To deduct sales tax on your federal return, you itemize on Schedule A (Form 1040), check the sales tax box on line 5a, and enter either the amount from the IRS optional sales tax tables (plus a local add-on and plus the actual sales tax on major purchases) or the total you’ve tracked from a year’s worth of receipts.1Internal Revenue Service. 2025 Instructions for Schedule A (Form 1040) You cannot deduct both state and local sales taxes and state and local income taxes in the same year, so you pick whichever produces the larger number.2Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Schedule A (Form 1040) (2025)
Is the Deduction Worth Claiming at All
Three conditions have to line up before any of this helps you.
First, your total itemized deductions have to beat the standard deduction. For 2026, the standard deduction is $16,100 for single filers, $32,200 for married couples filing jointly, and $24,150 for heads of household.3Internal Revenue Service. IRS Releases Tax Inflation Adjustments for Tax Year 2026 Fall short of those numbers and you take the standard deduction, and nothing on this page matters.
Second, sales tax has to beat income tax for you. Residents of the nine states with no state income tax have an easy call: the income tax deduction is zero, so sales tax wins by default. In states with meaningful income tax rates, income tax withholding usually produces the bigger number. The exception is a year with a large taxable purchase, such as a vehicle, a boat, or materials for a renovation. Run both calculations.
Third, be aware of the overall ceiling. Whichever you pick gets combined with your property taxes under the state and local tax cap, which for 2026 is $40,400 for most filers, or $20,200 if married filing separately.3Internal Revenue Service. IRS Releases Tax Inflation Adjustments for Tax Year 2026 If your property taxes alone already crowd that ceiling, the sales-versus-income choice stops mattering. Higher earners face a phasedown of the cap once modified AGI exceeds $505,000 ($252,500 if married filing separately), with the cap bottoming out at $10,000.1Internal Revenue Service. 2025 Instructions for Schedule A (Form 1040)
Using the IRS Optional Sales Tax Tables
Most people who claim the deduction use the IRS Optional Sales Tax Tables rather than track every receipt. The tables live in the Schedule A instructions and estimate your general sales tax spending from three inputs: your state of residence, your adjusted gross income range, and the number of dependents you claim.2Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Schedule A (Form 1040) (2025) The table result is your base figure for ordinary purchases: clothing, groceries where taxed, household goods, and other retail.
If your area imposes a local sales tax on top of the state rate, you add a local amount. Look up your base local figure in the Optional Local Sales Tax Tables, then multiply it by your actual local tax rate. Add that product to the state table amount.4Internal Revenue Service. 2025 Instructions for Schedule A (Form 1040) – Itemized Deductions (Draft)
Moved during the year? Prorate each state’s table amount by the number of days you lived there divided by 365, and do the same for local amounts if you changed localities. Complete a separate worksheet for each state and combine the prorated results.4Internal Revenue Service. 2025 Instructions for Schedule A (Form 1040) – Itemized Deductions (Draft)
If you’d rather not thumb through the tables, the IRS runs a free online Sales Tax Deduction Calculator that walks you through the same math in four steps covering income, filing status, residence, and large purchases.5Internal Revenue Service. Sales Tax Deduction Calculator
Adding Major Purchases on Top of the Table
The table covers ordinary spending. On top of it, you can add the actual sales tax paid on certain large purchases, provided the tax rate charged was the general sales tax rate (special higher rates on specific items don’t fully qualify). The qualifying categories are narrow:2Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Schedule A (Form 1040) (2025)
- Motor vehicles, including cars, trucks, motorcycles, motorhomes, RVs, SUVs, vans, and off-road vehicles. Sales tax on a leased motor vehicle counts too.6Internal Revenue Service. Publication 17 (2025), Your Federal Income Tax
- Boats and aircraft, if the sales tax rate matched the general sales tax rate.
- Building materials for a new home, a substantial addition, or a major renovation, again if taxed at the general rate.
If your state taxes motor vehicles at a higher rate than general retail, you can only deduct the amount you would have paid at the general rate. The excess is disregarded.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 164 – Taxes Luxury taxes and special excise taxes that sit outside the general sales tax framework don’t count at all.
Compensating use taxes qualify. If you bought something out of state and your home state hit you with a use tax, treat that tax like a general sales tax as long as it’s complementary to the state’s retail sales tax.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 164 – Taxes This situation comes up most often with cars bought across state lines.
Keep the receipt, invoice, or closing document showing the exact sales tax paid on each qualifying item. The documentation requirement applies even when everything else on your return comes from the simplified tables.
When Actual Receipts Beat the Tables
You’re not locked into the table. If you believe your actual sales tax payments exceed the table estimate, add up every general sales tax amount from a year’s worth of receipts and deduct the real number instead.5Internal Revenue Service. Sales Tax Deduction Calculator This path tends to pay off for taxpayers who made many large taxable purchases during the year or who live in high-rate jurisdictions where the tables may understate real spending.
The cost is organizational. You need receipts for every taxable purchase for the whole year, not just the big ones. For most people, the table method combined with actual receipts for major purchases captures nearly all the benefit without the paperwork. But if you kept the records, the actual-expenses method is always available.
Whichever method you use, only general sales taxes count. A general sales tax is one imposed at a single rate on a broad range of retail items.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 164 – Taxes Selective taxes targeting specific goods, such as hotel occupancy taxes or tobacco excise taxes, don’t qualify even if they share a receipt with items that do.
Filling Out Schedule A
Your final sales tax figure goes on line 5a of Schedule A (Form 1040). Check the box on that line to flag the deduction as sales tax rather than income tax.1Internal Revenue Service. 2025 Instructions for Schedule A (Form 1040) The amount you enter is the total from the State and Local General Sales Tax Deduction Worksheet: table amount (or receipts total), plus local add-on, plus actual sales tax on major purchases. That number then flows into the SALT limitation calculation, where it joins your property taxes and gets capped at $40,400 for 2026.
You don’t attach the tables, worksheets, or purchase receipts to your return. You do have to keep them. Hold your completed worksheets, the specific table figures you used, and every major-purchase receipt for at least three years from the date you filed, or two years from the date you paid the tax, whichever is later.8Internal Revenue Service. How Long Should I Keep Records? Without documentation, the IRS can disallow the whole deduction on audit.
The AMT Can Erase the Benefit
The Alternative Minimum Tax completely disallows the deduction for state and local taxes, including any sales tax deduction claimed on Schedule A.9Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 56 – Adjustments in Computing Alternative Minimum Taxable Income If you’re subject to the AMT, every dollar of your sales tax deduction effectively disappears when alternative minimum taxable income is calculated.
For 2026, the AMT exemption is $90,100 for single filers and $140,200 for married couples filing jointly, with phaseouts starting at $500,000 and $1,000,000 respectively.3Internal Revenue Service. IRS Releases Tax Inflation Adjustments for Tax Year 2026 If your income puts you near or above those thresholds, have your software or preparer run the AMT calculation before you assume the sales tax deduction will actually reduce the tax you owe.
