To claim tax back from Revenue as a PAYE worker in Ireland, file an income tax return through the myAccount online portal or submit a paper Form 12, adding any tax credits and reliefs you’re entitled to for the year. Revenue reviews your figures, issues a Statement of Liability, and pays any refund directly to your bank account, usually within three to five working days of the statement. You have four years from the end of a tax year to make the claim.
Why Revenue Might Owe You Money
PAYE collects tax from your wages in real time based on estimates. When those estimates don’t match what you actually owe by year-end, the gap is your refund.
Unused tax credits are the most common reason. Every taxpayer gets a personal tax credit, worth €2,000 for a single person or €4,000 for a married couple, that reduces your tax bill directly.1Citizens Information. Introduction to Income Tax Credits and Reliefs If you started work partway through the year, were unemployed for a stretch, or changed jobs, you may not have used all your credits. Revenue kept collecting tax as if you’d earn a full year’s salary, and that difference sits with them until you claim it.
The wrong rate band is another. Income up to €44,000 for a single person in 2025 is taxed at 20%, and everything above at 40%.2Revenue Irish Tax and Customs. Tax Rates, Bands and Reliefs If your employer applied the wrong code or your earnings jumped around, you may have paid 40% on income that should have been taxed at 20%. An end-of-year review catches it, and any overpaid Universal Social Charge is refunded at the same time.3Revenue Irish Tax and Customs. How to Submit a PAYE Income Tax Return
Marriage matters too. In the year you marry, you’re both still taxed as single people. If the total tax you paid as two singles is more than you’d owe under joint assessment, you can claim the difference. This often applies when one spouse earns significantly more and hasn’t benefited from the other’s unused standard rate band or credits.4Citizens Information. Credits and Reliefs Most People Miss
A large share of refunds come from reliefs PAYE workers are entitled to but never claim. Revenue does not apply most of these automatically. You have to ask.
Health Expenses
You can claim relief at 20% on doctor and consultant fees, prescribed medicines, physiotherapy, and dental expenses. Nursing home fees qualify at your highest rate, which may be 40%.5Revenue Irish Tax and Customs. Health Expenses You can’t claim any portion already covered by insurance, the HSE, or a compensation payment, so subtract those first. Keep the receipts.
Rent Tax Credit
If you rent your home, you can claim a credit worth up to €1,000 as a single person or €2,000 for a jointly assessed couple. It runs from 2024 through 2028 and covers rent on your main residence, a property you use to be closer to work, or a property your child rents while on an approved course.6Revenue Irish Tax and Customs. Rent Tax Credit The credit only offsets tax you actually owe. If your liability is less than the credit, you won’t get cash back for the difference.
Remote Working Relief
Working from home under an arrangement with your employer? You can claim relief on 30% of your electricity, heating, and broadband, proportioned to the days you worked remotely. Add total costs for those three utilities, multiply by remote working days, divide by 365, then multiply by 30%. Relief comes at your highest rate of 20% or 40%.7Citizens Information. Working From Home and Tax Relief If your employer already pays a tax-free remote working allowance of up to €3.20 per day, that amount is deducted from what you can claim.
Tuition Fees
Relief is available on qualifying tuition fees for approved undergraduate and postgraduate courses at approved colleges in Ireland, the EU, and the UK. The maximum is €7,000 per person per course. The first €3,000 of fees for a full-time course (€1,500 for part-time) is disregarded, so relief only applies above that threshold.8Revenue Irish Tax and Customs. Tuition Fees Paid for Third Level Education – How Do You Calculate the Relief Undergraduate courses must last at least two years, and postgraduate courses one to four years leading to a postgraduate award.9Citizens Information. Tax Relief for Third-Level Fees
Home Carer Tax Credit
If you’re married or in a civil partnership and one of you stays home to care for a child, an elderly relative, or someone with a disability, the home carer can claim a credit worth up to €1,950 for 2026. The full credit applies if the carer’s own income is below €7,200, excluding Carer’s Allowance and Carer’s Benefit. It tapers above that and disappears at €11,100.10Revenue Irish Tax and Customs. Flat-Rate Expenses
Some occupations qualify for an automatic expense deduction covering tools, uniforms, or professional fees. Amounts are agreed between Revenue and trade union representatives. Nurses who supply and launder their own uniforms can claim €733, hospital consultants €695, freelance actors on PAYE €750, and the range goes as high as over €1,300 for underground miners.11Revenue Commissioners. The Four-Year Deadline
You can only claim a refund for the previous four tax years. Once the window closes, the money is gone and Revenue cannot legally repay it. A claim for 2022, for example, must be in by 31 December 2026.13Revenue Irish Tax and Customs. Four Year Rule There’s no discretion to extend it. If you’ve never claimed health expenses or remote working relief, review the oldest open year first before it drops off.
What to Gather Before You Start

- Your PPS number, the identifier Revenue uses for all your tax records.14Revenue Irish Tax and Customs. Personal Public Service Number (PPSN)
- Your bank IBAN and BIC, so Revenue can transfer the refund.

- Employment details, meaning your P60 or employment detail summary for each year you’re claiming. If you changed jobs, you need records from each employer.
Filing Online Through myAccount

Claiming Reliefs in Real Time
You don’t always have to wait until year-end. Claiming on Paper With Form 12
