How to File an Amended Tax Return With H&R Block

To file an amended tax return with H&R Block, open your original return in the H&R Block software or online account you used to file it, choose the amended return option to generate Form 1040-X, enter your corrections along with a short written explanation, and either e-file or mail the result to the IRS. If you did not originally file with H&R Block, or if the changes are complicated, an H&R Block tax professional can prepare the 1040-X for you in an office or through a virtual appointment.

When You Actually Need to Amend

File Form 1040-X when something substantive changes the bottom line of your return: a late 1099 you missed, the wrong filing status, a deduction or credit you claimed incorrectly or forgot, or a corrected W-2c or Schedule K-1 that reached you after you filed. You can also use the form to make certain elections after the original deadline or to respond to IRS adjustments on a prior return.1Internal Revenue Service. About Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return

You do not need to amend for simple math errors or forgotten attachments. The IRS catches arithmetic mistakes during processing and will send a notice; if a W-2 or schedule is missing, the IRS typically requests it rather than rejecting the return.2Internal Revenue Service. If You Must Amend Your Return

Before you start, pull together a copy of the original return and any corrected documents that justify the changes.

The Deadline for a Refund

If the amendment will produce a refund, the clock is strict. You must file Form 1040-X within three years from the date you filed the original return or within two years from the date you paid the tax, whichever is later.3Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 6511 – Limitations on Credit or Refund If you filed before the April 15 due date, the three-year window runs from April 15, not from your actual filing date.4Internal Revenue Service. Time You Can Claim a Credit or Refund

If the amendment will show additional tax owed rather than a refund, there is no filing bar, but interest and penalties have been running since the original due date. The sooner you file, the less you pay in extras.

Doing It Yourself in H&R Block Software

If you filed the original return through H&R Block’s desktop or online product, you can prepare the amendment inside the same product. Open the completed tax file for the year you need to correct and look for the amendment option, usually labeled something like “Amended Return (Form 1040X).”

Turning on the amendment feature freezes your original figures in Column A of Form 1040-X. You then edit the relevant parts of the return with the correct information, and the software fills Column C with the new numbers and Column B with the difference, which tells you whether you are owed a refund or owe more.

The software will prompt you to write an explanation of why you are amending. That text goes in Part II of Form 1040-X and is mandatory; skip it and the IRS may delay processing.5Internal Revenue Service. Form 1040-X (Rev. December 2025) Keep it short and factual. Something like “Received corrected 1099-NEC after filing; adding $4,200 in previously unreported income” is the right tone.

If you used H&R Block’s free online tier for the original return, you may need to upgrade to a paid product to unlock the amendment feature. The software supports e-filing of Form 1040-X when the IRS allows it for the tax year in question, so check that before you print and mail.

Using an H&R Block Tax Professional

If the changes are complicated, or your original return was prepared somewhere else, an H&R Block office is a workable route. You can drop off the original return and your corrected documents in person or share them through a virtual appointment, and the preparer handles the 1040-X, including the Part II explanation.

Fees vary by location and by how much work the amendment takes. Expect the cost to climb if more than one schedule changes, or if the preparer has to rebuild your original return in their system because it was filed elsewhere. H&R Block does not publish one flat rate for amendments, so ask for a quote before you authorize the work.

You may pay nothing in one specific situation: if an H&R Block preparer made the error, or an H&R Block software flaw caused it, the company’s accuracy guarantees generally cover the fix. The Peace of Mind extended service plan, if you bought it with the original return, may cover certain amendment costs as well. If the mistake came from information you failed to provide or provided incorrectly, standard fees apply.

E-File or Mail

The IRS now accepts e-filed Form 1040-X for the current tax year and the two prior tax years.1Internal Revenue Service. About Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return You can e-file up to three amended returns per tax year; after the third accepted filing, further electronic submissions for that year will be rejected.6Internal Revenue Service. Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return: Frequently Asked Questions If your amendment falls outside those windows, or you have already used your three, you file on paper.

E-filing offers one real advantage beyond speed. If an amended return for tax year 2021 or later produces a refund, you can receive it by direct deposit when you e-file. Paper-filed amendments always produce a paper check.7Internal Revenue Service. File an Amended Return

If you mail, print the two-page Form 1040-X together with copies of any schedules or forms that changed, and attach everything that supports the changes. Missing attachments are one of the most common causes of delay. The IRS mailing address depends on where you live and is listed on the IRS site.8Internal Revenue Service. If You Owe More Tax

When the amendment shows you owe additional tax, pay as fast as you can. Interest on the underpayment has been running since the original April due date. For the first quarter of 2026, the IRS interest rate on individual underpayments is 7% per year, compounded daily.9Internal Revenue Service. Interest Rates Remain the Same for the First Quarter of 2026

A failure-to-pay penalty of 0.5% of the unpaid tax applies for each month or partial month the balance remains outstanding, up to a maximum of 25%.10Internal Revenue Service. Failure to Pay Penalty A separate accuracy-related penalty of 20% of the underpayment can apply when the original error was due to negligence or a substantial understatement of income. For individuals, substantial understatement means tax was understated by 10% of the correct liability or $5,000, whichever is greater.11Internal Revenue Service. Accuracy-Related Penalty

Do not try to compute interest or penalties yourself and build them into the amended return. The IRS calculates those separately and sends a bill. Just pay the additional tax when you file.7Internal Revenue Service. File an Amended Return You can mail a check or money order with Form 1040-V attached to a paper return, or pay electronically through IRS Direct Pay, which accepts payments designated for amended returns and covers the current year plus up to 20 prior years.12Internal Revenue Service. The State Return You Probably Also Need to Amend

A federal amendment usually changes your state tax too, because most states start from federal adjusted gross income or federal taxable income. If any number flowing from the 1040-X affects your state return, plan on filing a state amendment as well. Some states set their own deadline, often 90 days after the federal amendment is filed, so check your state’s rules promptly.

If H&R Block prepared your original state return, the software can usually generate the state amended form alongside Form 1040-X. In an office, the preparer can handle both at once, though the state amendment may carry its own fee.

Checking the Status

Amended returns take much longer than original ones. The IRS says to allow 8 to 12 weeks, and processing can run up to 16 weeks.6Internal Revenue Service.
