To check if you received a tax rebate, log into your IRS Online Account and look under Tax Records, where the totals of any Economic Impact Payments issued to you are listed. That’s the current federal method, since the old “Get My Payment” tool has been retired.1Internal Revenue Service. Economic Impact Payments If what you’re waiting on is a regular refund from a return you just filed, use the IRS “Where’s My Refund” tool instead. State rebates are separate and have to be checked through the state that issued them.
Check Past Federal Rebates in Your IRS Online Account
The three rounds of federal Economic Impact Payments sent in 2020 and 2021 show up in your IRS Online Account under Tax Records. The account displays the total amount issued to you for each round, which is what you compare against your bank records or memory of what actually arrived.
If you filed jointly, don’t assume one login covers both spouses. The IRS splits the payment record between the two filers, so each spouse has to log into their own separate account to see their half of the total.1Internal Revenue Service. Economic Impact Payments
Setting Up the Account
Creating an account runs through ID.me. You’ll need a personal email, a government-issued photo ID such as a driver’s license or passport, and your Social Security number or ITIN. Multifactor authentication is required, whether that’s an authenticator app or face and touch unlock on your phone.2Internal Revenue Service. Creating an Account for IRS.gov The identity check is where people get stuck, especially after a name or address change. If the automated verification fails, ID.me offers a video call with a human agent as a fallback.
If You Can’t Set Up an Online Account
Request a tax transcript instead. Call 1-800-908-9946, or mail Form 4506-T, and the records go to your address on file. A Tax Account Transcript shows payment activity, which is what you want if you’re checking for a rebate. Mailed transcript requests usually take about 10 business days.3Internal Revenue Service. Request for Transcript of Tax Return Transcripts can also be viewed and downloaded instantly from within the Online Account.4Internal Revenue Service. Get Your Tax Records and Transcripts
The Backup Claim Window Has Closed
People who missed a stimulus payment used to be able to claim the money as a Recovery Rebate Credit on the corresponding tax return, the 2020 return for the first two payments and the 2021 return for the third.1Internal Revenue Service. Economic Impact Payments Both windows are now closed. Federal law gives you three years from the original filing deadline to claim a credit or refund, and the last of those deadlines, for 2021 returns, passed on April 15, 2025.5Internal Revenue Service. Time You Can Claim a Credit or Refund If your Online Account shows no payment for a round and you never filed to claim the credit in time, that money isn’t recoverable now. There is also no new federal rebate program of that scale in 2026, so a search that turns up nothing usually just means nothing was owed to you.
Track a Pending Refund with Where’s My Refund
If you’re checking on a refund from a return you filed recently rather than a past stimulus payment, use “Where’s My Refund” on IRS.gov or in the IRS2Go mobile app.6Internal Revenue Service. Check the Status of a Refund in Just a Few Clicks Using the Wheres My Refund Tool
Three pieces of information have to match your return exactly:
- Social Security number or ITIN of the primary taxpayer on the return.
- Filing status, whether Single, Married Filing Jointly, Head of Household, or another category, as chosen on the return.
- Exact whole-dollar refund amount. Don’t round.
The tool moves through three stages: Return Received, Refund Approved, and Refund Sent.6Internal Revenue Service. Check the Status of a Refund in Just a Few Clicks Using the Wheres My Refund Tool Return Received means the filing is in the queue. Refund Approved means the amount has been confirmed. Refund Sent means it’s on its way to your bank or mailbox.
The IRS says to expect an e-filed refund within about three weeks. Paper returns take six weeks or more from the date the IRS receives them.7Internal Revenue Service. Refunds Returns claiming certain credits or flagged by fraud filters take longer. The tool won’t return a useful status until at least 24 hours after e-filing, or four weeks after mailing.
If Records Say a Payment Was Sent but You Didn’t Get It
When the IRS shows a payment issued and nothing shows up on your end, you can ask for a payment trace by filing Form 3911, Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund. You’ll list your name, Social Security number, the tax year, and the exact refund amount. On a joint return, both spouses have to sign.8Internal Revenue Service. About Form 3911, Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund
Wait long enough before filing. The IRS asks for at least five days after the direct deposit date shown in the tracker, or at least four weeks after a check was mailed. A trace filed too early just gets pushed back in line.
Rejected Direct Deposits in 2026
Starting in 2026, the IRS handles rejected direct deposits differently. If your bank rejects the deposit, the payment is frozen instead of automatically reissued as a paper check. You’ll get a CP53E notice, and you have 30 days to log into your IRS Online Account and update your banking information.9Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your CP53E Notice Miss that window and a paper check eventually goes out, but that takes about six weeks.10Taxpayer Advocate Service. Direct Deposit Changes for 2026 Could Affect How and When You Get Your Refund The CP53E notice is sent only once. If a second direct deposit fails, you don’t get another chance to fix the account online; you wait for a mailed check.
Checking a State Rebate
State rebate programs are separate from anything federal. They have their own eligibility rules, amounts, and timelines, funded by state budget surpluses or specific relief legislation, and the only place to check status is your state’s Department of Revenue or equivalent tax authority.
Most state portals mirror the federal tool: Social Security number, filing status, and the expected refund or rebate amount. Some also ask for your federal AGI as reported on the state return. Processing times swing widely between states, from a few weeks to several months, and the state cycle has nothing to do with when a federal refund lands.
If your state’s portal says the payment was processed or mailed but you haven’t seen it, check your bank statements for a deposit from the state revenue department; the description isn’t always obvious. For paper checks, give postal delivery time before calling.
A Note on Scams While You’re Checking
Money moving out of the government pulls scammers in. The IRS does not make first contact by email, text, or social media. The first notice about any tax matter arrives as a letter in the mail. A caller demanding immediate payment or threatening arrest is a scammer. The IRS will never ask for payment by gift card, prepaid debit card, or cryptocurrency, and largely does not do unannounced in-person visits.11Internal Revenue Service. Ways to Tell if the IRS Is Reaching Out or if Its a Scammer When a notice arrives and you aren’t sure, verify it by logging into your IRS Online Account or calling the number printed on the notice itself.
