You can delete a FAFSA form only while it is still unsubmitted — that is, while its status shows Draft or In Progress in your studentaid.gov Dashboard. Once the Department of Education processes the application, it becomes a permanent federal record and cannot be erased. If your form has already been processed, the closest you can get to deleting it is removing schools from the form and contacting each college directly to withdraw your aid request.
Check the Status Before You Try to Delete Anything

Your form will show one of six statuses:
- Draft — your section of the FAFSA is incomplete.
- In Progress — you signed and completed your section, but the form has not been submitted yet, usually because a contributor such as a parent still needs to finish their part.
- In Review — the form was submitted but has not finished processing.
- Action Required — consent, approval, a signature, or a correction is missing.
- Processed — the application went through successfully.
- Closed — the form was never submitted and can no longer be submitted because the federal deadline has passed.

Deleting a Draft or In-Progress FAFSA
If the status qualifies, deletion takes a few clicks. From the Dashboard, open “My Activity,” select the FAFSA form you want to remove, and look inside the form’s summary for the option to delete the application.4Federal Student Aid. How Do I Delete My FAFSA Form The system will ask you to confirm.
Once you confirm, everything you entered — income figures, household information, school selections — is cleared from the portal. No school or federal agency received the data, and your Dashboard will no longer show an active application for that award year. In past FAFSA cycles, the Department of Education has actually recommended deleting a problematic application and starting a new one as a workaround for certain technical issues.
What to Do if Your FAFSA Was Already Processed
A processed FAFSA stays in the federal system, but you can control who continues to receive your information by removing schools from the form.4Federal Student Aid. How Do I Delete My FAFSA Form The steps:
- Log in to studentaid.gov and open your Dashboard.
- Select the submitted FAFSA in “My Activity.”
- Open the processed submission.
- Click “Add or Remove Schools.”
- Remove the schools you no longer want to receive your data.
- Submit the update.

One limitation matters here. Removing a school stops it from automatically receiving any new or updated FAFSA information, but the college keeps whatever data it already downloaded while it was listed on your form.2Federal Student Aid. Contact the College to Withdraw the Aid Request
Because a removed school still holds your earlier data, you should follow up with the college’s financial aid office if you want it to stop working on your file. Give your name and any student ID number the school uses so the staff can locate you. A phone call backed up in writing — email or the school’s online form — creates a record of your intent.
Once you withdraw the request, the school will stop packaging grants, loans, or work-study for you for the upcoming term. Some campuses may also route you to the registrar or business office to handle enrollment or billing loose ends, so ask whether anything else is required on your end.
Filing Again After Deleting

If instead you had a processed FAFSA and removed all the schools from it, the master record still exists with the Department of Education. Timing is the last thing to weigh. Many state grant programs and individual colleges set priority deadlines well before June 30. Delete a draft in the fall and refile in the spring, and you may find that state or institutional aid has already been allocated. Check your state’s deadline and each school’s priority date before you delete.
