To complete an Ally Bank name change, update your name with the Social Security Administration first, then contact Ally at 877-247-2559 or submit Ally’s contact-change form along with proof of the name change through Secure Messages, fax, or mail. Doing Social Security first is the part most people skip, and it’s the part that prevents an IRS mismatch later.
Update Social Security First
Ally reports the interest your accounts earn to the IRS using the name and Social Security number on file. If those don’t match SSA’s records, the IRS can require Ally to withhold 24 percent of your interest payments until the discrepancy is fixed.1Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your CP2100 or CP2100A Notice You get the money back at tax time, but it’s an avoidable hassle.
Change your name with SSA by requesting a replacement Social Security card. Depending on your situation you may be able to start online at ssa.gov; otherwise you’ll need an appointment at a local office.2Social Security Administration. Change Name with Social Security You don’t have to wait for the physical card to arrive. Once SSA processes the change, the federal database is updated and you can move on to Ally.
Documents Ally Will Accept
Ally needs proof your new name is legally recognized. What counts depends on why the name changed:
- Marriage: a certified marriage certificate from the county or state where the ceremony took place.
- Divorce: a final divorce decree that includes a name-restoration provision.
- Court order: a signed order from a judge granting the legal name change.
A certified copy carries a registrar’s signature and an embossed or stamped seal. A plain photocopy is not the same thing. If you don’t already have a certified copy, order one from the vital records office in the jurisdiction where the event was recorded before you start with Ally. Waiting on that document is the most common reason the process stalls.

Filling Out the Form
Enter your current legal name exactly as it appears on your existing Ally statements, then your new legal name exactly as it appears on your court order, marriage certificate, or decree. Enter your Social Security number carefully. One transposed digit can delay the update or create a fresh IRS mismatch.
List every Ally account number you want updated: Spending (checking), savings, money market, and any certificates of deposit where you’re a primary or joint owner. Any account you leave off keeps the old name, which shows up later on tax documents.
Sign the form using your new legal name. That signature becomes part of Ally’s records and will be compared against future transactions, so make it consistent with how you plan to sign going forward.
How to Submit the Form
Ally accepts the completed form and copies of your legal proof through three channels:
- Secure Messages: log in, go to Profile and Settings, then Secure Messages. Pick the account type, start a new message, and use “Attach a file” to upload PDFs of the form and your documents. This is encrypted and gives you a written record.3Ally Bank. Account Information FAQs
- Fax: 1-866-699-2969.
- Mail: Ally Bank, P.O. Box 951, Horsham, PA 19044. Use a trackable shipping method. Clear photocopies of your legal documents are standard for mailed submissions.3Ally Bank. Account Information FAQs
