How to Earn Army Promotion Points: Categories, Caps, and Cutoffs

To earn Army promotion points toward Sergeant or Staff Sergeant, you accumulate credit across five capped categories — military education, civilian education, awards and decorations, the Army Combat Fitness Test, and weapons qualification — up to a maximum of 800 points total.1Headquarters Department of the Army. Army Regulation 600-8-19 Enlisted Promotions and Demotions Each month, Human Resources Command publishes a cutoff score for every Military Occupational Specialty; if your total meets or beats it, you promote. The system rewards Soldiers who build points in every category rather than maxing out one.

Military Education Points

Military education carries the largest maximum of any category: 240 points for SGT and 245 for SSG.1Headquarters Department of the Army. Army Regulation 600-8-19 Enlisted Promotions and Demotions There are four ways to build points here.

PME Honors

Passing the Basic Leader Course or Advanced Leader Course alone doesn’t earn points in this subcategory, but doing well does. Commandant’s List graduation earns 20 points. Distinguished Honor Graduate or Distinguished Leadership Graduate earns 40. Values apply equally for SGT and SSG.1Headquarters Department of the Army. Resident Training

Courses listed in the Army Training Requirements and Resources System (ATRRS) earn four points per week of training, with a week defined as 40 training hours. Other military resident courses or Army-funded civilian-equivalent courses earn five points per full week.1Headquarters Department of the Army. Army Regulation 600-8-19 Enlisted Promotions and Demotions Partial weeks don’t count and can’t be combined with leftover days from other courses; a 17-day course counts as two weeks. Specialists and Corporals with BLC completed receive 25 points under other resident training.

Correspondence Courses

Army correspondence courses and computer-based training through ATRRS earn one promotion point per five hours of completed training. Only fully completed courses count. The subcategory maximum is 78 points for SGT and 84 for SSG.1Headquarters Department of the Army. Army Regulation 600-8-19 Enlisted Promotions and Demotions These are one of the more accessible ways to accumulate points during downtime.

Specialized Qualification Courses

Completing Ranger, Special Forces, or Sapper qualification earns 40 promotion points per course, awarded only on full completion.1Headquarters Department of the Army. Army Regulation 600-8-19 Enlisted Promotions and Demotions

Civilian Education Points

Civilian education can contribute up to 135 points for SGT and 160 for SSG.1Headquarters Department of the Army. Army Regulation 600-8-19 Enlisted Promotions and Demotions

College Credit and Degrees

You earn two promotion points per semester hour of completed college credit. Completing a degree while on active duty earns an additional 20 points on top of the per-credit-hour total.1Headquarters Department of the Army. Army Regulation 600-8-19 Enlisted Promotions and Demotions Any accredited college credit counts, though coursework related to your MOS carries side benefits for your evaluations.

Professional Certifications

Civilian credentials earn points on a tiered scale based on how directly they relate to your military job. MOS-enhancing credentials approved by HRC and the Army Continuing Education System earn 15 points each. Professional development credentials connected to military training and skills earn 10 points each. Nationally recognized personal credentials earn 5 points each. You can mix credential types up to a combined maximum of 50 points.1Headquarters Department of the Army. Army Regulation 600-8-19 Enlisted Promotions and Demotions

To qualify for points, a certification must be listed on Army Credentialing Opportunities On-Line (COOL), must be current with the certifying authority, and you must present the original documentation to your promotion work center before points are awarded.2Department of Defense. Technical Certification and Promotion Points Recertification of an existing credential does not earn additional points. One or two high-value MOS-related certifications often beats chasing several lower-tier ones.

Awards, Decorations, and Combat Service

Awards and decorations max out at 145 points for SGT and 165 for SSG.1Headquarters Department of the Army. Army Regulation 600-8-19 Enlisted Promotions and Demotions Point values from Table 3-5 of AR 600-8-19:

  • Soldier’s Medal or higher, including Distinguished Service Cross and Silver Star: 35 points each
  • Bronze Star Medal with “V” device: 35 points each
  • Bronze Star Medal or Purple Heart: 30 points each
  • Army Commendation Medal with “V” device: 25 points each
  • Army Commendation Medal: 20 points each
  • Army Achievement Medal: 10 points each
  • Certificate of Achievement: 5 points each, up to 20 points from certificates alone

Combat zone service earns 2 promotion points per month deployed, capped at 30 points for SGT (15 months) and 60 points for SSG (30 months). Combat points count within the same awards and decorations category maximum. Volunteering for demanding assignments and competing in Soldier or NCO of the Month and Quarter boards creates opportunities for the recognition that feeds this category.

Army Combat Fitness Test Points

Your ACFT score converts directly to promotion points using Table 3-4 of AR 600-8-19. A perfect 600 earns the full 120 points. The minimum passing score of 360 earns just 1 point.1Headquarters Department of the Army. Army Regulation 600-8-19 Enlisted Promotions and Demotions You have to pass every required event to qualify for any points from the test. That 120-point spread between the floor and the ceiling is one of the largest single differentiators in the whole system, and it rewards daily training over cramming before a test date.

