How to Check Your H-1B Visa Status Online

To check your H-1B visa status online, go to uscis.gov, open the Case Status Online tool, and enter the 13-character receipt number from your petition. The tool returns the most recent action USCIS has taken on the case, usually within seconds, and it works around the clock from any browser. For anything beyond a basic lookup, a free myUSCIS account, the Emma virtual assistant, and the USCIS Contact Center fill in the gaps.

Find Your Receipt Number First

None of the online tools work without the 13-character receipt number USCIS assigns when it accepts a petition. The first three letters identify the service center or system handling the case. Common prefixes are EAC, WAC, LIN, SRC, NBC, MSC, and IOE, with IOE appearing on cases filed electronically through a USCIS online account. The remaining 10 digits track the fiscal year and the day the petition was logged.

The number prints on Form I-797C, the Notice of Action USCIS mails after accepting the petition.1U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Receipt Number That notice goes to the petitioning employer or their attorney, not to the beneficiary. If you are the worker named on the petition, you’ll need to ask your employer or their immigration counsel for the number. Without it, you cannot check the status online, and the Contact Center can’t help either.

Using the Case Status Online Tool

On uscis.gov, find the box labeled “Case Status Online.” Type the 13-character receipt number into the single text field. Leave out any dashes but include every other character, including asterisks if your notice shows them.2U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Checking Your Case Status Online Click “Check Status.” The page returns the last action recorded on your case along with any next steps.

The tool covers all USCIS filings, not just H-1B petitions, and it’s available at any hour. One useful thing to know before you pick up the phone: the status shown here is the same information a Contact Center representative sees on their screen.3U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Other Ways to Check Online

MyUSCIS Online Account

A free myUSCIS account at uscis.gov gives you a dashboard where you can link every case tied to your name and view the status history for each, even for petitions filed on paper.4U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Benefits of a USCIS Online Account The account also handles document uploads, requests for evidence, and electronic notifications when something changes.

Signing up takes a password of at least eight characters (with an uppercase letter, lowercase letter, and special character) and two-step verification. Each login sends a one-time code by text, email, or authenticator app. USCIS also generates a backup code during setup; save it somewhere you can find it later.5U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Emma Virtual Assistant

Emma appears on most uscis.gov pages and answers general questions in English and Spanish. Typing “case status” prompts her to ask for your receipt number and return your current status.6U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Meet Emma, Our Virtual Assistant If she can’t handle the question, she can hand you off to a live chat agent.

The Contact Center as a Fallback

The USCIS Contact Center number is 1-800-375-5283. A live representative can pull up your case, but routine status inquiries stay at Tier 1 and won’t be escalated to an immigration officer unless the issue is complex. Wait times can run long, so the online tools are usually faster for a plain status check.

What the Status Messages Actually Mean

The Case Status Online tool uses a set of standardized messages. The ones you’ll see most often on an H-1B petition:

  • Case Was Received. USCIS accepted the petition and the filing fees. The case is in the queue but hasn’t been assigned to an officer yet.
  • Request for Evidence Was Sent. The officer needs more documentation before deciding. The notice lists what’s required and gives a deadline of up to 12 weeks. Missing that deadline almost always ends in denial, so treat it as urgent.7U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. H-1B Filing Tips and Understanding Requests for Evidence
  • Response to Request for Evidence Was Received. Your documents are in and the case is back in the review queue.
  • Case Was Approved. The petition was granted. If the beneficiary is already in the U.S. on a change-of-status request, H-1B status begins on the approved start date. If the worker is abroad, the next step is a visa interview at a consulate.
  • Decision Notice Mailed. The paper Form I-797 is on the way to the employer or attorney of record.
  • Case Was Denied. The petition did not meet the requirements. The denial notice explains why.

USCIS sends written decisions to both the petitioner and any attorney or accredited representative on file. For electronically filed cases, notices post to the online account instead of arriving by mail, unless the petitioner specifically asks for paper copies.8eCFR. 8 CFR 103.2 – Submission and Adjudication of Benefit Requests

Still at the Lottery Stage? There’s No Receipt Number Yet

If your employer submitted an H-1B registration but hasn’t filed a full petition, there is no 13-character receipt number to enter anywhere. Registration statuses live inside the employer’s organizational myUSCIS account, and only the employer can see them. Three statuses appear at this stage:

  • Submitted. The registration was properly filed and is still eligible for selection. If the initial lottery has run but the cap hasn’t been reached, submitted registrations stay in the pool for any later selections during that fiscal year.
  • Selected. The beneficiary was picked in the lottery, and the employer may now file the full petition.
  • Not Selected. The cap was reached and this registration was not picked. This only appears after USCIS decides no further selections are needed for the year.

The 13-character receipt number is generated only after the employer files the actual I-129 petition following a “Selected” result.9U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. H-1B Electronic Registration Process Until then, Case Status Online has nothing to look up.

What to Do If the Case Is Delayed

USCIS publishes estimated processing times on its website by form type and category. If your case has been pending longer than the posted range, you can file an inquiry through the e-Request tool at egov.uscis.gov. For case types not listed in the processing time tables, the general guideline is to wait at least six months before submitting an inquiry.10U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. e-Request – Check Case Processing

The e-Request form asks for your receipt number, filing date, form number, and email. Some fields auto-fill from the receipt number. USCIS answers by email, though a reply can take several weeks. If the delay is causing genuine hardship, calling the Contact Center and asking for a Tier 2 escalation to an immigration officer is another route, though routine inquiries won’t qualify.

Employers who need a faster decision on the underlying petition can pay for premium processing by filing Form I-907, which obligates USCIS to act within 15 business days by approving, denying, or issuing a request for evidence. Premium processing changes the speed of adjudication, not what the Case Status Online tool shows you.

Once You’re Approved and Abroad: Switch to CEAC

If the petition is approved and the beneficiary is outside the United States, tracking moves from USCIS to the State Department. The Consular Electronic Application Center (CEAC) at ceac.state.gov handles visa interview and issuance status.11U.S. Department of State Electronic Application Center. CEAC Visa Status Check

Select “Nonimmigrant Visa (NIV)” as the visa type, then enter your case number, passport number, and the first five letters of your surname. Two statuses come up most often. “Issued” means the visa was approved and your passport is being returned with the stamp. “Administrative Processing” means the consular officer needs more time or additional review before deciding. Administrative processing is not a denial, but it can add weeks or months to the timeline.

If Your Status Reads “Case Was Denied”

A denial means USCIS found the petition did not meet the legal requirements, and the notice spells out the specific grounds. The petitioner has 30 days from the decision date to file Form I-290B, which can be used for an appeal to the Administrative Appeals Office, a motion to reopen with new evidence, or a motion to reconsider based on an alleged legal or factual error. If the denial was sent by mail, the deadline extends to 33 days.12U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. USCIS Policy Manual – Chapter 5 – Appeals, Motions to Reopen, and Motions to Reconsider There is no extension for appeals or motions to reconsider, and most immigration attorneys treat the 30-day window as a hard deadline. If the employer plans to refile rather than appeal, the process restarts with a new registration or petition and new fees.
