To file a federal tax extension, submit IRS Form 4868 by April 15 and you get six extra months, until October 15, to send in your return. You can file it electronically through IRS Free File, on paper by mail, or skip the form entirely by making a tax payment online and marking it as an extension. The extension only buys you time to file the paperwork. Any tax you owe is still due April 15, and interest and a monthly penalty start running on unpaid balances the day after.

What Form 4868 Asks For
Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, runs one page with six lines.3Internal Revenue Service. About Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return You’ll need:
- Your name and address, matching what the IRS has from your previous return.
- Your Social Security Number or ITIN, required under Internal Revenue Code Section 6109. Joint filers include both spouses’ numbers.4Internal Revenue Service. Form 4868 Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return
- Your estimated total tax liability for the year on Line 4, before subtracting withholding and estimated payments.
- Total payments already made on Line 5, including employer withholding, quarterly estimated payments, and credits.

Line 4 is where people slip up. Start from last year’s return, then adjust for this year’s wage statements, 1099s, and any changes in income. The form itself warns that “if we later find that the estimate wasn’t reasonable, the extension will be null and void.”4Internal Revenue Service. Three Ways to Submit It
IRS Free File
The fastest route for most people. IRS Free File lets you submit Form 4868 electronically through a participating software provider, and there is no income limit for extension requests.7Internal Revenue Service. Get an Extension to File Your Tax Return The software walks you through the same six fields, and you get an electronic confirmation when the IRS receives your request.
Pay Online and Skip the Form
If you owe tax, you can request the extension and pay in a single step. Make a payment through IRS Direct Pay or the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS) and select “extension” as the reason for payment.8Internal Revenue Service. Types of Payments Available to Individuals Through Direct Pay The transaction counts as both a payment and an extension request, and you’ll get a confirmation number for your records.9Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 304, Extensions of Time to File Your Tax Return No Form 4868 required.
Print Form 4868, fill it out, and send it to the IRS processing center for your state. The correct address depends on where you live and whether you’re enclosing a payment; the Form 4868 instructions include a table matching every state to its processing center.10Internal Revenue Service. Where to File Addresses for Businesses and Tax Professionals Filing Form 4868 Use certified mail with return receipt requested. Your postmark date is your filing date, so the receipt proves you met the deadline if anything is disputed later.
After You File
The IRS automatically approves extension requests that meet the basic requirements. No approval letter goes out. The absence of a rejection is itself the confirmation.7Internal Revenue Service. Get an Extension to File Your Tax Return Your new filing deadline becomes October 15, moving to the next business day if that date lands on a weekend or holiday.11Internal Revenue Service. To verify the extension was recorded, sign in to your IRS Individual Online Account. Your tax account transcript reflects filing status changes and payment types.12Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Types for Individuals and Ways to Order Them If you filed electronically, you should also have a confirmation number from the software or payment portal. Keep both with your return.
October 15 is a hard deadline. The IRS does not grant a second extension for individual returns. Miss it, and the failure-to-file penalty accrues as though you never requested the extension in the first place.
If You Can’t Pay by April 15
The extension covers filing, not paying. The IRS expects you to pay your estimated tax liability by April 15 no matter what.7Internal Revenue Service. Get an Extension to File Your Tax Return Interest runs on any unpaid balance at 7% per year, compounded daily, for the first quarter of 2026.13Internal Revenue Service. Interest Rates Remain the Same for the First Quarter of 2026 The failure-to-pay penalty adds 0.5% of the unpaid tax per month.14Internal Revenue Service. Failure to Pay Penalty
Even so, filing the extension is almost always worth it. The failure-to-pay penalty at 0.5% per month is a fraction of the 5% monthly failure-to-file penalty you’d face without one. Pay as much as you can by April 15 to shrink the balance those charges apply to. If you’ll need time to pay off the rest, apply for an installment agreement through your online account or by submitting Form 9465.15Internal Revenue Service. Payment Plans; Installment Agreements A payment plan doesn’t stop interest, but it prevents the IRS from escalating to collection actions while you’re making payments.
Situations That Grant Extra Time Without Form 4868
Living or Working Abroad
U.S. citizens and resident aliens whose main home or workplace is outside the United States and Puerto Rico on April 15 automatically get a two-month extension to June 15, without filing Form 4868.16Internal Revenue Service. U.S. Citizens and Resident Aliens Abroad – Automatic 2-Month Extension of Time to File The same applies to military members stationed outside the U.S. Attach a statement to your return explaining which qualifying situation applies. You can still file Form 4868 by June 15 to push the deadline all the way to October 15. Note that interest on any unpaid tax runs from April 15, not June 15.
Federally Declared Disaster Areas
When the IRS grants disaster relief, filing and payment deadlines are postponed automatically for taxpayers in the affected zip codes. Nothing needs to be filed or requested.17Internal Revenue Service. IRS Announces Tax Relief for Taxpayers Impacted by Severe Winter Storms in the State of Louisiana If your records are in a disaster area but you live elsewhere, call the IRS disaster hotline at 866-562-5227 to request relief. The specific new dates vary by disaster declaration.
Combat Zone Service
Military members serving in a designated combat zone get the most generous extension available. The deadline for filing and paying stretches for the full length of service in the zone plus 180 days after leaving.18Internal Revenue Service. Extension of Deadlines – Combat Zone Service Service members who entered the combat zone before April 15 also get credit for the days remaining before that deadline. No interest or penalties accrue during the extension period, and the extension applies to spouses too, whether filing jointly or separately.
A Few Things Form 4868 Does Not Cover
A federal extension does not extend your state return. State rules vary widely. Some states accept the federal Form 4868 in place of a state form, some grant an automatic state extension when you have a valid federal one, and others require a separate state extension. Most states follow the federal pattern of extending only the filing deadline while still requiring estimated tax payment by the original due date. Check your state tax agency before assuming you’re covered.
If you expect a refund, no failure-to-file penalty applies because there’s no unpaid tax for it to attach to. You still have a limit: three years from the original filing deadline to submit the return and claim the refund, after which the money goes to the U.S. Treasury.19Internal Revenue Service. Time You Can Claim a Credit or Refund For the 2025 tax year, that puts the refund deadline at April 15, 2029.
