How to Confirm a Wire Transfer and Track Its Status

To confirm a wire transfer, use the reference codes your bank issued when you sent it to check the payment’s status with your bank’s wire department, and verify that the recipient’s bank has actually credited the funds rather than simply received the message. For domestic wires moving through the Federal Reserve’s Fedwire system, that confirmation usually arrives the same business day. International wires routed through SWIFT typically settle within one to three business days.

What You Need Before You Check

Every Fedwire payment generates two tracking codes: an Input Message Accountability Data (IMAD) string, created when your bank submits the payment, and an Output Message Accountability Data (OMAD) string, assigned when the receiving bank processes it.1Federal Reserve Financial Services. Fedwire Funds Service Each code combines the transaction date, an eight-character source identifier, and a six-digit sequence number. Any bank in the chain can use these to locate exactly where your money is.

International wires carry a different identifier: the Unique End-to-End Transaction Reference (UETR), a 36-character code embedded in every SWIFT payment instruction. The UETR works like a package tracking number. Every bank that touches the payment updates its status, and the sender’s bank is notified automatically.2Swift. What is a Unique End-to-end Transaction Reference (UETR)? Not all banks volunteer the UETR, but you can ask for it when you initiate the transfer.

Along with the reference code, have these ready before you contact the bank:

  • The nine-digit ABA routing number of the recipient’s bank.
  • The recipient’s full account number.
  • The exact dollar amount you sent, which the bank matches against its ledger.

All of this normally appears on the wire confirmation receipt your bank gave you at the time of sending: a printed slip if you did the wire in person, a PDF or confirmation screen if you did it online. Losing the receipt doesn’t make the transfer untraceable, but it turns a short phone call into a longer investigation.

How to Check the Status

Start with your bank’s online portal or mobile app. Most platforms have a transfers or wire activity section showing whether an outgoing wire is pending, sent, or completed. One distinction trips people up constantly: a status of “sent” means your bank pushed the payment into the clearing system. It does not mean the recipient has the money. Confirmation means the receiving bank has accepted the credit and applied it to the recipient’s account.

If the online status is vague or stuck on “processing,” call your bank’s wire transfer department directly rather than the general customer service line. Standard reps can see basic account activity but usually can’t trace a wire through the Federal Reserve system. Wire departments have internal tools to query the status of your specific IMAD or UETR in something closer to real time. Give them the reference code when you call and the conversation goes much faster.

Keep a written record of each inquiry: the date and time, who you spoke with, and what they said about the transfer’s location. If the wire is tied to a deadline such as a real estate closing or an investment funding window, that documentation matters later if you need to show you acted promptly.

How Long Confirmation Should Take

Domestic Wires

Domestic wires move through the Fedwire Funds Service, which operates on business days only.3Federal Reserve Board. Fedwire Funds Services – Data and Additional Information If you submit a wire before your bank’s internal cutoff on a business day, the recipient’s bank generally receives the funds the same day. Wires submitted after the cutoff, on weekends, or on Federal Reserve holidays don’t process until the next business day. The Fed observes all federal holidays, including Columbus Day and Veterans Day, when many commercial banks remain open for other business but cannot process Fedwire transactions.4Federal Reserve Board. K.8 – Holidays Observed by the Federal Reserve System 2026-2030 A wire initiated late Friday won’t move until Monday, or Tuesday if Monday is a holiday.

International Wires

SWIFT reports that about 90% of international payments reach the destination bank within an hour.5Swift. How Long Do Swift Transfers Take? Arriving at the destination bank and being credited to the recipient’s account are different things, though. Compliance checks, time zone differences, and local clearing can add one to three business days before the money is actually usable. Transfers routed through intermediary or correspondent banks take longer than direct bank-to-bank payments.

If the Wire Hasn’t Confirmed

If a domestic wire hasn’t confirmed by the end of the next business day, or an international wire remains unconfirmed after three business days, contact your bank’s wire department and request a formal trace. The bank uses your IMAD or UETR to follow the payment’s path through the clearing system. Most banks charge a fee, typically in the range of $25 to $50, though it varies.

A trace can reveal several things. The wire might be sitting at an intermediary bank awaiting compliance review. The receiving bank may have rejected it because of a name mismatch. Or the funds may have been credited to the wrong account because of a transposed digit. Each outcome calls for a different response, so trace results come first.

If the trace shows the money went to the wrong account, your bank can submit a recall request. This is where wires differ from most other payment methods. Under UCC Article 4A, a sender can cancel a payment order only if the cancellation reaches the receiving bank before it accepts the order.6Legal Information Institute. UCC 4A-211 – Cancellation and Amendment of Payment Order After acceptance, getting the money back requires the receiving bank’s cooperation and, practically, the consent of whoever controls the account that received it. There is no guaranteed refund, and the process can take weeks.

The speed and finality that make wires useful for large transactions also mean mistakes are expensive and difficult to undo.

If You Suspect Fraud

With a fraudulent wire, speed matters enormously. Business email compromise schemes, which commonly target real estate closings, cost victims more than $2.7 billion in 2024 according to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center.7Internet Crime Complaint Center. 2024 IC3 Annual Report Contact your bank immediately to request a recall and a hold harmless letter. Then file a complaint at ic3.gov, which can trigger the FBI’s Recovery Asset Team to attempt to freeze the funds at the receiving bank.8Internet Crime Complaint Center. Account Takeover Fraud In one 2024 case, the FBI recovered over $955,000 of a fraudulent real estate wire because the victim reported it within two days.

Why Confirmation Is on You

Federal law excludes most wire transfers from the consumer protections that cover other electronic payments. Regulation E, which limits your liability for unauthorized debit card charges and ACH transfers, does not apply to Fedwire transactions or similar wire systems used between financial institutions.9eCFR. 12 CFR 1005.3 – Coverage Domestic wires fall under UCC Article 4A, which puts far more responsibility on the sender.10Legal Information Institute. UCC Article 4A – Funds Transfer There is no $50 liability cap, no automatic right to dispute, and no mandatory investigation timeline. Once the receiving bank accepts the wire, your bank has no obligation to reverse it.

There is one notable exception. If you send money internationally through a remittance transfer provider, Regulation E’s Subpart B does apply. You have the right to cancel the transfer within 30 minutes of paying, as long as the recipient hasn’t already received the funds, and the provider must refund the full amount including fees and taxes within three business days.11eCFR. 12 CFR 1005.34 – Procedures for Cancellation and Refund of Remittance Transfers If something goes wrong, such as the wrong amount being delivered or funds not arriving by the disclosed date, you can file a notice of error with the provider, which has 90 days to investigate and must correct any confirmed error within one business day.12eCFR. 12 CFR Part 1005 – Electronic Fund Transfers (Regulation E) You have up to 180 days from the disclosed availability date to report the error.

For a straight bank-to-bank domestic wire, none of that applies. The reference codes, the receipt, the written log of each call, and the trace request are the tools you have. Save them from the moment you send.
