To claim tax back in Ireland, sign into Revenue’s myAccount, request a Statement of Liability for the year you want to review, and complete a Form 12 income tax return listing any credits and reliefs you’re entitled to. You can go back four years, so in 2026 the earliest year still open is 2022.1Revenue Irish Tax and Customs. Reviewing Your Taxes The refund itself usually comes from credits Revenue doesn’t apply automatically: rent, medical bills, tuition, remote working costs, pension contributions, and credits tied to a life change.
PAYE workers overpay more often than you’d think. Your employer deducts income tax, PRSI, and USC from each paycheck based on the credits and rate band Revenue has on file.2Revenue Irish Tax and Customs. What Is PAYE? Anything that shifts mid-year — a new job, emergency tax, marriage, unpaid leave, a credit you never claimed — can leave you owed money. The four-year deadline is strict: once 31 December closes the window on a year, that refund is gone.
What You Can Actually Claim
Most refunds come from a handful of reliefs. Work through this list before you file so you know what to gather.
Rent Tax Credit
Renting private accommodation is worth up to €1,000 a year for an individual or €2,000 for a jointly assessed couple, available for the 2024 to 2028 tax years.3Revenue Irish Tax and Customs. Rent Tax Credit You can backdate to 2022, when the amounts were €500 and €1,000. The tenancy generally has to be registered with the Residential Tenancies Board, though digs and rent-a-room arrangements with the property owner are exempt. You can’t claim if you receive the Housing Assistance Payment, Rent Supplement, or Rental Accommodation Scheme, even if you top up beyond the support.4Citizens Information. Rent Tax Credit
Health Expenses
You get 20% relief on most non-routine medical costs: GP visits, consultant fees, prescribed medications, and diagnostic procedures a practitioner recommends.5Revenue Irish Tax and Customs. Health Expenses – Overview6Revenue Irish Tax and Customs. Health Expenses – What Are Qualifying Expenses? Nursing home costs qualify at the higher 40% marginal rate. Routine optical care and standard dental work don’t qualify, but laser eye surgery, cataract surgery, and orthodontics do. Subtract anything a private health insurer reimbursed you before entering the total.
Tuition Fees
Relief runs at 20% on qualifying tuition, up to €7,000 per person per course per academic year. A disregard is knocked off first: €3,000 full-time or €1,500 part-time.7Revenue Irish Tax and Customs. Tuition Fees Paid for Third Level Education So €7,000 in full-time fees produces relief on €4,000, worth €800 back.8Revenue Irish Tax and Customs. How Do You Calculate the Relief? A parent paying for more than one child claims separately for each, and the disregard only applies once per claim, so second and subsequent children get the full 20% from the first euro.
Remote Working Relief
Work from home and you can claim 30% of electricity, heating, and broadband costs proportionate to the days you worked remotely. Add up the annual bills, multiply by remote days, divide by 365, then multiply by 0.3.9Citizens Information. Working From Home and Tax Relief Relief comes at your marginal rate, so a 40% taxpayer saves 40% of the qualifying amount. Separately, your employer can pay up to €3.20 per remote day tax-free without triggering income tax, PRSI, or USC. They’re not obliged to, but it costs them nothing in payroll taxes up to that ceiling.
Pension Contributions
Contributions to an occupational scheme or a PRSA get relief at your marginal rate up to age-based limits:
- Under 30: 15% of gross earnings
- 30 to 39: 20%
- 40 to 49: 25%
- 50 to 54: 30%
- 55 to 59: 35%
- 60 and over: 40%
Earnings are capped at €115,000 for the calculation, and employer contributions don’t eat into your personal limit.10Revenue Irish Tax and Customs. Tax Relief Limits on Pension Contributions A 45-year-old earning €60,000 can get relief on up to €15,000 in contributions, worth €6,000 at the 40% rate. If you started or increased contributions mid-year, check the relief was picked up.
Flat Rate Expenses
Certain professions get pre-agreed annual deductions for uniforms, tools, or equipment, negotiated by Revenue with trade bodies, so no receipts are needed. A nurse who supplies and launders their own uniform claims €733; a teacher claims €518; a hospital doctor claims €695.11Revenue Irish Tax and Customs. Flat Rate Expense Allowances The amount reduces taxable income rather than working as a direct credit.
