How to Check Your USCIS Immigration Status Online

To check your USCIS immigration status online, go to the Case Status Online page at uscis.gov, enter the 13-character receipt number printed on your Form I-797 Notice of Action, and select Check Status. No account or login is needed for a quick look. If you want a full case history, saved notices, and secure messaging with the agency, sign in to a free myUSCIS account at my.uscis.gov instead. Both tools pull from the same federal database, so the answer is the same whichever door you use.

Find Your Receipt Number First

You cannot check anything online without the receipt number. It is three letters followed by ten digits, printed on Form I-797, the Notice of Action USCIS mails after accepting your filing.1U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Receipt Number The letters tell you where the case is being handled:

  • EAC – Vermont Service Center
  • WAC – California Service Center
  • LIN – Nebraska Service Center
  • SRC – Texas Service Center
  • NBC or MSC – National Benefits Center
  • IOE – filed online through myUSCIS

IOE numbers are increasingly common as USCIS shifts more form types to online filing. The prefix does not change how you track the case.

Never received your I-797, or lost it? You can submit an e-Request for non-delivery of a notice on the USCIS website, but the agency asks you to wait at least 60 days after filing before doing so.2U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. e-Request – Non-Delivery of Notice You can also call the USCIS Contact Center at 800-375-5283 and ask a representative to look up the number using your name and date of birth.

Using the Case Status Online Tool

The Case Status Online page is the fastest route. Type the receipt number into the box and click through. Within seconds the system shows the most recent action recorded on your file.3U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Checking Your Case Status Online

A few small things trip people up when entering the number. Leave out any dashes. Include every other character, including asterisks if they appear on your notice.3U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Checking Your Case Status Online The result is a single snapshot of where the case stands right now. It refreshes only when an officer records a new action, so checking back every week or two is enough while you wait.

What a myUSCIS Account Adds

The guest tool answers “where is my case today.” A free myUSCIS account answers more. Once signed in, you can see the full timeline of actions on your case, read most notices the agency has sent you, send and receive secure messages with USCIS, and reschedule biometrics appointments.4U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Even if you filed on paper by mail, you can link the case to an account and get digital copies of certain notices, which matters if you move or a paper notice gets lost. Setup takes a few minutes and needs a valid email address plus identity verification.

What the Status Messages Mean

The wording USCIS uses is not always self-explanatory. The ones you are most likely to see:

  • Case Was Received. USCIS has your filing and your fees. It is in line for review but no officer has opened it yet.
  • Request for Evidence (RFE). An officer looked at your application and needs more documents before deciding. You generally have up to 84 calendar days to respond, and missing the deadline can trigger a denial on the record as it stands.5U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. USCIS Policy Manual Volume 1, Part E, Chapter 6 – Evidence
  • Notice of Intent to Deny (NOID). More serious than an RFE. The officer is leaning toward denial and is giving you a chance to respond, typically within 30 calendar days. Talking to an immigration attorney quickly is worth the cost.5U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. USCIS Policy Manual Volume 1, Part E, Chapter 6 – Evidence
  • Biometrics Appointment Scheduled. You will visit a local Application Support Center to give fingerprints and photographs for background checks. Date, time, and location come with the notice.
  • Case Is Being Actively Reviewed. An officer is working through your application. No action from you; wait times vary widely by case type and workload.
  • Decision Notice Mailed. A final decision has been made and a written approval or denial is on the way. Your myUSCIS account may show a digital copy before the letter arrives.

The gap between an RFE and a NOID matters. An RFE is a request for more information with no signal about which way the officer is leaning. A NOID means the officer already has a negative preliminary view and you need to change their mind. If you see either one, check the response deadline on the actual notice right away. The clock runs from the date printed on the notice, not the day it lands in your mailbox.

When the Status Won’t Change

Weeks with no movement is not, by itself, a problem. Many case types take months or longer. Before you contact anyone, open the USCIS processing times page, pick your form, category, and office, and see how long similar cases are taking.6U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Processing Times The posted time is the 80th percentile: 80 percent of completed cases were decided within that window.

If your receipt date is earlier than the inquiry date shown on that page, your case is outside normal processing times and you can act. The page includes a built-in tool that takes your receipt date and tells you immediately whether you are eligible to submit an inquiry.

The next step is the e-Request tool at USCIS. You provide the receipt number, A-number if you have one, filing date, and email address; some fields auto-populate once you enter the receipt number.7U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. e-Request – Check Case Processing USCIS considers a case actively processing if you have received a notice, responded to an RFE, or gotten a status update within the past 60 days, so an inquiry in that window will not accomplish much.

If the e-Request produces nothing useful, two further options exist. The CIS Ombudsman, an independent office at the Department of Homeland Security, helps resolve problems with USCIS.8Department of Homeland Security. CIS Ombudsman Before it will take your case, you generally need to show you contacted USCIS within the past 90 days and gave the agency at least 60 days to fix the issue.9U.S. Department of Homeland Security. How to Submit a Case Assistance Request You can also ask a caseworker at your U.S. Representative or Senator’s office to submit a congressional inquiry on your behalf. You usually need to be a constituent and show the case is outside normal processing times. This does not change the legal outcome, but it can put eyes on a file that has stalled.

Phone and Chat as Backups

If the website is down or you would rather not use it, the USCIS Contact Center at 800-375-5283 runs an automated status line 24 hours a day in English and Spanish. Live agents are available Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern.10U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. USCIS Contact Center Expect the phone system to steer you to the online tool first and to connect you to a person only when self-service cannot answer the question.

Emma, the USCIS virtual assistant, sits behind a chat icon on the USCIS website. She can point you to the right tracking page or answer basic questions, and the chat may pass you to a live agent when she cannot.10U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Avoiding Fake Status-Check Sites

Scam sites and phishing emails that copy the USCIS look are a persistent problem. A legitimate USCIS page ends in “.gov” and shows the official government banner at the top.11U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Common Scams The agency will never ask you to send money to an individual or pay fees outside your myUSCIS account.

Be careful with third-party apps and websites that offer to track your case for you. Your receipt number is what USCIS uses to verify your identity over the phone and to unlock case-specific information; handing it to an unauthorized service hands over a key piece of your immigration file. Stick to uscis.gov, the myUSCIS portal, and the Contact Center number above. If a suspicious email that looks like it came from USCIS lands in your inbox, do not click any links.
