How to E-File IRS Form 4868: Methods, Deadlines, and Confirmation

To e-file Form 4868, submit it through tax preparation software, the IRS Free File program, or by making an electronic payment through IRS Direct Pay, EFTPS, or a debit or credit card processor and marking the payment as an extension. Do it by April 15, 2026, and your federal filing deadline for your 2025 return moves automatically to October 15, 2026, with no IRS approval required.1Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 304, Extensions of Time To File Your Tax Return One thing to be clear on before you start: the extension buys you time to file, not time to pay. Any tax you owe is still due April 15, and unpaid balances start collecting penalties and interest the next day.

The Deadline You’re Filing Against

The IRS opened the 2026 filing season on January 26, 2026.2Internal Revenue Service. IRS Announces First Day of 2026 Filing Season Your Form 4868 has to reach the IRS by April 15, 2026, the same day your return would otherwise be due. Once accepted, your new filing deadline is October 15, 2026.3Internal Revenue Service. Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return

Miss April 15 without either filing the return or filing the extension, and you lose the option — Form 4868 is only good if it’s timely.

What to Have Ready Before You Open the Form

Form 4868 is short, but four pieces of information do the work:

  • Your full legal name, current mailing address, and Social Security Number or ITIN. Joint filers include both spouses’ SSNs.3Internal Revenue Service. Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return
  • Your estimated total 2025 tax liability (Line 4). Pull your W-2s, 1099s, and any freelance or investment records and calculate a reasonable figure.
  • Total payments already made toward 2025 tax (Line 5): withholding, quarterly estimated payments, and credits you expect to claim.
  • Balance due (Line 6): Line 4 minus Line 5. If you can, pay this with the extension.

Spend an hour getting the estimate close. A wildly low number can still trigger a failure-to-pay penalty later if your real liability comes in much higher, and the practical target is to have at least 90 percent of your actual liability covered by April 15.4Internal Revenue Service. Three Ways to E-File the Extension

You have three electronic paths, and they all get you the same six-month result. The difference is whether you’re transmitting the form itself or letting a payment stand in for the form.

Tax Software or IRS Free File

Most commercial tax software includes an extension option that walks you through the Form 4868 fields, calculates your balance due, and transmits the form. If your adjusted gross income for 2025 was $89,000 or less, you can file the extension free through a participating provider in the IRS Free File program.5Internal Revenue Service. 2026 Tax Filing Season Opens With Several Free Filing Options Available Free File Fillable Forms is available at any income level but offers less guidance during data entry.

IRS Direct Pay

If you owe and want to skip the form entirely, make a payment through IRS Direct Pay and select “Extension” as the reason. The system applies the payment to Form 4868 automatically, with no separate form to file.6Internal Revenue Service. Types of Payments Available to Individuals Through Direct Pay Direct Pay pulls funds from your bank account and gives you an immediate confirmation number. This option runs from January 1 through the April 15 due date.7Internal Revenue Service. Get an Extension To File Your Tax Return

Debit Card, Credit Card, or EFTPS

Paying at least $1 of your estimated balance by debit or credit card through an IRS-approved payment processor also counts as filing the extension, with no separate Form 4868 needed.8Internal Revenue Service. Pay by Debit or Credit Card When You E-File The Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS) works the same way. Card processors charge a convenience fee, typically around 2 percent for credit cards, so pushing a large balance through a card can get expensive.

Signing and Submitting

Before the extension transmits, the software has to verify your identity. You sign electronically one of two ways: by entering your prior-year adjusted gross income, or by creating a five-digit self-select PIN.9Internal Revenue Service. Signing the Return Joint filers each need their own PIN. If the software autofills from a prior return, the AGI method usually goes through with no extra steps.10Internal Revenue Service. Validating Your Electronically Filed Tax Return

If the IRS has issued you an Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN), you don’t need it for Form 4868. IP PINs are required only on the actual return, not on extension requests.11Internal Revenue Service. Frequently Asked Questions About the Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN)

Once identity is verified, a final submit button transmits the encrypted data to the IRS. If you flagged a balance due, the system prompts for bank routing and account numbers for a direct withdrawal, or card details if you’re paying by debit or credit. Transmission is almost instant.

Confirmation and Rejected Filings

You’ll typically get an electronic acknowledgment within 24 to 48 hours confirming the IRS accepted the extension.1Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 304, Extensions of Time To File Your Tax Return Save it. If you filed by Direct Pay or a card payment instead, the payment confirmation number is your proof.

If the IRS rejects the submission, the system sends back an error code. The usual culprits are a mismatched SSN, an incorrect date of birth, or a prior-year AGI that doesn’t match IRS records. You have five calendar days from the rejection to fix the error and resubmit; if you do, the IRS treats the resubmission as filed on the original date.12Internal Revenue Service. Publication 4163, Modernized e-File (MeF) Information for Authorized IRS e-file Providers Don’t ignore a rejection notice near the deadline. Blow past the five-day window and your extension can count as late.

What the Extension Doesn’t Do

This is the point that trips up the most people. Form 4868 extends your time to file. It does not extend your time to pay.6Internal Revenue Service. Types of Payments Available to Individuals Through Direct Pay Any tax owed for 2025 is due April 15, 2026, and balances after that accrue both penalty and interest.

Filing the extension is still worth it even if you can’t pay a cent. Without an extension, you face the failure-to-file penalty of 5 percent per month, up to 25 percent, on top of the failure-to-pay penalty.13Internal Revenue Service. Information About Your Notice, Penalty and Interest The extension eliminates the larger failure-to-file penalty entirely. You’re left with the smaller failure-to-pay penalty at 0.5 percent per month, also capped at 25 percent.14Internal Revenue Service. Failure to Pay Penalty Pay at least 90 percent of your actual liability by April 15 and settle the rest by October 15, and the IRS generally waives the payment penalty too.4Internal Revenue Service. Late Filing and Late Payment Penalties

Interest is separate from the penalty and runs on the unpaid balance, compounded daily. The individual underpayment rate is 7 percent annually for the first quarter of 202615Internal Revenue Service. Interest Rates Remain the Same for the First Quarter of 2026 and drops to 6 percent for the second quarter, April through June 2026.16Internal Revenue Service. Internal Revenue Bulletin: 2026-08 The IRS adjusts rates quarterly, so later quarters may differ. Interest has no cap and runs until you pay in full.

If you set up an approved installment agreement, the failure-to-pay rate drops to 0.25 percent per month while the agreement is in effect.14Internal Revenue Service. Failure to Pay Penalty That’s half the standard rate, and it’s worth thinking about if you already know October’s balance will be hard to cover.

State Returns Are Separate

A federal Form 4868 does not automatically extend your state return everywhere. Most states with an income tax accept a federal extension as a valid state extension, and many just ask you to include a copy when you eventually file. A handful require a separate state form, and some only honor the federal extension if you don’t owe a state balance. Check your state’s revenue department site before assuming you’re covered. State extensions typically take a few minutes online and keep a separate set of late-filing penalties off your bill.

Gift Tax Returns

A timely Form 4868 also extends the filing deadline for Form 709, the gift tax return. It does not extend the time to pay any gift or generation-skipping transfer tax. Payment is still due April 15, and if you need to pay gift tax specifically, the IRS points you to Form 8892.3Internal Revenue Service.
