You can check your credit without a Social Security Number, but the online shortcut most people use is closed to you. AnnualCreditReport.com requires an SSN to pull a file, so how to check your credit score without an SSN comes down to two paths: request your credit report by mail using an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) and alternative ID, and view an actual score through a bank or credit card issuer that already has your ITIN on file. The Fair Credit Reporting Act requires bureaus to hand over your file on request with “proper identification,” and it treats an SSN as one form of that identification rather than the only acceptable one.1Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. A Summary of Your Rights Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act
One thing to get straight up front. Your free credit report is not your credit score.2Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. How Do I Get a Free Copy of My Credit Reports The report shows the accounts and history on file at a bureau. The score is a number calculated from that history, and to see the number you generally have to go through a lender that offers it as a customer feature. Both matter, and the paths to each look different when you don’t have an SSN.
Why a Social Security Number Isn’t Required
Credit bureaus identify you by matching several data points at once: full legal name, date of birth, current and past addresses, and any identification numbers your lenders report alongside your accounts. An SSN speeds that matching up because it’s unique, but it isn’t the only anchor a bureau can use. When a lender reports your payment history using an ITIN, the bureau creates or updates a file under that number the same way it would with an SSN.3eCFR. 26 CFR 301.6109-1 – Identifying Numbers
What the bureaus actually need is enough information to find your file and enough documentation to confirm the file belongs to you.
Requesting Your Report by Mail
Without an SSN, the mail-in process is your route to a free credit report. It’s slower than the online portal, but the legal right to the file is the same.
You have two options. You can use the centralized Annual Credit Report Request Form, which lets you order from one, two, or all three bureaus in a single envelope. Print the form, fill in your name, date of birth, current address, and any previous addresses over the past two years, and leave the SSN field blank. Send it with copies of your supporting documents to:

Or you can write directly to each bureau’s consumer disclosure department. This is sometimes more effective for a non-SSN request because you can attach a cover letter explaining that you’re requesting your file using an ITIN or alternative identification. The addresses:
- Equifax: P.O. Box 740241, Atlanta, GA 30374
- Experian: P.O. Box 4500, Allen, TX 75013
- TransUnion: P.O. Box 1000, Chester, PA 19016
After the bureau receives your request, it processes and mails your report within 15 days. Add two to three weeks for postal delivery in each direction, and plan on roughly five weeks from the day you drop the envelope in the mail.4Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Documents to Include
Whichever route you take, include copies of documents proving both your identity and your current address. Equifax, for instance, asks for one from each category.5Equifax. What Documentation Should I Send in to Validate My ID or Address
For identity, the strongest options are a valid foreign passport, a state-issued driver’s license, or a state ID card. Also accepted: military ID, W-2, pay stub, or birth certificate.
For address, send a recent utility bill (gas, water, electric, or cable), a cell phone bill, a bank statement, a rental lease, or a mortgage statement. The address on the document has to match the address in your request.
Send copies, never originals. Use certified mail with a return receipt so you have proof of delivery if the request goes missing.
Seeing an Actual Score
If you already have a bank account or credit card, your financial institution may show your credit score for free inside its app or online dashboard. Major card issuers often pull a soft inquiry (one that doesn’t affect your score) and display a VantageScore or FICO number alongside your account. For someone with an ITIN, this is usually the easiest way to see a real score, because the bank verified your identity when you opened the account.
Look for a “credit score” or “credit monitoring” section in the app. The first time you open it, you may have to answer a few security questions drawn from your credit history. After that, the score typically refreshes each month.
If you don’t have accounts yet, you’ll need to open one before this path is available. That means having an ITIN and finding a lender that will report activity to the bureaus under it.
Getting or Renewing an ITIN
An ITIN is a nine-digit number the IRS issues to people who need to file federal tax returns but aren’t eligible for an SSN. Federal regulations set it as the required taxpayer identifier for anyone in that situation.3eCFR. 26 CFR 301.6109-1 – Identifying Numbers The IRS created it for tax purposes, but all three major bureaus can generate credit files linked to ITINs, and the scoring algorithms work identically whether the underlying file uses an SSN or an ITIN.
