To file for a tax extension, submit IRS Form 4868 by April 15 — either electronically through tax software or IRS Free File, by mailing a paper form, or by making a tax payment online and selecting “extension” as the reason. The IRS grants the extension automatically, with no explanation or approval needed, and your filing deadline moves to October 15. One thing to understand before you do anything else: the extension gives you more time to file the paperwork, not more time to pay. Any tax you owe is still due April 15, and interest starts accruing the next day.1Internal Revenue Service. Get an Extension to File Your Tax Return
For the 2025 tax year, the deadline to request an extension is April 15, 2026, and the extended filing deadline is October 15, 2026.2Internal Revenue Service. When to File
File vs. Pay: The Distinction That Trips People Up
An extension of time to file is not an extension of time to pay.3Internal Revenue Service. Types of Payments Available to Individuals Through Direct Pay Your return can wait until October, but your tax bill cannot. If you owe money and pay nothing by April 15, penalties and interest begin the next day, even though your return isn’t due yet.
If you’re expecting a refund, none of this matters. The late-filing and late-payment penalties are both calculated on unpaid tax after subtracting withholding, estimated payments, and refundable credits.4Internal Revenue Service. Failure to File Penalty When that number is zero, so is the penalty. You’ll still want to file eventually to claim the refund, but no clock is running against you.
If you owe, the goal on April 15 is to pay as close to your actual liability as you can, then file the extension for the paperwork.
Three Ways to Submit the Extension
The IRS accepts extension requests through any of the following. Pick whichever fits your situation.
Pay Online and Skip the Form
The fastest option if you owe money. Make a payment through IRS Direct Pay, the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System, or a credit or debit card, and select “extension” as the reason for payment. The IRS grants the extension automatically, and no separate Form 4868 is required.5Internal Revenue Service. E-File Form 4868
Most commercial tax software will file Form 4868 for you electronically. If your adjusted gross income is $89,000 or less, you can file the extension through IRS Free File at no cost.7Internal Revenue Service. 2026 Tax Filing Season Opens With Several Free Filing Options Available You’ll receive electronic confirmation that the IRS received the request.
Mail a Paper Form 4868
You can print Form 4868 and send it by U.S. mail. The correct address depends on your state and whether you’re enclosing a payment; the form’s instructions list the right one for your situation.8Internal Revenue Service. Private delivery services can’t reach IRS P.O. box addresses, so use USPS for paper extensions.
What You Need to Fill Out Form 4868
The form is short. Before you start, gather:
- Your Social Security Number or ITIN. If you recently changed your name, update Social Security records first — a mismatch delays processing.8Internal Revenue Service. Form 4868 – Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return
- An estimate of your total tax liability for the year. Use your W-2s, 1099s, and last year’s return to build the number. The IRS warns that unreasonable estimates can void the extension.8Internal Revenue Service. Form 4868 – Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return
- Your total payments already made: federal withholding from paychecks, quarterly estimated tax payments, and refundable credits you expect to claim.8Internal Revenue Service. Form 4868 – Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return
Subtract payments from estimated liability. That’s your balance due — the amount to pay by April 15 to avoid interest and penalties. If the result is negative, you’re getting a refund and can send the extension in with no payment.
What It Costs If You Don’t Pay by April 15
Three separate charges can stack on unpaid tax.
The failure-to-pay penalty is 0.5% of the unpaid tax per month or partial month it stays outstanding, capped at 25%. If you have an approved installment agreement and filed on time, the rate drops to 0.25% per month.10Internal Revenue Service. Failure to Pay Penalty
The failure-to-file penalty is much steeper: 5% of the unpaid tax per month, also capped at 25%.4Internal Revenue Service. Failure to File Penalty This is the one filing an extension protects you from — as long as you file the return by October 15. If your return ends up more than 60 days late, a minimum penalty applies: $525 or 100% of the unpaid tax, whichever is less. When both penalties apply in the same month, the failure-to-file penalty is reduced by the failure-to-pay amount.10Internal Revenue Service. Failure to Pay Penalty
Interest runs on any unpaid balance from the original April 15 due date until you pay in full. The underpayment rate is set quarterly; for the second quarter of 2026, it’s 6%.11Internal Revenue Service. Internal Revenue Bulletin: 2026-08 Interest also accrues on the penalties themselves.12Internal Revenue Service. Interest
Even if you can’t pay everything, pay as much as you can by April 15 to reduce what all three charges are calculated against.
