t changing still get the original figure in Column A and Column C, with zero in Column B.
Payment lines cause the most avoidable mistakes. On Line 12, enter federal income tax withheld from the original return. On Line 13, enter the estimated tax payments you claimed. Line 16 covers any tax you paid with the original return or afterward. Don’t put interest, penalties, or credit card convenience fees on Line 16.3Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 1040-X Getting these wrong is how people either shortchange their refund or invent a balance due that doesn’t exist.
Part II, Explanation of Changes, is required.6Internal Revenue Service. Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return Be specific. “Received corrected W-2 from employer showing additional $3,200 in wages” tells the processor what to look for. “Correcting income” invites a follow-up letter that adds weeks.

Signatures

Filing Status Changes

You generally cannot amend from a joint return to separate returns after the original due date has passed.9Internal Revenue Service. Multiple Amendments and Multiple Years
You can file more than one 1040-X for the same year as long as each one lands within the deadline. Use a separate form for each tax year you’re correcting.9Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 1040-X
If the Amendment Means You Owe
Interest on an underpayment runs from the original due date of the return, not from the day you file the amendment. The IRS charges the federal short-term rate plus three percentage points, compounded daily.11Internal Revenue Service. Quarterly Interest Rates
The failure-to-pay penalty adds 0.5% of the unpaid tax per month or partial month, up to 25%. An approved payment plan cuts that rate to 0.25% per month.12Internal Revenue Service. Failure to Pay Penalty Filing and paying sooner stops the meter.
Pay through IRS Direct Pay from your bank account (free), by debit or credit card through your IRS Online Account, or by check mailed with the return. If you can’t pay in full, short-term plans run up to 180 days and installment agreements spread the balance over longer periods.13Internal Revenue Service. Tax Payment Options
Track the Return After You File
The IRS “Where’s My Amended Return?” tool at irs.gov shows whether your form has been received, is being processed, or is complete. Status typically appears about three weeks after submission. Processing usually takes 8 to 12 weeks and can stretch to 16 in complex or peak-season cases.1Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Amended Return?
When the IRS finishes, it mails a notice to the last address on file confirming the adjustment and any refund or balance due, or asking for more documentation. Refunds from e-filed amendments can go by direct deposit; paper-filed refunds come as a check.
Don’t Forget the State Return
A federal amendment often changes your state return too. Most states that tax income start from federal adjusted gross income, so a change on your 1040-X can shift what you owe the state. The IRS doesn’t notify your state; that’s on you. Contact your state tax agency for its amended return form and deadline.2Internal Revenue Service. File an Amended Return Don’t attach the state return to the federal 1040-X. They go to different agencies.
