How to Check Your IRS Extension Status Online

To check the status of your IRS extension, use the confirmation tied to how you filed: an e-file acknowledgment from your tax software, a payment confirmation number if you extended by paying electronically, or a tax account transcript from your IRS online account. The IRS does not send a separate approval letter for an accepted Form 4868, so those records are your proof.1Internal Revenue Service. Get an Extension to File Your Tax Return

If You E-Filed Form 4868

Log back into the tax software or preparer portal you used and look for the status of the extension submission. You want to see an “accepted” message or a confirmation number. That electronic acknowledgment is the only confirmation the IRS provides for e-filed extensions.2Internal Revenue Service. The turnaround is usually a day or two. If the status is still “pending” after 48 hours, check your email and the software’s message center for an error notification, or contact your preparer. The IRS will not reach out separately to say everything went through.3Internal Revenue Service. Form 4868 – Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return

If the status reads “rejected,” see the section below on fixing a rejection within the five-day perfection period.

If You Extended by Making an Electronic Payment

You can get an automatic extension without filing Form 4868 at all — by paying part or all of your estimated tax electronically and selecting “Form 4868” as the payment type. The IRS then processes the extension automatically.4Internal Revenue Service. Make an Electronic Payment and Get an Automatic Extension of Time to File This works through IRS Direct Pay, EFTPS, or a debit or credit card payment.

Your confirmation is the payment confirmation number generated at checkout. Pull it up in the account you used to pay (Direct Pay lets you look up a payment with your Social Security number and confirmation number) and save it alongside your other tax records. If you sent money but did not select Form 4868 as the payment type, no extension was triggered.4Internal Revenue Service. Make an Electronic Payment and Get an Automatic Extension of Time to File

Verifying Through Your IRS Online Account

If you lost the original acknowledgment, or you just want independent confirmation, log in at IRS.gov and request a tax account transcript for the year in question. The transcript shows filing status, payment types, and other transactions posted to your account, and an accepted extension appears there as a transaction.5Internal Revenue Service. Give it a few weeks after you filed before you check — the transcript may not reflect the extension immediately. If you do not have an online account set up, you can order a transcript by calling 800-908-9946 or mailing Form 4506-T, though both routes are slower than the online version.5Internal Revenue Service. If You Mailed a Paper Form 4868

Paper extensions are the hardest to confirm because the IRS has no tracking system for them and sends no acceptance notice. The agency only contacts you if the request is denied.3Internal Revenue Service. Form 4868 – Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return For paper filers, no news is good news.

A few practical checks:

  • If you enclosed a check or money order for estimated tax, watch your bank account. A cleared payment is strong evidence the IRS received and processed the extension paperwork.
  • If you mailed the form using USPS Certified Mail with a return receipt, or a private delivery service with tracking, the postmarked receipt proves timely filing even if the IRS later questions it.
  • After several weeks with no rejection notice and any enclosed payment cleared, treat the extension as accepted. Pulling a tax account transcript through your IRS online account gives you an added layer of verification.

Why Where’s My Refund Will Not Show Extension Status

The “Where’s My Refund?” tool is a common first stop, but it will not confirm an extension. It tracks the processing of a completed tax return and its refund, and it requires the exact refund amount from a filed return to run a search — information that does not exist yet when only an extension has been filed.6Internal Revenue Service. Refunds Use it only after you file the actual return during the extension period.

If Your Extension Was Rejected

E-filed extensions are usually rejected for fixable errors: a name or Social Security number that does not match IRS records, an incorrect prior-year adjusted gross income used for identity verification, or an invalid ZIP code. Your software will show the rejection reason.

You have a five-calendar-day perfection period from the rejection date to correct the error and retransmit. If you resubmit successfully within that window, the IRS treats the extension as timely filed, even if the April deadline has already passed. Do not sit on the rejection — the window is short and it exists specifically for these technical fixes.

If you miss both the perfection period and the original April deadline, file your complete return as soon as you can. The failure-to-file penalty runs at 5% of unpaid tax per month or partial month the return is late, up to a maximum of 25%, and filing stops that clock.7Internal Revenue Service. Failure to File Penalty One thing worth remembering while you sort out the filing side: an extension only pushes your filing deadline, not your payment deadline, so interest and the failure-to-pay penalty accrue on any unpaid balance from April 15 forward regardless of extension status.2Internal Revenue Service.