If You Can’t Pay in Full
File the extension anyway. Owing money is expensive; not filing is much more expensive. The IRS also offers structured payment options that soften the cost:
- A short-term payment plan gives you up to 180 additional days to pay, available if you owe less than $100,000 in combined tax, penalties, and interest. Set it up through the IRS Online Payment Agreement tool.13Internal Revenue Service. IRS Payment Plan Options – Fast, Easy and Secure
- A long-term installment agreement lets you pay in monthly installments over up to 72 months, available for balances under $50,000. Balances between $25,000 and $50,000 require direct debit from your bank account.13Internal Revenue Service. IRS Payment Plan Options – Fast, Easy and Secure
An approved installment agreement cuts the failure-to-pay penalty rate in half while it’s active.10Internal Revenue Service. Failure to Pay Penalty Interest keeps running either way.
First-Time Penalty Abatement
If you’ve filed on time and stayed penalty-free for the previous three tax years, you can request first-time penalty abatement, which removes the failure-to-file or failure-to-pay penalty entirely for a single year.14Internal Revenue Service. Administrative Penalty Relief It’s an administrative waiver based on compliance history, not hardship, and the IRS doesn’t apply it automatically. If you qualify, you have to ask. If you don’t qualify, you can still request penalty relief for reasonable cause — serious illness, a death in the family, a natural disaster, or inability to obtain records — which the IRS reviews case by case with documentation.15Internal Revenue Service. When You Don’t Need to File Form 4868 at All
Some taxpayers get automatic extensions without submitting anything.
Living abroad. If your main home and place of work are outside the United States and Puerto Rico on April 15, you get an automatic two-month extension to June 15 with no form required. Attach a statement to your eventual return explaining that you qualified.16Internal Revenue Service. U.S. Citizens and Resident Aliens Abroad – Automatic 2-Month Extension of Time to File Interest still runs on any unpaid tax from April 15. You can still file Form 4868 on top of this to reach the October 15 deadline.
Combat zone service. Service members deployed in a combat zone have their filing deadlines suspended for the entire time in the zone plus 180 days afterward. The extension also covers support personnel like Red Cross workers and certain civilians under military direction, and generally covers spouses of deployed service members.17Internal Revenue Service. Extension of Deadlines — Combat Zone Service
Federally declared disaster areas. When the IRS grants disaster relief, filing and payment deadlines are automatically postponed for affected taxpayers, without any request needed.18Internal Revenue Service. IRS Announces Tax Relief for Taxpayers Impacted by Severe Winter Storms in the State of Louisiana; Various Deadlines Postponed to March 31, 2026 If you’re affected but live outside the official area, call the IRS disaster hotline at 866-562-5227 to request it.
Your State Return Is Separate
A federal extension does not automatically extend your state return. State rules vary: some states grant an automatic extension with no filing, some accept a copy of your federal Form 4868, and others require their own separate extension form. Check your state revenue department’s website before assuming you’re covered. And the file-versus-pay rule applies at the state level too — most states expect payment of any state tax owed by the original due date, with their own penalties on late balances.
Businesses Use a Different Form
Form 4868 is for individuals. Partnerships, corporations, estates, and trusts file Form 7004 instead.19Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 7004 Sole proprietors who report business income on Schedule C of their personal return still use Form 4868 like any other individual filer.
After the Extension: October 15 Is Firm
