If you’re looking for how to claim the stimulus check in 2026, the filing windows have closed for all three rounds. The third Economic Impact Payment of up to $1,400 per person had to be claimed on a 2021 return filed by April 15, 2025, and the first two payments (up to $1,200 and $600 per person) required a 2020 return filed by May 17, 2024.1Internal Revenue Service. IRS Final Reminder: Time to Claim $1 Billion in Tax Refunds From 2020 Expires May 17 You can no longer file a new claim for any of them. What you can still do is confirm what the IRS shows was paid to you, and if a payment was issued but never reached your hands, ask the IRS to trace it.
Why You Can’t File a New Claim
Federal tax law gives you three years from a return’s original due date to file it and receive a refund. Because unclaimed stimulus payments are treated as refundable credits on a tax return, the same three-year clock applies. The 2020 return’s deadline became May 17, 2024. The 2021 return’s deadline became April 15, 2025.1Internal Revenue Service. IRS Final Reminder: Time to Claim $1 Billion in Tax Refunds From 2020 Expires May 17 Once those dates pass, the IRS cannot issue the refund regardless of eligibility. There is no extension and no appeal process for these deadlines.
Confirm What the IRS Already Paid You
Before assuming you’re missing a payment, check what the IRS has on record. Your IRS Online Account lists all three Economic Impact Payment amounts tied to your Social Security number, including any later corrections.2Internal Revenue Service. Online Account for Individuals – Frequently Asked Questions If the account shows the amount you were entitled to, nothing more is needed.
The IRS also mailed confirmation letters after each round: Letter 1444 for the first two payments and Letter 6475 for the third.3Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your Letter 6475 If you still have them, they show the exact amounts sent.
If you later received a CP10, CP11, CP12, or similar IRS notice, that means the IRS adjusted the Recovery Rebate Credit on your return. The usual reason is a mismatch between what you reported receiving in prior stimulus payments and what IRS records showed.4Internal Revenue Service. 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit – Topic G: Correcting Issues After the 2020 Tax Return Is Filed Each notice contains a toll-free number for disputing the change.
The Automatic Payments the IRS Sent in Late 2024
In December 2024, the IRS identified roughly one million taxpayers who filed a 2021 return but left Line 30 blank or entered zero even though they qualified for the Recovery Rebate Credit. Instead of asking those people to amend their returns, the IRS issued automatic payments totaling $2.4 billion, delivered by late January 2025 via direct deposit or paper check depending on the banking information on file.5Internal Revenue Service. Economic Impact Payments If you filed a 2021 return and think you may have been in that group, your Online Account will reflect the corrected amount.
If a Payment Was Issued But Never Reached You
If the IRS shows a payment went out as a paper check that you never received, you can still request a payment trace using Form 3911. The trace asks the IRS to investigate whether the check was cashed and, if so, by whom. Form 3911 is mailed or faxed to the IRS Refund Inquiry Unit assigned to your state.6Internal Revenue Service. About Form 3911, Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund
This route is still open in 2026 because you’re tracing a payment the IRS already issued rather than asking for a new one. Before filing Form 3911, check “Where’s My Refund?” on IRS.gov or the IRS2Go app. If your filing status was single, head of household, or married filing separately and the tool shows the payment was sent as a paper check, the IRS asks that you start with those self-service tools before submitting a formal trace request.6Internal Revenue Service. If You Never Filed a 2020 or 2021 Return
If you never filed and never received your payments, no mechanism exists in 2026 to claim the money. The three-year refund statute is a firm cutoff, and no legislation has reopened the window.1Internal Revenue Service. IRS Final Reminder: Time to Claim $1 Billion in Tax Refunds From 2020 Expires May 17 The IRS’s late-2024 automatic payment program reached only people who had actually filed a 2021 return.
One step is still worth taking. In some cases the IRS issued stimulus payments to non-filers based on records from other federal agencies, such as Social Security benefit files. Log into your IRS Online Account to see whether any Economic Impact Payments were ever issued to you. If the account shows a payment that never arrived, the Form 3911 trace process described above may help recover it.
What Each Round Paid and Who Qualified
If you’re trying to work out whether you were owed anything in the first place, the three rounds were:
- First round, spring 2020: up to $1,200 per adult and $500 per qualifying child under 17, authorized under 26 U.S.C. § 6428 as part of the CARES Act.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6428 – 2020 Recovery Rebates for Individuals
- Second round, late December 2020 into January 2021: up to $600 per adult and $600 per qualifying child under 17, under 26 U.S.C. § 6428A.9Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6428A – Additional 2020 Recovery Rebates for Individuals
- Third round, starting March 2021: up to $1,400 per adult and $1,400 per dependent of any age, under 26 U.S.C. § 6428B as part of the American Rescue Plan.10Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6428B – 2021 Recovery Rebates to Individuals
The core eligibility rules were consistent: you had to be a U.S. citizen or resident alien with a valid Social Security number, and not claimed as a dependent on someone else’s return for the relevant year. Full payments went to single filers with adjusted gross income up to $75,000, heads of household up to $112,500, and joint filers up to $150,000, with the credit phasing out above those thresholds. The third round phased out steeply, reaching zero at $80,000 for singles, $120,000 for heads of household, and $160,000 for joint filers.11Internal Revenue Service. 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit – Topic C: Eligibility for Claiming a Recovery Rebate Credit on a 2021 Tax Return
The first and second payments were claimed as the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit on a 2020 return; the third was claimed as the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit on a 2021 return. Each credit was fully refundable, meaning it could produce a refund even for someone who owed no federal income tax.11Internal Revenue Service. 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit – Topic C: Eligibility for Claiming a Recovery Rebate Credit on a 2021 Tax Return If your Online Account shows the amount that matches what these rules would have paid you, the process is complete. If it shows less than expected and the shortfall came from a payment issued but never received, Form 3911 is the tool that remains.
