To close a Chase bank account, you have three options: send a request through the Secure Message Center on chase.com or the mobile app, call personal banking at 1-800-935-9935, or walk into any Chase branch with a photo ID. The closure itself takes only a few minutes once the balance is at zero and nothing is pending. The part that trips people up is everything that should happen before you make the request: moving direct deposits, canceling autopays, and letting in-flight transactions settle so nothing bounces back onto a closed account.
The Three Ways to Close
Pick whichever method fits your situation. Phone and branch closures usually finish in one conversation. The online route takes a day or two for Chase to respond.
- Secure Message Center. Sign in to chase.com or the mobile app, open the side menu, and choose “Secure messages.” Select the option for a question about one of your accounts, pick the account, and write a short message asking to close it. Chase typically responds within two business days.1JPMorgan Chase Bank, N.A. Secure Message Center
- Phone. Call 1-800-935-9935. A representative verifies your identity and processes the closure on the call. Ask for a confirmation number before you hang up.2Chase. Chase Customer Service
- In person. Bring a government-issued photo ID to any Chase branch. The banker can close the account and give you a cashier’s check for any remaining balance, which is faster than waiting on a mailed check.
Whichever route you use, ask for written confirmation that the account was closed in good standing. Keep it. If a dispute surfaces months later, that record is what settles it.
What to Do Before You Submit the Request
The closure takes minutes. The preparation is where the money is at risk.
Move Your Direct Deposits and Autopays
Open your last few months of statements and list every recurring item: paychecks, mortgage or rent, utilities, subscriptions, transfers to other accounts. Setting up direct deposit at a new bank can take up to two pay cycles,3Chase. Direct Deposit: Getting Started so start early. Update billing details with every company that charges the old account. One missed autopay can mean a late fee, or a payment that bounces and effectively reopens a Chase account you thought was gone.
Bring the Balance to Zero
Transfer or withdraw the remaining funds so the account sits at zero. If you have a savings account that recently earned interest, wait for that interest to post before closing, so you don’t leave a few cents behind. A small residual credit can keep the account technically alive, because Chase may hold or reopen an account when money posts to it after closure.
Never close with a negative balance. Pay off any overdraft or outstanding fee first. An unpaid negative balance can be sent to collections, and collection accounts do land on your credit report.
Let Pending Transactions Settle
If you recently wrote a check that hasn’t cleared, or authorized a debit card charge still showing as pending, wait. Closing while items are in limbo can cause them to bounce and trigger returned-item fees from the biller.
Check Your Mailing Address
If Chase owes you a final check or needs to send tax documents, both go to the address on file. Log in and confirm it’s current before you submit the closure request.
Watch Out for Bonuses and Mortgage Discounts
If you opened the account with a sign-up bonus, read the offer terms before closing. Chase bonus offers typically require the account to stay open and unrestricted through the payout date.4Chase. New Chase Customer – Chase Total Checking Account Offer Close too soon and you forfeit the bonus, or Chase can claw it back.
If you have a Chase mortgage, your deposit balances may be earning you a rate discount. Chase’s Relationship Pricing Program ties mortgage rate reductions of 0.125% to 0.25% to maintaining qualifying deposit and investment balances.5Chase. Relationship Pricing – Mortgage Closing the account could cost you that discount on your next rate adjustment or refinance.
How You Get Your Remaining Balance
Closing at a branch is the fastest way to get your money. The banker can hand you a cashier’s check or move the balance to another Chase account on the spot. For phone and secure-message closures, Chase mails a check to the address on file. Under Chase’s Deposit Account Agreement, the bank returns any remaining balance, less any fees or claims, as long as it exceeds $1.6JPMorgan Chase Bank, N.A. Deposit Account Agreement If you have other open Chase accounts with at least one common owner, the bank may move the leftover funds there rather than mailing a check.
Tax Forms After You Close
If your account earned at least $10 in interest during the calendar year, Chase is required to send you a 1099-INT by the following January. That applies even if you closed the account mid-year. Chase generally mails tax documents by mid-February for the prior tax year.7Chase. 2025 Investment Tax Forms and Mailing Dates Confirm your mailing address before you close, or switch to paperless delivery while you still have online access.
What Closing Does and Doesn’t Do to Your Credit
Closing a checking or savings account by itself does not affect your credit score. Banks don’t report deposit account activity to Experian, TransUnion, or Equifax, so the closure doesn’t appear on your credit report.8Chase. Does Closing a Bank Account Hurt Your Credit The indirect risk is leaving an unpaid negative balance behind. If that debt gets sent to collections, the collection account will show up on your credit report.
The other record to be aware of is ChexSystems, a consumer reporting agency that tracks checking account history. The CFPB describes ChexSystems as a service that collects and reports data on account openings, closures, and the reasons behind them.9Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Chex Systems, Inc. A voluntary closure in good standing is not a problem. But if Chase closed the account for cause, such as overdrafts or suspected fraud, that record can stay on your ChexSystems file for up to five years, and many banks check ChexSystems when you apply to open a new account. You’re entitled to a free copy of your ChexSystems report once a year and can dispute inaccuracies directly with them.