Weapons Qualification Points

Marksmanship points come from your most recent qualification score on your primary weapon, and that score must be less than 24 months old.1Headquarters Department of the Army. Army Regulation 600-8-19 Enlisted Promotions and Demotions Points are calculated on hits, not badge level. For the M4/M16, a perfect 40 out of 40 earns 160 points for SGT or 110 for SSG. A Sharpshooter-level qualification in the mid-30s earns roughly 120 to 145 points for SGT. A minimum Marksman qualification of 23 hits earns 33 points for SGT and 28 for SSG. Every extra round on target during qualification is real promotion points.

The 150-Point PME Bonus

Beginning with the June 2024 promotion month, the Army suspended the requirement to complete PME before promoting to NCO ranks below Sergeant Major. No PME is required for promotion to SGT. Promotion to SSG still requires BLC completion for both board appearance and pin-on.3The Integrated Personnel and Pay System – Army. G-1 Sends: Suspension of Temporary Promotions and Select, Train, Educate and Promote (STEP) Policy

To keep Soldiers motivated to attend PME, the Army now awards 150 promotion points to Soldiers recommended for SGT who graduate BLC, and 150 points to Soldiers recommended for SSG who graduate ALC.3The Integrated Personnel and Pay System – Army. G-1 Sends: Suspension of Temporary Promotions and Select, Train, Educate and Promote (STEP) Policy These points sit on top of your existing total. In competitive MOSs with high cutoffs, this bonus alone can decide whether you promote this year.

Category Maximums at a Glance

The caps below limit how much any one area can contribute. The total across all five cannot exceed 800.1Headquarters Department of the Army. Army Regulation 600-8-19 Enlisted Promotions and Demotions

  • Military education: 240 for SGT, 245 for SSG
  • Civilian education: 135 for SGT, 160 for SSG
  • Awards and decorations: 145 for SGT, 165 for SSG
  • ACFT: 120 for both
  • Weapons qualification: 160 for SGT, 110 for SSG

Because of the caps, you can’t compensate for a weak area by overloading a strong one. A Soldier with a perfect qualification, a 600 ACFT, no civilian education, and minimal awards still falls well short of 800. Spreading effort across all five categories is the only way to build a competitive total, and in high-cutoff MOSs, Soldiers who neglect even one rarely promote on time.

How Cutoff Scores Turn Points Into Promotions

Your point total only matters against the monthly cutoff for your MOS. HRC takes a data snapshot on the second calendar day of each month and uses known requirements and inventory data to set cutoff scores for every MOS at both SGT and SSG. Meet or exceed the published score and you promote that month. Miss it and you wait for the next announcement.

Cutoffs move with need. An understrength MOS can drop as low as 24, essentially meaning not enough eligible Soldiers exist to fill the slots. An overstrength MOS can push cutoffs to 798, meaning no promotions are needed.4U.S. Army. Regular Army Precision Retention MILPER Message 25-133 Two Soldiers with identical point totals can promote in very different months based on MOS alone. HRC publishes the SGT/SSG Trend Report around the 20th of each month, showing eligible Soldiers by MOS across point ranges so you can see where you stand before cutoffs drop.5U.S. Army Human Resources Command. Tracking Your Points in IPPS-A

The Integrated Personnel and Pay System-Army (IPPS-A) is the system of record for promotion point calculations. To pull your Promotion Point Worksheet, go to Self-Service, then Promotion Points, and select the PPW Report. All enlisted members from E-1 through E-5 can view it regardless of whether they are currently before a promotion board.6The Integrated Personnel and Pay System – Army. IPPS-A Self-Service User Guide You can also review your history through the OML/Promotion Points path.

Check your PPW regularly. Administrative errors and missing documentation are common, and finding a problem the month you expected to promote is too late to fix it. If course completions, awards, or updated transcripts are missing, gather the supporting documents and work with your unit’s S1 section to get them entered. The longer you wait, the more cycles you risk missing.

Eligibility and Flags That Block Promotion

Points alone don’t promote you. You still need minimum time in your current grade (TIG) and total time in service (TIS). For SGT, the primary zone requires 10 months TIG, and the secondary zone (early promotion for Soldiers clearly ahead of peers) requires 4 months TIG. For SSG, the secondary zone requires 6 months TIG.1Headquarters Department of the Army. Army Regulation 600-8-19 Enlisted Promotions and Demotions Specific TIS thresholds and the primary zone TIG for SSG live in the promotion criteria tables and can shift with policy, so verify the current figures in IPPS-A or with your S1.

An active flag under AR 600-8-2 blocks both your board appearance and any promotion or lateral appointment. Common reasons include failing the fitness test, failing height and weight standards, or being under investigation or adverse action. A flagged Soldier cannot be promoted regardless of point total. Resolving the underlying issue is the only path forward; your chain of command must lift the flag before you re-enter the promotion system.

You also have to clear a unit-level promotion board before you can accumulate points on the recommended list. The board doesn’t award promotion points, but a “do not recommend” outcome stops the process entirely.1Headquarters Department of the Army. Army Regulation 600-8-19 Enlisted Promotions and Demotions