To apply, use IRS Form W-7. A first-time application includes the completed W-7, the federal tax return the ITIN is needed for, and original documents (or certified copies from the issuing agency) proving identity and foreign status. A passport is the simplest choice because it’s the only standalone document the IRS accepts; submit one and no additional paperwork is required.6Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form W-7
If you’d rather not mail your original passport, a Certified Acceptance Agent can verify your documents in person or by video and file the W-7 on your behalf. The IRS maintains a searchable CAA directory.7Internal Revenue Service. ITIN Acceptance Agent Program
Watch the expiration rule. An ITIN not used on a federal return for three consecutive tax years expires automatically on December 31 of that third year.8Internal Revenue Service. How to Renew an ITIN For the 2026 filing season specifically, any ITIN not included on a return for tax years 2022, 2023, or 2024 expired on December 31, 2025, and needs renewal before it can be used.9Internal Revenue Service. Next Steps to Get Ready for 2026 Tax Filing Season An expired ITIN doesn’t erase the credit file already at the bureaus, but lenders may reject it when you apply for new accounts or try to verify your identity for a credit request. Renewal uses the same W-7 with the “renew an existing ITIN” box checked at the top.
Building a File So a Score Exists
A score only exists once your file has enough activity to score. Several major banks accept ITINs on credit card applications, and options range from starter products for thin files to rewards cards for established borrowers. Getting approved and paying on time for several months is typically the fastest way to build a scorable file.
A secured credit card is the most accessible starting point. You put down a refundable deposit, usually equal to your credit limit, and the issuer reports your payments each month. After about 12 months of on-time payments, some issuers upgrade you to an unsecured card and return the deposit.
Credit-builder loans from community banks or credit unions are another route. The lender holds the borrowed amount in a locked savings account while you make monthly payments. When the loan is paid off, you get the money and the bureaus get a record of consistent payments. Some credit unions offer these products specifically for ITIN holders.
Whichever product you choose, confirm at account opening that the lender will report to the bureaus using your ITIN. If the lender doesn’t report the activity, the account won’t build your file no matter how perfectly you pay.
Once you’re providing your ITIN as your taxpayer identification number on applications, lenders will report your history to the bureaus under that number, and after several months of consistent reporting the bureaus have enough data to generate a score.
Fixing Errors on Your Report
When your file is anchored to an ITIN rather than an SSN, the risk of a “mixed file” is higher. That’s when the bureau accidentally merges your data with someone else’s because of a similar name, overlapping address history, or a transposed digit. If your report shows accounts you don’t recognize, a mixed file is a likely explanation.
Your dispute rights under the FCRA are the same whether the file uses an SSN or an ITIN. You can dispute inaccurate information with both the credit bureau and the company that reported the data. The bureau has 30 days to investigate and either correct the error, delete unverifiable information, or confirm the data is accurate.10Consumer Advice – FTC. Disputing Errors on Your Credit Reports
File in writing. Include your full name, ITIN, a clear explanation of each item you’re disputing, and copies of any documents that support your case. Send it certified mail with a return receipt. The bureau must send results in writing, and if the dispute produces a change, you’re entitled to a free updated copy of the report.10Consumer Advice – FTC. Disputing Errors on Your Credit Reports If the investigation doesn’t resolve the problem, you can ask that a brief statement of your dispute be added to the file for future lenders to see.
Freezing Your File
A credit freeze blocks new lenders from accessing your file, which stops most identity theft attempts before they start. Anyone can freeze, victim or not, and it’s free at all three bureaus.11Consumer Advice – FTC. Credit Freezes and Fraud Alerts You contact each bureau separately to freeze and later temporarily lift the file.
This matters more when your file is anchored to an ITIN and a thinner set of personal data than an SSN-based file would carry, because impersonation can be easier. When you’re ready to apply for credit yourself, lift the freeze temporarily with the PIN the bureau provides and refreeze once the application is processed. A fraud alert is a lighter alternative that flags your file so lenders take extra verification steps; placing one alert automatically triggers it at all three bureaus, and an initial alert lasts one year.11Consumer Advice – FTC.
