To check USCIS case status, take the 13-character receipt number from your Form I-797 Notice of Action and enter it in the Case Status Online tool at uscis.gov, or sign in to a USCIS online account for a fuller history. If your case has passed its posted processing time, there is a defined escalation ladder you can walk before things like a congressional inquiry or federal lawsuit come into play.
Find Your Receipt Number First
Almost every status-check method starts with the receipt number: three letters followed by ten digits. The prefix identifies the office or system that received your case, and common ones include EAC, WAC, LIN, SRC, NBC, MSC, and IOE.1U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Receipt Number It appears on any Notice of Action USCIS has mailed you, and on the home screen of your USCIS online account if you filed online.
If you cannot find the number, your bank records showing a cashed filing-fee check can help USCIS locate the case. Call the USCIS Contact Center at 800-375-5283 with your full legal name, date of birth, and the type of application you filed, and a representative can look it up.2U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Case Status Online for a Quick Look
The Case Status Online tool on the USCIS website is the fastest option. Enter your receipt number and it returns the last action taken on your case, such as “Case Was Received,” “Request for Evidence Was Sent,” or “Case Was Approved.”3U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Checking Your Case Status Online You do not need an account.
The trade-off is that you see only the most recent update. If several things have happened on your case and you want the sequence, use an online account instead.

Calling the Contact Center
The USCIS Contact Center at 800-375-5283 (TTY 800-767-1833) runs a speech-enabled system 24 hours a day, with live agents Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern.2U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. USCIS Contact Center The system asks you to describe your question in English or Spanish rather than routing you through a numbered menu. Be specific; vague requests get looped back to automated answers. If your issue can be handled through an online self-service tool, the system will point you there instead of connecting a live agent.
Live support handles missing notices, expedite requests, rescheduling biometrics or interviews, and correcting typographical errors made by USCIS.2U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. USCIS Contact Center The agent generally sees the same case-status information you can see in your online account, so calling is most useful when you need someone to take an action, not just read a screen.
What Emma Can and Can’t Do
The chatbot at the “Need Help? Chat with Emma” link on most USCIS pages answers general questions in English or Spanish and can walk you to the right form or self-service tool.5U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. In-Person Appointments at a Field Office
For issues phone and online tools cannot resolve, you can ask for an in-person appointment at a USCIS field office. The old InfoPass system is gone; USCIS now offers an online appointment request form, and you can also request an appointment by calling 800-375-5283.6U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. USCIS Launches Online Appointment Request Form Slots are limited, so request early and bring everything relevant: your receipt notice, all Notices of Action, identification, and any evidence you want to present. In-person meetings are most useful for clarifying a confusing notice, addressing a case that appears stuck, or discussing a Request for Evidence.
Emergency Travel
If you have a pending travel-document application and a critical need to leave the United States within 15 days, you may qualify for emergency processing at a field office. Qualifying reasons include urgent medical treatment abroad, the death or serious illness of a family member, or a timely-filed application with a pending expedite request as your departure approaches.7U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Emergency Travel
Call the Contact Center or use the online appointment request tool to start. If USCIS schedules an emergency appointment, bring a completed and signed Form I-131 with any applicable filing fee (even if you already have one pending), evidence of the travel emergency, proof of eligibility for the travel document, two passport-style photos, and certified English translations of any foreign-language documents.7U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Compare Your Wait to Posted Processing Times
USCIS publishes estimated processing times for every form, broken down by the office handling the case. On the processing times page, select your form, form category, and the field office or service center listed on your receipt notice.8U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Processing Times – Case Status Online
The posted number is the time USCIS took to complete 80% of adjudicated cases over the most recent six-month period, so roughly one in five cases runs longer than the posted time even under normal conditions.9U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. More Information About Case Processing Times A Request for Evidence pauses your timeline until you respond.
The Case Inquiry Date
Each form-and-office combination also has a case inquiry date, the point at which USCIS treats your case as potentially outside normal processing. It uses a stricter threshold: the time to complete 93% of cases, minus how long your case has already been pending. If that produces a date in the past, you are eligible to submit a case inquiry.9U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. More Information About Case Processing Times
When Your Case Is Past the Inquiry Date
Once you are past the inquiry date, work through the escalation options in order. Each later step assumes the earlier ones have been tried.
Submit a Case Inquiry Through e-Request
Start with the USCIS e-Request tool. Under the Case Inquiry section, choose the option for a case taking longer than expected. This formally flags your case as outside normal processing.10U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. e-Request – Self Service Tools The same tool handles missing notices, cards, or documents that never arrived.
Request Expedited Processing
USCIS may expedite a case if you can document a qualifying circumstance. Categories include severe financial loss to a company (such as one at risk of failing or losing a critical contract) or to an individual facing job loss, though a general need for work authorization alone does not qualify; humanitarian emergencies such as serious illness, disability, family death, or extreme conditions from a natural disaster or armed conflict; nonprofit cultural or social interests, tied to the specific beneficiary’s role rather than the organization’s mission at large; government interests involving public safety or national security, submitted by an authorized government official; and clear USCIS errors that need urgent correction. USCIS has sole discretion over whether to grant a request.11U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Expedite Requests
Contact Your Member of Congress
Your U.S. Senator or Representative’s office can submit a congressional inquiry to USCIS on your behalf. USCIS generally accepts these only when a case has passed the posted processing timeframe and reached its inquiry date. Contact the casework office of your elected official with your receipt number and a description of the issue. A congressional inquiry does not guarantee faster action, but it often gets a human at USCIS to look at your file.
The CIS Ombudsman
The Office of the Citizenship and Immigration Services Ombudsman, part of the Department of Homeland Security, is set up as an office of last resort. Before it will get involved, you must have contacted USCIS through its customer service tools within the last 90 days and given the agency at least 60 days to respond. Where the only issue is processing delay and no expedite was approved, the Ombudsman can help only after your case inquiry date has passed.12Department of Homeland Security. Types of Cases the CIS Ombudsman Can and Cannot Help With
There are exceptions. If your case involves a form with a statutory processing deadline (such as Form N-400 for naturalization or certain Form I-360 and I-129 categories), or if USCIS approved your expedite request more than 60 days ago without acting, the Ombudsman may step in before the inquiry date passes.12Department of Homeland Security. Federal Lawsuit as a Last Resort
Applicants can sue in federal court under the Administrative Procedure Act, which authorizes courts to compel agency action unlawfully withheld or unreasonably delayed. Courts weigh factors including whether the agency’s timeline follows a rule of reason, whether Congress imposed a deadline, whether the delay affects human welfare, whether prioritizing one applicant would disadvantage others, and the harm the applicant has suffered. It is expensive, slow, and uncertain, but for cases stalled for years without explanation it may be the only remaining option. An immigration attorney can help you assess whether the facts justify the cost.
Keep Your Address Current
USCIS sends interview notices, evidence requests, approval letters, and denials to the address on file. Miss a time-sensitive notice because you moved, and USCIS will not resend it.
Federal law requires most noncitizens in the United States to report an address change to USCIS in writing within ten days of moving.13Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 8 USC 1305 – Notices of Change of Address Failing to do so is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $200 and up to 30 days in jail, and can be grounds for removal unless you can show the failure was reasonably excusable or not willful.14Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 8 USC 1306 – Penalties
The easiest route is the Enterprise Change of Address tool under the “My Account” menu in your USCIS online account. Enter the receipt number for each pending case so the change applies to all of them. Updating your address through the online account satisfies the legal reporting requirement.15U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. How to Change Your Address
