To file your federal taxes online, gather your income documents and Social Security numbers, choose a filing platform based on your income, enter your information through guided software or fillable forms, sign the return electronically using your prior-year adjusted gross income, transmit it to the IRS, and track your refund through the Where’s My Refund tool. For the 2026 filing season, your 2025 return is due April 15, 2026, and most e-filed returns with direct deposit produce a refund in fewer than 21 days.1Internal Revenue Service. When to File2Internal Revenue Service. Why It May Take Longer Than 21 Days for Some Taxpayers to Receive Their Federal Refund
Gather Your Documents First
Pull everything together before you open any software. Hunting for a missing form mid-return is how mistakes get made.
Start with identifiers. You need Social Security numbers or ITINs for yourself, your spouse if filing jointly, and every dependent you plan to claim.3Internal Revenue Service. Dependents A typo in any one of these is among the most common reasons the IRS rejects an e-filed return. If you or a dependent lacks a Social Security number, you can apply for an ITIN using Form W-7, which requires your original tax return along with identity documents such as a valid passport.4Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form W-7
Income Documents
Employers must send you a W-2 by January 31, and the same deadline applies to 1099-NEC forms for contractor income and 1099-INT forms for bank interest.5Internal Revenue Service. Form W-2 and Other Wage Statements Deadline Coming Up for Employers If you have brokerage accounts, expect 1099-DIV and 1099-B forms. The IRS receives copies of all of these, so the numbers you enter on your return need to match what your payers reported.
Deduction and Credit Records
If you paid $600 or more in mortgage interest, your lender sends Form 1098 automatically.6Internal Revenue Service. About Form 1098, Mortgage Interest Statement For the Child and Dependent Care Credit, you’ll need your provider’s Tax Identification Number and total amount paid. The software calculates eligibility for credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit based on the income figures you enter, so accuracy at the income step is what makes those credits work.7Internal Revenue Service. Banking Details and an Optional PIN
For direct deposit — the fastest way to get a refund — have your bank routing and account numbers ready. You can find both on a personal check, in your banking app, or on your bank’s website. The IRS can deposit into checking accounts, savings accounts, and some prepaid debit cards that carry a routing and account number.8Internal Revenue Service. Get Your Refund Faster: Tell IRS to Direct Deposit Your Refund to One, Two, or Three Accounts Verify those numbers carefully. The IRS cannot update your banking information after your return is filed.9Internal Revenue Service. Direct Deposit Is the Best Way to Get a Federal Tax Refund
Consider requesting an Identity Protection PIN through your IRS Online Account. This six-digit number blocks anyone else from filing a fraudulent return using your Social Security number. Anyone with an SSN or ITIN can enroll, and the fastest way is the Profile tab in your IRS Online Account.10Internal Revenue Service. Frequently Asked Questions About the Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN) Taxpayers with adjusted gross income below $84,000 (or $168,000 for joint filers) can apply by submitting Form 15227 instead.
Choose a Filing Platform
Three main paths lead to an e-filed federal return: IRS Free File guided software, Free File Fillable Forms, and commercial tax software. Income and comfort with tax forms decide which fits.
IRS Free File
If your adjusted gross income for 2025 was $89,000 or less, you qualify for IRS Free File, which gives you access to brand-name tax software at no cost for your federal return.11Internal Revenue Service. File Your Taxes for Free The IRS partners with several providers, and each one sets its own additional eligibility rules based on factors like age and state of residence. These platforms guide you with plain-language questions and fill in the correct forms based on your answers.12Internal Revenue Service. 2026 Tax Filing Season Opens With Several Free Filing Options Available The federal return is free; state returns may cost extra depending on the provider.
Free File Fillable Forms
If your income exceeds $89,000 or you prefer to do the math yourself, Free File Fillable Forms lets you complete IRS forms directly in your browser and e-file free of charge. There is no income cap.13Internal Revenue Service. Free File Fillable Forms You get the forms and basic calculations, but no guided interview and limited error checking. This works best if you’ve filed before and know which forms and schedules you need.
Commercial Tax Software
Paid platforms like TurboTax, H&R Block, and TaxAct offer guided interviews, automatic import of W-2 and 1099 data from many employers and banks, audit risk analysis, and support for situations like rental income or stock sales. Prices vary with the complexity of your return, and most handle state returns for an additional fee.
One option is not available this season: IRS Direct File, the government-built free filing tool offered in 25 states during the previous year, will not continue for 2026. The IRS notified participating states of that decision.
Sign and Transmit the Return
Once your information is entered and reviewed, sign the return electronically before you send it. The IRS validates your identity using your prior-year adjusted gross income, which sits on line 11 of your 2024 Form 1040.14Internal Revenue Service. Validating Your Electronically Filed Tax Return Don’t have last year’s return handy? You can use a Self-Select PIN created during a prior filing year.15Internal Revenue Service. Self-Select PIN Method for Forms 1040 and 4868 Modernized e-File If you obtained an Identity Protection PIN, enter that as well. Your electronic signature carries the same legal weight as signing a paper return.
