You claim the sales tax deduction on Schedule A by checking the box on Line 5a, entering the amount of state and local general sales taxes you paid, and choosing that figure over state and local income taxes for the year. You cannot claim both. The deduction only helps if your total itemized deductions beat your standard deduction, and it only beats the income tax option if your sales tax total is larger.
Is the Sales Tax Deduction Worth Claiming
Two tests decide this before any calculation matters.
First, itemizing has to beat the standard deduction. For 2026, the standard deduction is $32,200 for married couples filing jointly, $16,100 for single filers and married filing separately, and $24,150 for heads of household.1Internal Revenue Service. IRS Releases Tax Inflation Adjustments for Tax Year 2026 Add up your mortgage interest, charitable contributions, medical expenses, and state and local taxes. If that total doesn’t clear the standard deduction for your filing status, the sales tax deduction won’t do anything for you.
Second, if you do itemize, you have to choose between deducting state and local income taxes or state and local general sales taxes.2Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 503, Deductible Taxes Pick whichever is larger. Residents of the eight states with no personal income tax will almost always come out ahead with sales tax, since their income tax number is zero. Residents of the five states with no general sales tax go the other way. Everyone else has to run the numbers.
One thing that can flip the math in a state with an income tax: a big-ticket purchase. Buying a car, boat, or home generates a one-time sales tax hit large enough to push your sales tax total past your income tax withholding for the year. If you made a major purchase, calculate both before deciding.
Two Ways to Calculate the Amount
The IRS gives you a choice: track what you actually paid, or use the optional sales tax tables.
Actual Expenses
This means keeping receipts for every taxable purchase across the year — groceries, restaurants, online orders, everything. It can produce a bigger deduction if you spent heavily, but the recordkeeping is demanding. Most filers only find it practical if they already track spending through budgeting or accounting software.
Optional Sales Tax Tables
The easier route uses the IRS tables, which estimate your deduction from your income, filing status, number of dependents, and where you lived.3Internal Revenue Service. Use the Sales Tax Deduction Calculator No receipts required.
The IRS publishes a Sales Tax Deduction Calculator online that handles the lookup. You enter your ZIP code, dates lived at each address, filing status, income, and dependents, and it returns a figure ready to drop onto Schedule A.3Internal Revenue Service. Use the Sales Tax Deduction Calculator If you moved during the year, enter each address with the dates you lived there and the calculator prorates automatically. The IRS advises entering both locations even for a local move if you’re not sure whether the tax jurisdiction changed.
Adding Major Purchases to a Table Amount
Even if you use the tables, you can add the sales tax paid on certain large purchases on top of the table figure. These aren’t routine spending, so they get separate treatment. The qualifying categories:4Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Schedule A (Form 1040)
- Motor vehicles, including cars, motorcycles, motor homes, RVs, SUVs, trucks, vans, and off-road vehicles. Leased vehicles count. If your state taxes vehicles at a higher rate than its general rate, you can only include what the general rate would have produced.
- Aircraft and boats, but only if the sales tax was charged at the same rate as the general sales tax.
- Homes, including mobile and prefabricated homes, plus substantial additions or major renovations, again only at the general rate. If you bought building materials directly, or your contractor acted as your agent under state law, those purchases can count too.
Keep the receipts. You need the purchase price and the local tax rate for each item, and the add-on amounts go on a separate line in the Schedule A worksheet.
Entering It on Schedule A
Report your total on Line 5a of Schedule A and check the box on that line indicating you’re claiming general sales taxes rather than income taxes.4Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Schedule A (Form 1040) Your combined state and local taxes — sales tax from 5a plus property taxes reported elsewhere on the form — flow into Line 5e, where the SALT cap applies.
Schedule A attaches to your Form 1040. Tax software bundles it automatically when you e-file; e-filing requires an electronic signature using a five-digit self-select PIN.5Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 255, Signing Your Return Electronically On a paper return, place Schedule A behind the 1040 in the order the form instructions specify.
The 2026 SALT Cap
Line 5e is capped. For 2026, the maximum combined state and local tax deduction is $40,400 for single filers, heads of household, and married couples filing jointly, and $20,200 for married individuals filing separately.6Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 164 – Taxes That’s a significant jump from the $10,000 cap that applied from 2018 through 2024, driven by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.
Higher earners lose part of the increase. If your modified adjusted gross income exceeds $505,000 ($252,500 for married filing separately), the $40,400 cap is reduced by 30 percent of every dollar above the threshold. The cap never falls below $10,000, however high your income goes.6Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 164 – Taxes A married couple filing jointly with $600,000 in MAGI, for example, sees the cap reduced by roughly $28,500.
The $40,400 figure ticks up by about one percent each year through 2029, then reverts to $10,000 in 2030 unless Congress acts.6Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 164 – Taxes
Records to Keep After You File
The IRS can audit a return for up to three years after you file it, so keep everything supporting your sales tax deduction for at least that long: receipts for major purchases, the Sales Tax Deduction Calculator output if you used it, and documentation of where you lived during the year.7Internal Revenue Service. How Long Should I Keep Records
Overstating the deduction has consequences. If the IRS finds you claimed sales tax you didn’t pay or inflated the amount without adequate records, the accuracy-related penalty is 20 percent of the resulting underpayment. First-time abatement generally isn’t available for a negligence penalty, so clean records are the practical defense.
Fixing It Later If You Chose Wrong
If you already filed and realized sales tax would have beaten income tax, or you skipped itemizing when you shouldn’t have, file Form 1040-X to amend. The deadline for a refund is three years from your original filing date or two years from the date you paid the tax, whichever is later. If you filed before the April deadline, the three-year clock runs from the deadline, not from when you actually filed.8Internal Revenue Service. File an Amended Return Attach a corrected Schedule A showing the sales tax election, along with any supporting documents for major purchases.
