There are two reliable ways to expedite a VA disability claim: request priority processing by filing VA Form 20-10207 if you fall into a qualifying category, or file a Fully Developed Claim with every piece of evidence attached the day you submit. As of February 2026, the VA reports an average processing time of about 77 days for disability-related claims, and priority-eligible veterans facing hardship or serious illness can often get a decision faster.1Veterans Affairs. The VA Claim Process After You File Your Claim Which route fits depends on your situation, and both reward preparation before you file.
Who Qualifies for Priority Processing
The VA will move your claim ahead of the standard queue if at least one of the following applies to you:2Veterans Affairs. Request Priority Processing for an Existing Claim
- You are homeless or facing loss of housing within 14 days with no identified alternative residence.
- You are experiencing extreme financial hardship, such as a sudden job loss, sharp income drop, pending eviction or foreclosure, or an inability to cover basic expenses.
- You have a confirmed diagnosis of ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease).
- You have a terminal illness, meaning a condition that cannot be treated and is expected to result in death.
- You have Very Seriously Injured or Ill (VSI) or Seriously Injured or Ill (SI) status from the Defense Department.
- You are age 85 or older.
- You are a former prisoner of war.
- You are a Medal of Honor or Purple Heart recipient.
The financial hardship category is broader than many veterans assume. You do not need to be facing eviction specifically. A sudden income drop or mounting collection notices can qualify. The terminal illness category covers any untreatable condition expected to result in death, not only the most commonly cited diagnoses. If you are unsure whether your situation qualifies, file the request anyway. Your claim continues processing normally if the VA determines you do not meet the criteria.
Evidence to Attach to Your Priority Request
A priority request is only as strong as the documentation behind it. The VA needs enough proof to confirm your qualifying situation before it will move your claim forward.
Financial Hardship
Submit concrete proof. The VA accepts eviction or foreclosure notices, past-due utility bills, and collection notices from creditors.2Veterans Affairs. Request Priority Processing for an Existing Claim Bank statements showing you cannot cover basic expenses also work. If credit card debt has gone to collections, that collection notice qualifies. A general statement that money is tight, without paperwork, does not.
Medical Conditions
For ALS or a terminal illness, you need medical evidence of the diagnosis. A signed statement from your treating physician describing the nature and expected course of the condition is the most direct route. If your treatment records sit with a private provider, submit VA Forms 21-4142 and 21-4142a, which authorize the VA to request those records for you.2Veterans Affairs. Other Qualifying Categories
Former POWs, Medal of Honor or Purple Heart recipients, veterans aged 85 or older, and those with VSI or SI status usually have their qualifying status documented in military or VA records already. Note which category applies on VA Form 20-10207. The VA can verify these designations internally, so the documentation burden is lighter.
Filing a Fully Developed Claim
If you do not qualify for priority processing, the Fully Developed Claim program is the next best way to cut wait time. You submit every piece of evidence the VA needs on the same day you file, and in exchange the VA processes it faster than a standard claim where the agency has to chase down records.3Veterans Affairs. Fully Developed Claims Program
You file VA Form 21-526EZ and include:
- Private medical records: reports from your own doctors, X-rays, lab results, and records from any non-VA hospital or treatment center related to your claimed condition.
- Military treatment records: any service medical records or military personnel records connected to the disability.
- Statements from family, friends, fellow service members, or clergy describing your condition, how it developed, and how it affects you. These are sometimes called buddy statements.
- Names and locations of any VA medical centers where you received treatment, so the VA can pull those electronic records quickly.
You also certify that you have no more evidence to submit. That certification is what makes the claim “fully developed.” It tells the adjudicator the file is complete and ready for a decision.
Here is the trap. If you submit additional evidence after filing your FDC, the VA removes it from the program and processes it as a standard claim.3Veterans Affairs. Fully Developed Claims Program The speed advantage disappears. Do not file as an FDC unless you are genuinely finished gathering records. If you are still waiting on a doctor’s report or tracking down old treatment files, use an Intent to File instead.
Using an Intent to File to Protect Your Effective Date
An Intent to File is one of the most underused tools in the claims process. By submitting VA Form 21-0966, you lock in a potential effective date for your benefits before your full claim is ready. If the VA later approves your claim, you may receive retroactive payments covering the period between the intent and the approval.4Veterans Affairs. Submit an Intent to File
You have one year from the date the VA processes your Intent to File to submit the actual claim. If that year passes without a completed application, the potential effective date expires and you lose the retroactive window.4Veterans Affairs. Submit an Intent to File File the intent first, then use the year to build the strongest possible FDC.
How to Submit the Forms
Online Through VA.gov
The fastest submission method is the VA.gov portal. Sign in with an identity-verified account and file VA Form 21-526EZ electronically. VA Form 20-10207 for priority processing can also be completed and submitted through the portal.2Veterans Affairs. Request Priority Processing for an Existing Claim Save the confirmation page.
QuickSubmit for Additional Documents
For uploading supporting documents separately from the initial application, the VA’s QuickSubmit tool has replaced the older Direct Upload system. QuickSubmit allows files up to 200 MB each and up to 30 documents per submission. It transfers documents automatically to the VA’s Evidence Intake Center.5VA News. By Mail
If you cannot use digital tools, mail your completed forms and evidence to:6Veterans Affairs. How to File a VA Disability Claim

Claims Intake Center
PO Box 4444
Janesville, WI 53547-4444
Make sure every page is clearly legible. The intake center scans paper mail into the electronic system, and blurry or faded documents can cause delays or lost information. If you are submitting a priority processing request by mail, put VA Form 20-10207 on top of the package so it is the first thing scanned.
Avoiding Delays After You File
During the review, the VA may schedule a Compensation and Pension exam to evaluate how severe your disability is. Results directly affect your disability rating and the amount of compensation you receive.7Veterans Affairs. VA Claim Exam (C&P Exam) Do not miss or reschedule this appointment unless absolutely necessary. A missed C&P exam is one of the fastest ways to stall an otherwise expedited claim, and in some cases the VA will decide based on whatever evidence is already in the file.
Check status any time by signing into VA.gov and using the claim status tool. It shows where your claim sits in the review and whether the VA needs anything from you.8Veterans Affairs. Check Your VA Claim, Decision Review, or Appeal Status Responding quickly to any request for additional information keeps the clock moving.
Getting Help From an Accredited Representative
A Veterans Service Organization representative or other VA-accredited representative can file your priority processing request, help gather evidence, and track your claim. To appoint one, submit VA Form 21-22, which authorizes them to access your claim information and act on your behalf.2Veterans Affairs. Request Priority Processing for an Existing Claim
This is worth doing if you are dealing with financial hardship or a serious medical condition and assembling documentation feels overwhelming. An experienced representative knows what evidence the VA needs for each priority category and can spot gaps in your file before submission. They can also make sure your FDC is genuinely complete so it does not get kicked back to the standard queue. The VFW, DAV, and American Legion provide these services at no charge.
