To check the status of an IRS business tax return, you have three working options: sign in to the IRS Business Tax Account online, call the Business and Specialty Tax Line at 800-829-4933, or have your tax professional pull your account transcript through the IRS Transcript Delivery System. The individual “Where’s My Refund?” tracker does not work for Form 1120, 1120-S, 1065, or 941, so skip it. Which of the three routes fits you depends on your entity type, whether you already have portal access, and how fast you need an answer.
Check Status Through the Business Tax Account Portal
The IRS Business Tax Account is a self-service portal that lets authorized users view account balances by tax year, payment history, select IRS notices, and business tax transcripts online.1Internal Revenue Service. Business Tax Account The transcript is the piece that tells you where your return sits in processing.
The portal is open to C corporations filing Form 1120, S corporations filing Form 1120-S, partnerships filing Form 1065, sole proprietors filing Schedule C or Schedule F, single-member LLCs filing Form 1120-S or Form 1065, tax-exempt organizations, and government entities.1Internal Revenue Service. Business Tax Account LLCs that file as sole proprietors using Schedule C or Schedule F cannot yet use it.
One thing to know before you count on this route: the portal does not offer a progress bar like the individual refund tracker. You are reading the same raw account data an IRS phone representative would read to you. The transcript section below covers how to decode it.
Registering for Access
The person registering must be a Designated Official authorized to legally bind the entity. You will need the EIN, a copy of the most recently filed income tax return, and the physical or mailing address currently on file with the IRS. A photo ID is required if you do not already have an IRS online account. After you complete registration, the IRS mails a PIN to activate the role, so plan for that delay before you need the information.2Internal Revenue Service. Manage Access in Business Tax Account If you need status today and have never registered, pick a different route.
Call the IRS Business and Specialty Tax Line
The most direct way to talk to a person about your return is the IRS Business and Specialty Tax Line at 800-829-4933. The line handles corporations, partnerships, trusts, and employment tax returns including Form 941.3Internal Revenue Service. Telephone Assistance Contacts for Business Customers Representatives are available Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time. Hold times during peak filing season commonly run 45 minutes or longer.
You will go through automated prompts before reaching a person, who then performs a manual lookup in the IRS Master File. Before dialing, pull together:
- Your EIN, exactly as it appears on the filed return.
- The form number (1120, 1120-S, 1065, 941, and so on).
- The tax period, meaning the year-end date on the return.
- The filing date. For e-filed returns, use the acceptance date from your software. For paper returns, use the postmark date.
- The exact refund or payment amount, which the IRS uses to verify identity.
Calling without all of these will get you turned away. Write them down first.
Have Your Tax Professional Pull a Transcript
If a CPA, enrolled agent, or attorney prepared your return, they are often the fastest route. Tax professionals who are Circular 230 practitioners or authorized e-file providers can access the IRS Transcript Delivery System, which pulls account transcripts and return information from IRS records in a secure online session.4Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Delivery System (TDS)
This access is not automatic. The professional must have a properly executed Form 2848 (Power of Attorney) or Form 8821 (Tax Information Authorization) on file with the IRS before they can pull your business transcripts.4Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Delivery System (TDS) If you never signed one, they cannot see your account no matter who prepared the return. Form 2848 grants broader authority and allows the professional to represent you and speak on your behalf; Form 8821 only allows them to view your tax information.5Internal Revenue Service. Power of Attorney and Other Authorizations
Without a standing authorization, you can still bring a third party onto a single phone call. When you call the business line, you can authorize the IRS to share your information with that person during that call only.5Internal Revenue Service. Power of Attorney and Other Authorizations
Read Your Account Transcript
However you obtain it, the account transcript is the most detailed status tool available for business returns. It shows return filing dates, refund dates, payments, penalties, and interest.6Internal Revenue Service. Get a Business Tax Transcript It communicates through transaction codes rather than plain English. The codes that matter when you are checking where a return stands:
- TC 150 means your return has been filed and the tax amount recorded. This is the first sign of successful processing.
- TC 846 means a refund has been issued. If your return generated a refund, this code says the money is on its way.
- TC 570 is a hold or freeze on the account, which typically delays any pending refund until the issue is resolved.
- TC 420 means the return has been flagged for examination. That is not a guaranteed audit, but it means the IRS is taking a closer look.
- TC 806 means credits for withholding from Forms W-2 and 1099 have been applied to the account.
If the transcript shows TC 150 but no TC 846, the return has processed but the refund has not been released. A TC 570 sitting between them means something is holding the refund. A TC 420 makes the timeline unpredictable, and that is the point to consult a tax professional if one is not already involved.7Taxpayer Advocate Service. Know the Normal Processing Timeline Before You Worry
The IRS states that electronically filed original returns are generally processed within 21 days.8Internal Revenue Service. Processing Status for Tax Forms That applies to business returns as well. Complex returns with significant credits or unusual items sometimes take longer; returns claiming the research and development credit or large depreciation deductions tend to draw additional scrutiny.
Paper returns take much longer. The IRS publishes a rolling tracker showing which month of paper returns it is currently working. As of mid-2026, it is working through original Form 1120 series returns received in March 2026, original Form 1041 returns from February 2026, and original Form 941 returns from March 2026. Returns that require error correction or special handling fall further behind, and the IRS prioritizes paper returns expecting a refund over those with a balance due.8Internal Revenue Service. Processing Status for Tax Forms
If you e-filed and the IRS shows no record of your return after several weeks, that likely signals a transmission error rather than slow processing. Check the acceptance confirmation with your e-file provider. If the acceptance receipt is confirmed but the IRS still shows nothing, call 800-829-4933 with the receipt in hand.
Checking an Amended Business Return
Amended business returns are on a separate track. The IRS “Where’s My Amended Return?” online tool does not work for amended business tax returns.9Internal Revenue Service. Amended Return Frequently Asked Questions Your options are calling 800-829-4933 or checking the account transcript for codes showing the amended return posted.
An amended corporate return on Form 1120-X typically takes three to four months to process.10Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 1120-X For paper-filed amendments, the IRS tracks the backlog separately; as of mid-2026, it is working through amended Form 1120 series returns received around June 2025.8Internal Revenue Service. Processing Status for Tax Forms A roughly twelve-month gap between receipt and processing is not unusual for paper amendments.
When the Return Is Lost in the System
If a paper return has been sitting for more than six months with no record in the IRS system, the Taxpayer Advocate Service can step in. TAS is an independent organization within the IRS that helps when normal channels have failed. Under its case criteria, once six months have passed since you mailed a paper return and the IRS system shows no indication it was received, TAS will open a case and may recommend you refile while keeping proof of the original mailing.11Internal Revenue Service. 13.1.7 Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS) Case Criteria
Reach TAS at 877-777-4778, or ask the representative on the business tax line to initiate a referral. TAS cases generally require you to document the financial harm the delay is causing, so gather records showing how the missing refund or unresolved balance is affecting the business before you make the request.
