How to Check Your Green Card Application Status

To check your green card application status, you need the 13-character receipt number USCIS printed on your I-797C Notice of Action, and then you can look up the case for free three ways: the Case Status Online search tool, the USCIS Contact Center at 1-800-375-5283, or a personal myUSCIS account. All three pull from the same system. The account gives you the most, because it shows your full case history and lets you read notices, respond to requests, and update your address in one place.

Find Your Receipt Number First

The receipt number is three letters followed by ten digits. It appears on the I-797C notice USCIS mailed after accepting your filing. The letters identify the office handling your case; common prefixes are EAC, WAC, LIN, SRC, NBC, MSC, and IOE, and electronic filings usually start with IOE.1U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Family-based applicants often have two cases running at once: the I-130 petition filed by a U.S. citizen or permanent resident relative,2U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. I-130, Petition for Alien Relative and the I-485 application to adjust status if you’re inside the United States.3U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Check Online

Go to the USCIS Case Status Online page, type your receipt number without dashes, and submit. Include asterisks if the notice shows them.4U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Case Status Online – Case Status Search The page shows the current stage of your case and the date of the last action. It’s available around the clock and free.

The limitation is that it only displays the most recent message. If you want the full history and the ability to read actual notices, you need an online account.

Check by Phone

The USCIS Contact Center is 1-800-375-5283 (TTY 800-767-1833). The automated system runs 24 hours a day in English and Spanish and can read out basic case information once you enter your receipt number. Live agents are available Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern.5U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. USCIS Contact Center

The system tries to route you to online tools first. If it decides your question can be answered on the website, it won’t connect you to a person. Have your receipt number and a specific question ready before you call.

Use a Free myUSCIS Account

Creating an account at myUSCIS gives you the full case file: history, appointment notices, secure messaging with USCIS, evidence uploads, and the ability to respond to Requests for Evidence electronically.6U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. How to Create a USCIS Online Account Even if you filed on paper, you can link the case using your receipt number and the Online Access Code printed on your notice.

The account also lets you report an address change, which matters more than it sounds. Federal law requires every noncitizen to notify USCIS within ten days of moving.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 8 USC 1305 – Notices of Change of Address Updating through your account meets that requirement without a paper AR-11.8U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. How to Change Your Address A missed address update is one of the most common reasons people never see a decision, interview notice, or RFE. Do it the same day you move.

Compare Your Case Against Processing Times

Your case status shows where things stand. The processing times tool shows how long cases like yours have been taking. Select your form type, category, and the service center or field office listed on your receipt notice.9U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Case Processing Times

The number shown reflects how long it took to complete 80% of adjudicated cases over the prior six months. That’s a benchmark, not a promise. The tool also generates a “case inquiry date” tied to your receipt date. Once that date passes without a decision, you’re eligible to submit a formal inquiry. If your form isn’t listed in the tool, USCIS aims to decide within six months and asks you to wait that long before inquiring.10U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. e-Request – Check Case Processing

What the Status Messages Mean

The messages follow the case through set stages. These are the ones you’ll see and what each one asks of you.

Case Was Received

USCIS accepted your filing and the processing clock started. Verify the details on the notice are correct. Nothing else to do.

Biometrics Appointment Was Scheduled

USCIS needs your fingerprints and photograph for background checks. A Form I-797C notice arrives with the date, time, and location of your appointment at a local Application Support Center.11U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Preparing for Your Biometric Services Appointment Missing it without rescheduling can stall the whole case. Treat it as mandatory.

Interview Was Scheduled

Adjustment applicants and some other categories get an in-person interview at a field office. A notice follows by mail. Bring your originals, any evidence that has expired or is close to expiring, and anything specifically listed in the notice.

Case Was Transferred

USCIS moves cases between offices to balance workloads. Your receipt number stays the same and the transfer shouldn’t add delay. If you’re past the published processing time for the new office, submit an inquiry.12U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Workload Transfer Updates

Case Was Approved and Card Was Produced

Approval means USCIS granted permanent residence. A welcome notice arrives first, then the physical card. If more than 30 days pass after you become a permanent resident without the welcome notice, or more than 30 days after the notice without the card, submit an e-Request.13U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. After Receiving a Decision For people who entered on an immigrant visa rather than adjusting status inside the U.S., the card can take up to 90 days from entry or from fee payment, whichever is later.14U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Two Status Updates With Hard Deadlines

A Request for Evidence (RFE) means the officer needs more documents before deciding. For most forms you get up to 84 days (12 weeks) to respond. Some, including the I-539, allow only 30 days. USCIS adds three calendar days of mailing time if you’re in the United States and 14 days if you’re abroad.15USCIS. Chapter 6 – Evidence USCIS cannot extend these maximums.16eCFR. 8 CFR 103.2 – Submission and Adjudication of Benefit Requests

A Notice of Intent to Deny (NOID) is more serious. The officer is leaning toward denying and giving you a last chance. Response time is 30 days maximum, plus the same mailing additions. Miss either deadline and USCIS can deny the case as abandoned, deny it on the existing record, or both.15USCIS. Chapter 6 – Evidence Start gathering documents the day either status appears.

When the Case Is Taking Too Long

If you’re past your case inquiry date, the processing times tool provides a link to submit a service request directly to USCIS.10U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. e-Request – Check Case Processing You can also call the Contact Center or send a secure message from your online account.

If USCIS doesn’t fix the problem, you can escalate to the DHS CIS Ombudsman by filing Form 7001. Two conditions apply: you must have contacted USCIS within the last 90 days, and you must have given the agency at least 60 days to respond before asking the Ombudsman to step in.17Homeland Security. How to Submit a Case Assistance Request The Ombudsman is an independent office inside DHS that can intervene when normal channels have failed.

Asking for an Expedite

USCIS grants faster processing only in limited situations, and every decision is discretionary. You generally need to submit supporting evidence with your request.18U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Expedite Requests The main grounds are severe financial loss to a company or person, and emergencies or urgent humanitarian situations such as serious illness, disability, a death in the family, extreme conditions from natural disasters or armed conflict, or safety concerns involving vulnerable people. Needing work authorization by itself is not enough.

To start the request, call the Contact Center with your receipt number, use the Emma virtual assistant on the USCIS website, or send a secure message from your online account with “expedite” as the reason. If you have an account, upload your supporting evidence there as well. USCIS will not expedite a case where the urgency comes from your own late filing or missed responses.18U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Expedite Requests
