How to Check What GI Bill You Have: Online, Phone, and Type

To check what GI Bill you have, sign in to VA.gov with a verified Login.gov or ID.me account and open your Post-9/11 GI Bill Statement of Benefits, which shows the program you’re enrolled in, months of entitlement remaining, and your expiration date. If you’d rather not go online, call the VA education line at 888-442-4551 and a representative can pull the same information. The two programs most veterans are checking between are the Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) and the Montgomery GI Bill Active Duty (Chapter 30), and they have different rules for payment, expiration, and how you look up your balance.

Signing In Online

Only two sign-in options still work for VA benefits: Login.gov and ID.me. The VA retired My HealtheVet sign-in on March 5, 2025, and removed DS Logon on November 18, 2025, so anyone who was still using those needs to create a new account with one of the remaining providers.1Veterans Affairs. Prepare For VA’s Secure Sign-In Changes

Both providers require identity verification the first time you use them. Login.gov asks for a U.S. driver’s license, state-issued ID, or passport book, plus your Social Security number and a U.S. phone number or mailing address. ID.me has similar requirements and also offers in-person verification at participating UPS Store locations. If you live outside the U.S., don’t have a Social Security number, or don’t have a state-issued ID, the VA recommends choosing ID.me.2Veterans Affairs. Creating an Account for VA.gov

Once you’re verified, go to va.gov/education/check-remaining-post-9-11-gi-bill-benefits and sign in. The system pulls your Statement of Benefits automatically.3Veterans Affairs. Check Your Remaining Post-9/11 GI Bill Benefits

What the Statement of Benefits Shows

The Statement of Benefits tells you three things: whether you have Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits, how many months of entitlement remain, and how much time you have left before they expire.3Veterans Affairs. Check Your Remaining Post-9/11 GI Bill Benefits It also displays your eligibility percentage, which the VA calculates from your total active-duty service time and which sets the share of tuition, housing allowance, and book stipend you actually receive.

The eligibility tiers work like this:4Veterans Affairs. Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) Rates – Section: How Much of the Full Benefit Rate You Can Get

  • 36 months or more of active duty: 100% of the full benefit
  • 30 to 35 months: 90%
  • 24 to 29 months: 80%
  • 18 to 23 months: 70%
  • 6 to 17 months: 60%
  • 90 days to 5 months: 50%

If your Statement shows 80%, multiply the published full-benefit rates by 0.80 to see what you’ll actually receive. The monthly housing allowance scales the same way, which matters when you’re budgeting for school.

Understanding Your Certificate of Eligibility

Checking by Phone

Call the VA education benefits line at 888-442-4551 (TTY: 711), Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Eastern. From outside the United States, the number is 001-918-781-5678 during the same hours.7Veterans Benefits Administration. Contact Us – Education and Training

Have your Social Security number and service branch details ready for identity verification. Once you’re through, a representative can tell you which program you’re enrolled in, your remaining entitlement, your eligibility percentage, and your expiration date. You can also ask them to mail a hard copy of your Certificate of Eligibility or education decision letter if your school needs one on file.

Telling Post-9/11 Apart From Montgomery

If you elected Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits, that election was irrevocable, and you made it either by completing VA Form 22-1990 or by submitting a written statement relinquishing your Chapter 30 eligibility.8eCFR. 38 CFR Part 21 Subpart P – Post-9/11 GI Bill – Section: 21.9520 Basic Eligibility If you never made that switch, you’re still on the Montgomery GI Bill. Your Statement of Benefits or a call to 888-442-4551 will confirm which one you’re on.

The maximum entitlement under either program is 36 months. Veterans with two or more qualifying periods of active duty may be eligible for up to 48 months of combined benefits across programs.9Veterans Affairs. Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33)

When Your Benefits Expire

Expiration rules differ sharply by program and separation date, and getting this wrong can cost you unused months.

Post-9/11 GI Bill

If you separated from active duty on or after January 1, 2013, your Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits never expire. The Forever GI Bill (formally the Harry W. Colmery Veterans Educational Assistance Act) eliminated the old 15-year time limit for this group. If your service ended before January 1, 2013, the 15-year clock still applies, and unused benefits disappear after that deadline.9Veterans Affairs. Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33)

Montgomery GI Bill

Montgomery GI Bill benefits expire 10 years after you separate from the military. That deadline is firmer than many veterans expect. You may qualify for an extension if you served a later period of 90 or more consecutive days on active duty, had an illness or disability that prevented you from attending school, or were held by a foreign government after your last discharge.10Veterans Affairs. Getting a GI Bill Extension Outside those exceptions, expired Montgomery entitlement can’t be recovered.

If You’re a Dependent on Transferred Benefits

The online Statement of Benefits tool isn’t available to dependents. Only the veteran who earned the entitlement can view it through VA.gov.3Veterans Affairs. Check Your Remaining Post-9/11 GI Bill Benefits If you’re using transferred benefits and need to see what’s left, request a copy of your education decision letter through Ask VA online or by calling 888-442-4551. Dependents also have to file VA Form 22-1990E before they can use transferred benefits at all.

If Your Records Look Wrong

If your Statement shows incorrect service dates, the wrong eligibility percentage, or a balance that doesn’t match your records, call 888-442-4551 first. Many discrepancies are data-entry problems a representative can flag for correction.

If the error comes from an actual VA decision you disagree with, you have three formal review paths: a Supplemental Claim (VA Form 20-0995) if you have new evidence such as a corrected DD-214, a Higher-Level Review by a senior reviewer of the same evidence, or a Board Appeal before a Veterans Law Judge at the Board of Veterans’ Appeals.11Veterans Affairs. VA Decision Reviews and Appeals An accredited attorney, claims agent, or Veterans Service Organization representative can help with any of them. The general VA benefits hotline at 800-827-1000 can point you to a local VSO office.
