How to Defer Student Loans: Eligibility, Costs, and Application

To defer federal student loans, you apply through your loan servicer using the deferment form that matches your situation — unemployment, economic hardship, active military service, at least half-time enrollment in school, cancer treatment, or a qualifying graduate fellowship — and submit documentation proving you meet that category’s rules. Deferment is rarely automatic. You have to request it, prove you qualify, and keep making payments until your servicer confirms approval in writing.

The reason it’s worth the paperwork: on Direct Subsidized Loans, the federal government covers the interest that accrues while payments are paused. No other pause option does that.

Who Qualifies

Federal regulations set out specific categories that entitle you to a deferment. The rules differ slightly between Direct Loans and older Federal Family Education Loans (FFEL), but the core categories overlap.

  • In-school. You’re enrolled at least half-time at an eligible institution. For Direct Loans, this is often applied automatically once your school reports your status, and a six-month grace period follows when you drop below half-time or graduate.
  • Unemployment. You’re receiving unemployment benefits, or you’ve registered with a public or private employment agency within 50 miles of your address and are looking for full-time work. After the initial request, each six-month renewal requires proof of at least six serious job-search efforts.
  • Economic hardship. You’re receiving federal or state public assistance, or your full-time monthly income doesn’t exceed 150 percent of the federal poverty guideline for your household size. In 2026, that threshold is $23,940 per year ($1,995 per month) for a single person and $49,500 per year ($4,125 per month) for a family of four.1ASPE – HHS.gov. 2026 Poverty Guidelines: 48 Contiguous States
  • Military service. You’re on active duty during a war, military operation, or national emergency, with coverage continuing for 180 days after your qualifying service ends.
  • Cancer treatment. You’re undergoing active treatment, plus six months after it concludes. If treatment runs longer than 12 months, you need a new physician certification each year.
  • Graduate fellowship. You hold a bachelor’s degree and have been accepted into a full-time fellowship program lasting at least six months that provides financial support.

Parent PLUS borrowers get their own path. If your Direct PLUS Loan was first disbursed on or after July 1, 2008, you can defer while the student is enrolled at least half-time, plus a six-month deferment after they graduate, withdraw, or drop below half-time.2Federal Student Aid. Private student loans sit outside this system entirely. Any pause depends on the promissory note you signed and your lender’s own hardship policies, and there’s no standardized federal form or process. Call your lender to ask what, if anything, is available.

Documents You’ll Need

Every deferment application starts with your Social Security number, loan account number, and contact information that matches what your servicer has on file.3Federal Student Aid. Economic Hardship Deferment Request Each category then has its own proof requirements:

Write your name and account number on every page of supporting material. Keep copies of everything you send. If a servicer misplaces paperwork, your copies are the only proof of what you sent and when.

How to Submit Your Application

Download the correct deferment form from the Federal Student Aid website or your servicer’s portal.8Federal Student Aid. Student Loan Deferment Each category has its own form, and using the wrong one delays your request. Fill out every field. Mismatched addresses and missing details are the most common reasons applications get kicked back.

Most servicers let you upload scanned forms and documents through a secure online portal. Nelnet also accepts emailed documents, and MOHELA accepts faxed forms at a dedicated number.9MOHELA. Forms If you mail anything, use certified mail so you have a date-stamped delivery record. Review typically takes several weeks.

Keep paying while you wait. Submitting an application does not pause your obligations, and if you stop paying on a request that later gets denied, those missed payments count as delinquent.10FSA Partners. Grace Periods, Deferment, and Forbearance in Detail Deferment can be applied retroactively to the date your qualifying condition began, so any payments you make during review that fall inside the eventual deferment window can be refunded or credited.

If you’re already behind, don’t wait. An approved deferment can be backdated up to six months before the date your servicer receives your request, so an application filed quickly can clean up recent delinquency.

What Deferment Costs You

Interest treatment during deferment is the whole financial story, and it depends on your loan type.

On Direct Subsidized Loans, the government covers the interest that accrues while you’re in deferment. Your balance stays flat and you owe nothing extra when payments resume.11eCFR. 34 CFR 685.204 – Deferment

On Direct Unsubsidized Loans and PLUS Loans, interest keeps accruing at your regular rate. When the deferment ends, that unpaid interest capitalizes — it gets added to your principal, so you start paying interest on a larger balance. A $30,000 loan at 6 percent accrues roughly $3,600 in interest over two years, meaning you’d come out of deferment owing interest on $33,600 instead of $30,000.

You can avoid capitalization by paying the interest as it accrues, even while principal payments are paused. Most servicers accept interest-only payments through their online portal, and modest monthly payments during a long deferment can save hundreds of dollars over the life of the loan.

How Long Each Deferment Lasts

Each type has its own clock, and most carry cumulative caps across the life of your loans.

The caps run separately. Using all 36 months of unemployment deferment doesn’t touch your economic hardship allotment, and a 12-month deferment taken years ago leaves 24 months in that category.

Deferment or Forbearance

Both options pause payments, and borrowers often use the terms interchangeably. The money difference lives in subsidized loans. On a subsidized loan in deferment, the government pays the interest; on the same loan in forbearance, you owe it.11eCFR. 34 CFR 685.204 – Deferment Over a year, that single difference can mean hundreds or thousands of dollars.

Forbearance comes in two forms. Mandatory forbearance must be granted when you meet set criteria, such as serving in a medical residency or carrying monthly student loan payments that exceed 20 percent of your gross income. Discretionary forbearance is your servicer’s call, usually tied to financial difficulty, medical expenses, or employment changes.13Federal Student Aid. Student Loan Forbearance If you qualify for any deferment category, use that first.

If You’re Pursuing PSLF, Think Twice

Months spent in deferment do not count toward the 120 qualifying payments required for Public Service Loan Forgiveness. If you work for a qualifying employer, an income-driven repayment plan with a $0 monthly payment (when your income is low enough) advances your PSLF total while deferment does not. A one-time payment count adjustment processed through 2024 credited some borrowers for eligible deferment and forbearance months, but that was a limited administrative action and the standard rule still applies going forward.14Federal Student Aid. If Your Request Is Denied

Read the denial letter closely before anything else. Servicers often reject applications over fixable issues like a missing signature or incomplete documentation rather than true ineligibility. Call, ask what was missing, and resubmit with the correction.

If you believe the denial itself was wrong and your servicer won’t change course, escalate to the Federal Student Aid Ombudsman. The Ombudsman mediates between borrowers and servicers and is designed as a last resort after direct resolution has failed. Have your issue, prior steps, and supporting documentation ready. While an appeal is pending, consider requesting discretionary forbearance as a stopgap. Interest will accrue on all loan types, but that’s a smaller problem than missed payments on your credit report.
