What to Gather Before You Start

That includes 1099-R for pension and retirement distributions, SSA-1099 for Social Security benefits, and 1099-INT or 1099-DIV for interest and dividends.7Internal Revenue Service. The IP PIN is required on every federal return you file during the year, including amended or late returns.8Internal Revenue Service. Confirm Both Senior Deductions Apply
For tax year 2025, most 1040-SR filers take the standard deduction, and there are three pieces to check. The base standard deduction is $15,750 for single filers, $31,500 for married filing jointly, $23,625 for head of household, and $15,750 for married filing separately.9Internal Revenue Service. Publication 501 (2025), Dependents, Standard Deduction, and Filing Information On top of that, taxpayers 65 or older get an additional $2,000 if single or head of household, or $1,600 per qualifying spouse if married.10Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 551 – Standard Deduction
New for 2025: an enhanced deduction worth an additional $6,000 per person age 65 and older, or $12,000 for a joint-filing couple where both spouses qualify.11Internal Revenue Service. Check Your Eligibility for the New Enhanced Deduction for Seniors It applies whether you take the standard deduction or itemize.12Internal Revenue Service. 2026 Filing Season Updates and Resources for Seniors It phases out for modified adjusted gross income above $75,000 (single) or $150,000 (joint), and married filing separately filers aren’t eligible. This enhanced deduction runs through tax year 2028.
Put together, a single filer age 65 under the phase-out threshold could reach a combined deduction of $23,750, and a joint-filing couple where both are 65 could reach $46,700. Software that’s up to date for the 2026 filing season should apply the enhanced deduction automatically once you enter your date of birth, but open the summary before you submit and confirm the $6,000 (or $12,000) actually appears in the deduction total. A missing line here is real money.
Signing and Confirming the Return
Every e-filed return needs an electronic signature. The standard method is the Self-Select PIN: choose any five-digit number other than all zeros, then verify your identity by entering your date of birth and your prior-year adjusted gross income.13Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 255 – Signing Your Return Electronically If you’ve never filed a federal return before and you’re over age 16, enter zero as your prior-year AGI.14Internal Revenue Service. Validating Your Electronically Filed Tax Return Enter your IP PIN if the software prompts you for one.
After you submit, wait for the IRS acceptance message, not just a confirmation from the software company. The IRS sends a separate electronic acknowledgment that your return was officially received and accepted. If the return is rejected, usually for a data mismatch like a wrong Social Security number or an incorrect prior-year AGI, the software tells you what to fix so you can resubmit.
Filing Deadline
The deadline to file your 2025 return is April 15, 2026.15Internal Revenue Service.