After you sign, click transmit. Your software immediately generates a confirmation with the exact timestamp, which serves as your proof of filing. That initial confirmation means your data was sent, not that the IRS has accepted the return. Acceptance or rejection typically comes within 24 to 48 hours.
Pay Any Balance Due
If your return shows tax owed, several payment options are available while you file. Electronic Funds Withdrawal pulls the payment directly from your bank account on a date you choose, and the IRS charges no fee for this method.16Internal Revenue Service. Pay Taxes by Electronic Funds Withdrawal Credit and debit card payments run through third-party processors that charge a convenience fee. Credit card fees run around 1.75% to 1.85% of your payment depending on the processor, while personal debit card payments carry a flat fee of roughly $2.10 to $2.15.17Internal Revenue Service. Pay Your Taxes by Debit or Credit Card or Digital Wallet None of that fee goes to the IRS.
If you can’t pay in full, file on time anyway and set up a payment plan online. A short-term plan gives you up to 180 days to pay with no setup fee. For longer-term installment agreements, the online setup fee is $22 for direct debit or $69 for other payment methods, and low-income taxpayers may qualify for fee waivers or reimbursement.18Internal Revenue Service. Payment Plans; Installment Agreements Once you’re on an approved plan, the monthly failure-to-pay penalty drops from 0.5% to 0.25%.19Internal Revenue Service. Failure to Pay Penalty
Track Your Refund
Once the IRS accepts your return, check the status through Where’s My Refund on IRS.gov or the IRS2Go mobile app, available for iOS and Android.20Internal Revenue Service. IRS2GoApp You’ll need three items: your Social Security number or ITIN, your filing status, and the exact whole-dollar amount of your expected refund.21Internal Revenue Service. Refunds The status is available within 24 hours of acceptance.
The tracker moves through three stages: Return Received, Refund Approved, and Refund Sent. Most e-filed returns with direct deposit produce a refund in fewer than 21 days.2Internal Revenue Service. Why It May Take Longer Than 21 Days for Some Taxpayers to Receive Their Federal Refund One exception: federal law prevents the IRS from issuing refunds tied to the Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit before mid-February. For 2026, the IRS expects most EITC and ACTC refunds to reach bank accounts by March 2, 2026, for taxpayers who filed early with direct deposit.22Internal Revenue Service. IRS Opens 2026 Filing Season
If the tracker hasn’t updated and more than 21 days have passed since acceptance, call the IRS refund hotline at 800-829-1954 or reach a representative at 800-829-1040.21Internal Revenue Service. Refunds
If the IRS Rejects Your Return
A rejection is not an audit. It means the IRS system couldn’t process your submission, usually because of a data mismatch. Common causes include a mistyped Social Security number, a name that doesn’t match SSA records, or a dependent’s SSN already claimed on another return. The rejection notice describes the error.23Internal Revenue Service. Age Name SSN Rejects, Errors, Correction Procedures
For simple typos, fix the mistake in your software and retransmit. You have five calendar days after the filing deadline to correct and resubmit a rejected Form 1040, and the IRS will still treat it as timely filed. If the problem can’t be resolved electronically, such as when someone else fraudulently filed using your SSN, you’ll need to print and mail a paper return. Write “Rejected Electronic Return” in red at the top of the first page, attach a copy of the rejection notice, and mail it by the later of the original deadline or 10 calendar days after the rejection.23Internal Revenue Service. Age Name SSN Rejects, Errors, Correction Procedures If the rejection suggests someone else already filed using your identity, call 800-829-1040.
Amending a Return After Filing
Forgot a 1099 or picked the wrong filing status? Correct a previously filed return by submitting Form 1040-X. The IRS now lets you e-file amendments for the current tax year and the two prior years. If your original return was filed on paper, the amendment must also be filed on paper.24Internal Revenue Service. Amended Returns
If your amendment results in a refund, you generally have three years from the date you filed the original return, or two years from when you paid the tax, whichever is later.25Internal Revenue Service. Statute of Limitations Processes and Procedures Amendments take longer than original returns — often 16 weeks or more. Track the status with the Where’s My Amended Return tool on IRS.gov, which becomes available about three weeks after you submit.21Internal Revenue Service. Refunds
State Returns Are Separate
Federal filing is only half the job for most people. Forty-two states impose their own individual income tax and require a separate return. Only Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, and Wyoming have no state income tax. If you lived or earned income in a state that does tax income, you’ll need a state return in addition to your federal one.
Some IRS Free File partners include a free state return with the federal offering, and many charge extra. Commercial software typically bills separately for state filing as well. If your state runs its own free e-filing portal on its department of revenue website, that route can save the added cost. Check your state’s tax agency site to confirm the deadline, since not every state follows the April 15 federal date.
