What You Need Before You Start

Everything on Form 8936 traces back to paperwork your dealer gave you. Pull these together first:

  • The 17-character Vehicle Identification Number. VINs never contain the letters O, Q, or I, so if you see one of those in your paperwork, it’s actually a zero or a one.3Internal Revenue Service. How to Claim a Clean Vehicle Tax Credit
  • The date you placed the vehicle in service, meaning the date you actually took possession.4Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 8936
  • Your copy of the time-of-sale report. The dealer is required to submit this report to the IRS through the Energy Credits Online portal within three calendar days of your taking possession. Without it on file with the IRS, the vehicle is not eligible. The report lists the VIN, sale price, battery capacity, and the maximum allowable credit.5Internal Revenue Service. • If you transferred the credit to the dealer at the point of sale, the credit amount the dealer applied to your purchase.

Keep the seller report even after you file. The IRS cross-references your return against it, and you may need to produce it if a discrepancy comes up.

A Note on Eligibility Before You File

Form 8936 does not test whether you qualify; it assumes you do. You still have to meet the income and price limits, and failing either one disqualifies you.

For a new clean vehicle, modified adjusted gross income cannot exceed $300,000 (married filing jointly or surviving spouse), $225,000 (head of household), or $150,000 (all other filers). You may use income from either the delivery year or the year before, whichever is lower.6Internal Revenue Service. The sale price cannot exceed $25,000, you cannot be the original owner, and you cannot have claimed another used clean vehicle credit in the three years before your purchase.7Internal Revenue Service. Used Clean Vehicle Credit The credit is 30% of the sale price, capped at $4,000.

How Schedule A and Form 8936 Fit Together

Form 8936 works with a companion form called Schedule A (Form 8936). You fill out a separate Schedule A for each qualifying vehicle you placed in service during the year.
