To set up direct deposit at Summit Credit Union, download the Direct Deposit ACH Start Up Form from summitcreditunion.com, fill in Summit’s routing number (275979034) along with your account number and whether the account is checking or savings, and hand the completed form to your employer’s payroll department. Summit itself does not initiate the setup; your employer enters the information into its payroll system, and your paycheck starts arriving electronically after one or two pay cycles.
Where to Find the Form
The form is a PDF on Summit’s website. Search the site for “Direct Deposit ACH Start Up Form,” or ask a teller at any branch for a printed copy. Summit describes the document as a generic convenience form, and not every employer will accept it. Some companies require their own payroll paperwork instead. Either way, the information you have to supply is the same.
You need two numbers. The routing number is 275979034 for every Summit personal and business account; this nine-digit code tells the ACH network that the money is bound for Summit Credit Union.1Summit Credit Union. Routing Number Your account number is unique to you and sits in online banking, in the mobile app, or printed to the right of the routing number along the bottom of a personal check. If you have both checking and savings at Summit, each has its own account number, so pull the one that matches the account you want the deposit to hit.
Filling Out the Form
The fields are straightforward: your legal name, your address, the routing number, your account number, and the account type. The checking-or-savings box matters more than it looks. The ACH system uses it to route the funds to the correct internal ledger at the credit union, and getting it wrong can bounce the deposit back.
Accuracy is non-negotiable. A single transposed digit can send your paycheck to the wrong account or kick the transfer back entirely. Before you submit, compare every digit against what shows up in online banking or on a check. If your employer uses its own form, copy the same details across; the fields will look nearly identical.
Signing the form also serves as your written authorization for recurring electronic transfers. Federal rules require that authorization in writing or through an equivalent electronic signature before any preauthorized deposit can post, and whoever collects the authorization has to give you a copy.2Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Regulation E – Section 1005.10 Preauthorized Transfers Keep that copy with your records.
Splitting Your Paycheck Across Accounts
If you want part of your pay going to checking and part to savings, or to accounts at different institutions, you can set up a split. Most payroll systems allow allocation by fixed dollar amount or by percentage.
Percentage splits are usually safer if your pay varies, because the allocation scales with the paycheck. Fixed-dollar splits can cause problems when a smaller-than-expected check doesn’t cover all the designated amounts; payroll systems typically dump the whole thing into the primary account when that happens. How many accounts you can split across, and whether percentage splits are supported at all, depends on your employer’s system. Ask HR before you fill in multiple deposit lines.
Submitting the Form
Hand the completed form to your employer’s payroll or HR department. Not to Summit. Summit does not initiate direct deposit on your behalf; your employer loads the information into its payroll system and establishes the connection through its own bank.3Summit Credit Union. Some employers run a prenote first. That is a zero-dollar test transaction through the ACH network to confirm your routing number, account number, and account type are valid. Prenotes can add up to 10 banking days before the first live deposit arrives. If your first paycheck after signing up still comes as paper, a prenote cycle is the most likely explanation.
Expect the first real deposit one to two full pay cycles after you submit the form. That delay sits on the employer’s side, not Summit’s. Once a deposit reaches Summit, it posts the same day.4Summit Credit Union. Summit Credit Union Funds Availability Policy If an expected deposit does not appear, start with payroll. The usual culprit is a typo on their end.
Changing or Canceling Direct Deposit
To redirect your paycheck to a different account, submit a new form to your employer with the updated details. There is no standard legal deadline for how quickly an employer has to process the change, so ask payroll how long the switch takes and time any account closures around their answer.
If you are closing an old account during the transition, keep it open and funded until at least one deposit successfully lands in the new one. The FDIC advises leaving enough money in the old account to cover remaining bills and pending transactions, and confirming all withdrawals have posted before closing.5Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). If a Deposit Goes Wrong
Federal law gives you meaningful protection when something goes sideways with an electronic deposit. If you report an unauthorized transfer within two business days of learning about it, your liability caps at $50, or the amount of unauthorized transfers that occurred before you notified the institution, whichever is less.6eCFR. 12 CFR 1005.6 – Liability of Consumer for Unauthorized Transfers Waiting longer increases what you can be held responsible for, so look at your account regularly, especially right after setup.
If you spot an error, whether a missing deposit, a wrong amount, or a transaction you didn’t authorize, notify Summit promptly. The credit union then has 10 business days to investigate. It can extend the investigation to 45 days, but only if it provisionally credits your account within those first 10 business days and notifies you within two business days of applying the credit.7eCFR. 12 CFR 1005.11 – Procedures for Resolving Errors Once an error is confirmed, Summit must correct it within one business day. Keep notes on when you reported the problem and how.