Credits Tied to a Life Change
Getting married or entering a civil partnership doesn’t change your tax treatment automatically. For the year of marriage, you’re still taxed as two single people. After 31 December, though, you can check whether joint assessment would have produced a lower combined bill, and if it would, you get a refund proportionate to the portion of the year you were married.12Revenue Irish Tax and Customs. Taxation After a Marriage or Registration of a Civil Partnership From the following year, joint assessment lets you transfer unused credits and reallocate the standard rate band, which usually helps couples with uneven incomes.13Revenue Irish Tax and Customs. Joint Assessment
A few other personal credits are worth checking on your certificate:
- Home Carer Tax Credit: €1,950 for 2026 if your spouse cares for a dependent and earns under €7,200; reduced between €7,200 and €11,100; nothing above that. Carer’s Allowance and Carer’s Benefit don’t count toward the income limit.14Revenue Irish Tax and Customs. Home Carer Tax Credit Rates
- Age Tax Credit: €245 single or €490 for a jointly assessed couple aged 65 or over. Usually automatic, but verify.15Revenue Irish Tax and Customs. Age Tax Credit
- Single Person Child Carer Credit: €1,900 if you care for a child on your own. Only one parent can claim per year.16Revenue Irish Tax and Customs. Single Person Child Carer Credit (SPCCC)
- Incapacitated Child Credit: €3,800 per child for 2026 where the child is permanently incapacitated and unlikely to maintain themselves after 18.17Revenue Irish Tax and Customs. Incapacitated Child Tax Credit
One more worth checking: if your total income for 2026 is below €13,000 you’re exempt from USC, and any USC deducted is refundable when you file.18Revenue Irish Tax and Customs. Payments and Income Exempt From USC
Filing Through myAccount
The PAYE process takes about ten minutes per year once you’ve got your numbers ready. Sign into myAccount, complete two-factor authentication, and under PAYE Services click “Review your tax for the previous 4 years.” Pick the year, request a Statement of Liability, and once it appears click “Complete Income Tax Return” to open the Form 12.1Revenue Irish Tax and Customs. Reviewing Your Taxes
The Form 12 has dedicated fields for medical expenses, tuition, rent, and every other relief mentioned above. Enter your totals and the system does the arithmetic. Tick the declaration confirming the information is accurate and submit. You’ll see the result in your myAccount inbox within a few working days, and any refund lands in your linked bank account shortly after.19Citizens Information. How to Review Your Tax for PAYE Taxpayers
The Statement of Liability itself is generated from your employer’s payroll submissions and is usually available within five working days of your request. Read it before you finalize the return; if the figures don’t match your own records, sort out the discrepancy first.
What to Have Ready Before You File
You need your PPSN and myAccount login.20Revenue Irish Tax and Customs. Personal Public Service Number (PPSN) Check that your IBAN and BIC are current in your profile before submitting, because Revenue pays refunds by electronic transfer and outdated bank details are a common cause of delays.
You don’t upload receipts when filing, but you have to keep the originals for six years in case of an audit.21Revenue Irish Tax and Customs. Keeping Records Revenue’s Receipts Tracker in myAccount lets you upload images through the year, and once you’ve done that you don’t need to keep the paper.22Revenue Irish Tax and Customs. Manage Your Receipts With the Receipts Tracker Setting it up in January beats digging through a shoebox the following spring.
Emergency Tax
If you started a new job and your employer didn’t have your PPSN, or the job wasn’t registered with Revenue in time, you were put on emergency tax. The rates are deliberately harsh, so even a few pay periods can leave a noticeable overpayment.
Once your employer gets a Revenue Payroll Notification on a cumulative basis, they recalculate from the start of the year and refund the overpayment on your next payday. If the notification arrives on a Week 1 (non-cumulative) basis, they can’t issue the refund until Revenue switches you to cumulative. Contact Revenue through MyEnquiries in myAccount to find out why and ask for the change.23Revenue Irish Tax and Customs. How to Get a Refund of Emergency Tax
If you’ve left the job before the refund lands and you’re unemployed, claim the refund directly from Revenue through myAccount. For emergency tax from a previous year, use the same income tax return route: review the year, request the Statement of Liability, complete the return.
If You’re Leaving Ireland
Leaving Ireland permanently during the tax year, you can apply for split-year treatment on your employment income. You qualify if you’re tax-resident in Ireland for the year of departure but not resident the year after. Only your employment income up to the date you leave is taxed here, foreign employment income after departure is ignored, and you still get a full year of tax credits.24Revenue Irish Tax and Customs. Split-Year Treatment in Your Year of Departure
Because full annual credits get applied against a partial year of Irish income, a refund is almost always due. File through myAccount after the tax year ends, claim any credits and reliefs for the months you were working here, and the system calculates the overpayment. Leaving mid-year without filing tends to cost hundreds of euros people never realize they left behind.
