To compute your SSS pension, run three formulas against your Average Monthly Salary Credit (AMSC) and Credited Years of Service (CYS); Social Security System (SSS) pays whichever result is highest. The formulas are fixed by Republic Act No. 11199, and once you have your numbers from My.SSS, the arithmetic takes a few minutes.1LawPhil. Republic Act No. 11199 – Social Security Act of 2018
The Three Numbers You Need First
Pull these from your My.SSS online account or a Statement of Contributions requested at any SSS branch.
Monthly Salary Credit (MSC)
Your MSC is not your actual salary. SSS maps your reported compensation to a standardized credit through the official contribution table. As of January 2025, the maximum MSC is PHP 35,000. Anything contributed on MSC amounts above PHP 20,000 goes into a separate savings component (WISP) rather than the regular pension pool.2Social Security System. SSS Contribution Table 2025
Average Monthly Salary Credit (AMSC)
The AMSC is the figure that drives every formula. SSS computes it two ways and uses whichever is higher:3Social Security System. Retirement Benefit
- Add your last 60 monthly salary credits (counted up to three months before retirement), then divide by 60.
- Add every monthly salary credit you’ve ever had (again up to three months before retirement), then divide by the total number of months you actually paid contributions during that span.
If your final working years paid noticeably better than earlier ones, the last-60-months method usually wins. Steady earners often come out ahead with the all-months method. You don’t have to choose; SSS picks the higher of the two.
Credited Years of Service (CYS)
CYS is your total posted monthly contributions divided by 12, rounded down to whole years. Two hundred sixty-five contributions is 22 CYS, not 22.08. Every whole year matters because CYS is what unlocks the most generous formula.
The Three Pension Formulas
SSS runs all three and pays the highest. Knowing which one will win lets you estimate your pension before you file.3Social Security System. Retirement Benefit
Formula 1 (detailed calculation). PHP 300 + (20% × AMSC) + (2% × AMSC × [CYS − 10]). This one only applies when CYS is above 10, and it almost always produces the highest result for members with long contribution histories.
Formula 2 (percentage method). 40% × AMSC. This can beat Formula 1 for members with a high AMSC but relatively few credited years.
Formula 3 (minimum pension). PHP 1,200 for members with at least 10 CYS, or PHP 2,400 for at least 20 CYS. This is the floor, protecting members whose low lifetime earnings would otherwise produce a very small basic pension.
A Worked Example
Say you retire at 60 with 300 posted contributions (CYS of 25) and an AMSC of PHP 16,000.
Formula 1: 300 + (20% × 16,000) + (2% × 16,000 × [25 − 10]) = 300 + 3,200 + (320 × 15) = 300 + 3,200 + 4,800 = PHP 8,300.
Formula 2: 40% × 16,000 = PHP 6,400.
Formula 3: PHP 2,400 (CYS is 25, above the 20-year threshold).
Formula 1 wins. Your basic monthly pension is PHP 8,300. Add the PHP 1,000 monthly supplement (below) and you’re at PHP 9,300 before any dependent’s pension.
See how sensitive this is to CYS. Same AMSC but 15 CYS instead of 25: Formula 1 becomes 300 + 3,200 + (320 × 5) = PHP 5,100. Every extra year of contributions adds 2% of your AMSC to your monthly check for life.
Add-Ons That Change the Final Amount
The PHP 1,000 Monthly Supplement
Since January 2017, every retirement pensioner receives an extra PHP 1,000 on top of the computed basic pension. It sits outside the formula and is not used to calculate the dependent’s pension.4Social Security System (SSS). Implementing Rules and Regulations of Republic Act No. 11199 – Social Security Act of 2018
13th Month Pension
Every December, SSS credits a 13th month pension equal to your regular monthly pension. No separate application is required. In December 2025, SSS distributed PHP 18.8 billion in 13th month pensions across roughly 3.66 million pensioners.5Social Security System. SSS Releases P18.8 Billion in 13th Month Pension to 3.7 Million Pensioners
Dependent’s Pension
Each qualifying child adds 10% of your basic monthly pension, or PHP 250, whichever is higher. The benefit is paid for up to five children, counted from the youngest. A child qualifies if they are under 21, unmarried, and not gainfully employed; children permanently incapacitated before turning 21 remain eligible regardless of age.4Social Security System (SSS). Implementing Rules and Regulations of Republic Act No. 11199 – Social Security Act of 2018
Applied to the example: PHP 8,300 basic × 10% = PHP 830 per child. Two qualifying children push the total to PHP 8,300 + 1,660 + 1,000 supplement = PHP 10,960 per month.
WISP for Higher Earners
If your MSC has been above PHP 20,000, you’re automatically enrolled in the Workers’ Investment and Savings Program. Contributions on the portion of MSC above PHP 20,000 (up to the PHP 35,000 cap) go into an individual WISP account that earns investment returns, less a 1% annual management fee deducted monthly.6Social Security System. Workers’ Investment and Savings Program (WISP)
At retirement, your WISP balance is paid out as a fixed monthly annuity spanning at least 15 years, on top of the regular pension. So the three formulas above only work on the first PHP 20,000 of MSC; anything higher grows separately in WISP and pays out separately.6Social Security System. Workers’ Investment and Savings Program (WISP)
The 120-Contribution Rule
Running the formulas only matters if you qualify for a monthly pension in the first place. You need at least 120 monthly contributions (ten years) posted before the semester of your retirement. SSS splits the year into two semesters: January–June and July–December. Retire in September and your semester of retirement is July–December, so all 120 contributions must be posted before July 1.3Social Security System. Retirement Benefit
Members with fewer than 120 contributions at retirement age receive a lump sum equal to their total contributions (employee plus employer shares) plus interest, not a monthly pension. You can also keep paying as a voluntary member until you cross 120 months and qualify for the monthly benefit.3Social Security System. Retirement Benefit
On age: voluntary retirement is available from 60 once you’ve stopped working or running a business, and retirement becomes mandatory at 65 whether or not you’re still employed.1LawPhil. Republic Act No. 11199 – Social Security Act of 2018
The Advance Pension Option
When you file, SSS offers the option of receiving your first 18 monthly pensions as an upfront lump sum, discounted at a preferential interest rate set by SSS. You’ll get slightly less than 18 times your monthly pension, and you must elect this at the time of your initial claim; it cannot be requested later. Choosing it means no monthly pension checks for the first 18 months after retirement, so the choice matters if you’re relying on monthly cash flow from day one.3Social Security System.
