How to Dispute a Hard Inquiry on Credit Karma

To dispute a hard inquiry on Credit Karma, open your TransUnion credit report inside the app or website, find the inquiry in the hard inquiries section, and use the Direct Dispute tool to send your challenge straight to TransUnion.1Intuit Credit Karma. Check Your Free Credit Reports The tool only works for inquiries you did not authorize, such as those tied to identity theft or a lender pulling your report without permission, so the first thing to confirm is whether your inquiry actually qualifies.

Which Hard Inquiries You Can Actually Dispute

A hard inquiry is accurate if you applied for credit, even if the lender denied you or you decided not to move forward. Those stay. The grounds for removal are narrower:

  • Identity theft, where someone used your information to apply for credit in your name.
  • No authorization, where a lender pulled your report without an application from you.
  • Mistaken identity, where an inquiry belongs to someone else and landed on your file by error.

Disputing an inquiry you did authorize risks being flagged as frivolous, which lets the bureau stop the investigation and ask you for more evidence before doing anything further.2Federal Trade Commission. Disputing Errors on Your Credit Reports

What to Gather Before You Start

Pull the information together before you open the dispute form so the session doesn’t time out on you:

  • The exact lender name as it appears on your report.
  • The date the inquiry was recorded.
  • A short, factual reason, such as “I never applied for credit with this lender” or “this inquiry resulted from identity theft.”
  • Supporting documents saved as images or PDFs. For fraud, that means an identity theft report from IdentityTheft.gov or a police report; if a creditor has admitted an error in writing, include that letter too.3Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. How Do I Dispute an Error on My Credit Report

If you’re challenging more than one inquiry, keep each one’s documentation separate.

Filing the Dispute Through Credit Karma

Credit Karma’s Direct Dispute feature submits your challenge to TransUnion without sending you off to another site.1Intuit Credit Karma. Check Your Free Credit Reports The flow:

  • Sign in to your Credit Karma account.
  • From the dashboard, open your credit reports and select the TransUnion report.
  • Scroll to the hard inquiries section and select the entry you want to challenge.
  • Choose the dispute option on that inquiry.
  • Pick the reason, type your explanation in the comments field, and upload your supporting documents using the attachment feature.
  • On the review screen, confirm the lender name, date, reason, and attached files, then submit.

You should land on a confirmation screen with a reference number, and an email receipt usually follows. From there you can track status in your Credit Karma dashboard or on TransUnion’s site.4TransUnion. Credit Disputes

Inquiries on Your Equifax or Experian Report

The Direct Dispute tool only sends disputes to TransUnion, even though Credit Karma also shows you an Equifax report.5Intuit Credit Karma. Credit Karma does not show your Experian report at all. If an unauthorized inquiry could be on your Experian file as well, you need to check it separately through Experian or by pulling your free report at AnnualCreditReport.com.

What Happens After You Submit

Once the bureau receives your dispute, the Fair Credit Reporting Act gives it 30 days to investigate and resolve the issue. If you send in more information while that clock is running, the deadline can extend by up to 15 days, for a maximum of 45.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681i – Procedure in Case of Disputed Accuracy

The bureau contacts the lender behind the inquiry and asks it to verify you authorized the credit pull. If the lender confirms authorization with evidence, the inquiry stays. If the lender can’t prove it or doesn’t respond, the bureau must remove it. The result reaches you by email or through your Credit Karma dashboard.

If the Inquiry Came From Identity Theft

Identity theft victims have a faster route. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, a bureau must block information you identify as resulting from identity theft within four business days of receiving the required documents.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681c-2 – Block of Information Resulting From Identity Theft To qualify, you need to submit:

  • Proof of your identity.
  • A copy of your identity theft report, filed at IdentityTheft.gov or with the police.9IdentityTheft.gov. IdentityTheft.gov
  • Identification of the specific information you say is the result of identity theft.
  • A statement that you did not authorize it.

IdentityTheft.gov, run by the FTC, is usually the simplest way to generate an official report. It asks you a series of questions, produces a recovery plan, and generates a report the bureaus accept. Filing a false identity theft report is a crime.

If Your Dispute Is Denied

A verified result isn’t the end of the road.

Add a Statement to Your File

You can add a short written statement to your credit file explaining why you still believe the inquiry is wrong. The bureau may hold you to 100 words if it offers to help you condense the summary. Lenders who pull your report later will see it alongside the inquiry.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681i – Procedure in Case of Disputed Accuracy

Dispute Directly With the Lender

You can also go to the lender that pulled your credit and ask it to remove the inquiry. A lender that receives a direct dispute from a consumer has to conduct a reasonable investigation unless it finds the dispute frivolous, in which case it has five business days to tell you and explain what else it needs.10Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. File a Complaint With the CFPB

If neither the bureau nor the lender fixes the problem, you can file a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The CFPB forwards your complaint to the company and generally expects a response within 15 days, with up to 60 for complex cases.12Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
