To check the status of your asylum case, use the tool that matches where your case sits. If you filed Form I-589 directly with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (an affirmative case), check status through the USCIS Case Status Online tool or a MyUSCIS account. If your asylum claim is part of removal proceedings in immigration court (a defensive case), check status through the Executive Office for Immigration Review’s automated phone line or its online portals. Both paths are free, and both work best if you have your receipt number and your Alien Registration Number ready before you start.
What You Need Before You Start
Two identification numbers do the work across every status tool.
The first is your USCIS receipt number: three letters followed by ten digits. Common prefixes include EAC, WAC, LIN, SRC, NBC, MSC, and IOE.1U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Receipt Number You’ll find it on Form I-797C, Notice of Action, the confirmation USCIS sends after it receives your application.2U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Form I-797C, Notice of Action Enter it exactly as printed, with no spaces or dashes.
The second is your Alien Registration Number (A-Number): the letter “A” followed by seven, eight, or nine digits.3U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. A-Number/Alien Registration Number/Alien Number It appears on your I-589 acknowledgment notice, your Employment Authorization Document, your immigrant visa stamp, and other USCIS correspondence.4U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Immigrant Fee Payment: Tips on Finding Your A-Number and DOS Case ID If yours has fewer than nine digits, pad it with a leading zero after the “A” so it reads as nine digits (A12345678 becomes A012345678). The A-Number stays with you throughout your immigration history.
Checking an Affirmative Case With USCIS
Affirmative applicants use the USCIS Case Status Online tool at egov.uscis.gov. Enter the 13-character receipt number without spaces or dashes and select “Check Status.” The page returns the most recent action taken on your case, along with a short note on what to expect next.5U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. For a fuller picture, create a free MyUSCIS account. The guest tool shows one action at a time; an account shows up to the last five actions on your case, gives you access to electronically filed applications, and lets you manage everything from one place.5U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Checking Your Case Status Online Either tool can send you email or text alerts when something changes, so you don’t have to keep logging in to see whether an interview has been scheduled or a decision issued.
Checking a Defensive Case With EOIR
If your asylum claim is being heard in immigration court, EOIR manages your case, not USCIS. There are two ways in.
Phone Hotline
Call the EOIR automated case information line at 1-800-898-7180 (TDD 1-800-828-1120).6Executive Office for Immigration Review. Asylum EAD Clock Correction Requests Follow the voice prompts and enter your A-Number. The system reads back the date of your next hearing, the presiding judge, and the court location. There is also an option for “decision information” that tells you whether a judge has granted relief or ordered removal.
Online Portals
EOIR’s Automated Case Information System (ACIS) at acis.eoir.justice.gov gives you basic status information without a login. Enter your A-Number to see your next scheduled hearing and current case status. ACIS shows details only for your primary (most recent) case, and not every piece of case information appears there. For bond hearing details or records from an earlier case, you’ll need to contact the immigration court directly.7Executive Office for Immigration Review. Automated Case Information
EOIR’s Respondent Access Portal goes further: once you register, you can view detailed hearing information, see filings already in your record, upload documents, and submit certain forms, including Form EOIR-33 for a change of address. Eligible respondents receive an official notice when they can create an account.8Executive Office for Immigration Review. EOIR Respondent Access
Checking Your Asylum Clock for the EAD
One of the main reasons to keep checking status is the “asylum clock,” which tracks how long your application has been pending toward the 180-day mark that lets USCIS issue an Employment Authorization Document.9U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Asylum You can file Form I-765 as early as 150 days after USCIS receives a complete asylum application, but the EAD itself won’t be issued until 180 days have accrued.10eCFR. 8 CFR 208.7 – Employment Authorization Any delay you request or cause pauses the clock and does not count toward the 180 days.
If your case is in immigration court, check your clock by calling 1-800-898-7180 or by signing in to the ECAS Case Portal or Respondent Access Portal. If the number of days looks wrong, EOIR accepts clock correction requests through its asylum EAD clock page.6Executive Office for Immigration Review. Asylum EAD Clock Correction Requests
When the Tools Don’t Answer Your Question
Automated systems sometimes lag behind recent activity. When that happens, go to a person.
USCIS Contact Center
Call the USCIS Contact Center at 1-800-375-5283 (TTY 1-800-767-1833).11U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. USCIS Contact Center You can also submit an online inquiry or write in by mail. Include your full legal name, receipt number, A-Number, and a clear description of what you need. Mailing addresses for written inquiries are keyed to the three-letter prefix of your receipt number and are listed on the USCIS Contact Us page.12U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Contact Us
Local Immigration Court
For court cases, contact the immigration court with jurisdiction over your matter when ACIS doesn’t show what you need. The EOIR case information page lists contact details for every court location.13Executive Office for Immigration Review. EOIR Case Information Keep a written record of the date, method, and substance of every call or message. If notice ever becomes disputed later, that log matters.
USCIS e-Request for Delays
Affirmative asylum cases often take well beyond 180 days, and current backlogs run into years. If yours has gone past the posted processing time for your form and office, submit an “outside normal processing time” inquiry through the e-Request tool at egov.uscis.gov/e-request.14U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. e-Request – Self Service Tools The same tool handles reports of a notice or card that never arrived in the mail.
CIS Ombudsman
If USCIS doesn’t resolve the problem, the DHS Citizenship and Immigration Services Ombudsman offers a second layer of help. Before you request assistance, you must have contacted USCIS through e-Request, secure message, or the Contact Center within the past 90 days and given USCIS at least 60 days to respond.15Homeland Security. How to Submit a Case Assistance Request Requests use DHS Form 7001. If you are applying for or have been granted asylum, T, U, or VAWA status and do not have an attorney, the consent section of the form requires your original wet-ink signature rather than an electronic one.
Keep Your Address Current So Notices Reach You
Status-checking only helps if the mail behind it reaches you. Federal law requires every noncitizen to report a change of address within ten days of moving.16Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 8 USC 1305 – Notices of Change of Address Update USCIS through your online account or by mailing Form AR-11.17U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. How to Change Your Address
If you have a case in immigration court, USCIS updates are not enough.
