To check if USCIS received your application, go to Case Status Online at egov.uscis.gov and enter the 13-character receipt number from your Form I-797C, Notice of Action. If the paper notice hasn’t arrived yet, that same number often appears earlier on the back of your cashed filing-fee check or in a G-1145 text or email confirmation. Most applicants see the paper notice within two to four weeks of filing.
Find Your Receipt Number First
Everything starts with the receipt number. USCIS assigns one to every application it accepts: three letters followed by ten digits, with the letters (EAC, WAC, LIN, SRC, NBC, MSC, or IOE) indicating which service center or system is handling your case.1U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Receipt Number
You’ll usually find it in one of these places:
- Form I-797C, Notice of Action, mailed after USCIS accepts your filing.
- The back of your cashed filing-fee check. USCIS stamps the receipt number there, and it often shows up weeks before the paper notice.
- Your credit card transaction details, if you paid that way.
- The G-1145 text or email, if you attached Form G-1145 to your paper filing. USCIS sends that electronic notification within 24 hours of accepting the application, and it contains the receipt number and a status link (no personal information).2U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Form G-1145, e-Notification of Application/Petition Acceptance
If you file on paper again in the future, attach Form G-1145. It’s free, takes about thirty seconds, and cuts the worst of the early waiting period.
Check Case Status Online
Once you have the number, go to egov.uscis.gov and enter all 13 characters without dashes but including any asterisks printed on your notice.3U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Case Status Online – Case Status Search The page shows the most recent action on your case, which at minimum confirms USCIS received and accepted the filing.
A free USCIS online account gives you more. Your dashboard shows a digital history of submitted forms, receipt notices, and any requests USCIS has sent you. To create one, you need an email address and a password of at least eight characters with an uppercase letter, a lowercase letter, and a special character. You’ll also set up two-step verification by text or email.4U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. How to Create a USCIS Online Account Even if you filed on paper, linking your receipt number to an online account gives you digital copies of notices that may still be in the mail.
How Long the Receipt Notice Should Take
USCIS says the paper receipt notice (Form I-797C) should arrive within 10 days after your application is accepted at a Lockbox facility.2U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Form G-1145, e-Notification of Application/Petition Acceptance Three to four weeks is more realistic, and during busy periods it can take longer. USCIS’s own e-Request system won’t accept a non-delivery inquiry until at least 60 days after filing a new application.5U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. e-Request – Non-Delivery of Notice
You can also sign up for USPS Informed Delivery to see daily email images of mail coming to your address. It won’t give you a tracking number for standard USCIS notices, but it will show you when the envelope is on its way.6U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. How to Track Delivery of Your Notice or Secure Identity Document (or Card)
When your notice does arrive, check the “received date” printed on it. That date is when USCIS physically got your package and becomes your official filing date.
If Nothing Has Arrived
If more than 30 business days have passed since your courier (USPS, FedEx, UPS, or DHL) confirmed delivery to a USCIS Lockbox and you still have no receipt notice or evidence that your fee was processed, email lockboxsupport@uscis.dhs.gov.7Department of Homeland Security. Tip Sheet – When to Contact a USCIS Lockbox Business days, not calendar days: that’s roughly six weeks in real time.
Include the following in your email:
- The form number you submitted (N-400, I-130, I-485, and so on).
- The receipt number, if you have one from a G-1145 notification or a cashed check.
- The applicant’s name, and the beneficiary’s name if applicable.
- The mailing address on the application.
- Delivery tracking information from your courier.
- Payment details: whether you paid by check, money order, or credit card, and whether the payment has been processed.
Do not put your Social Security number or A-Number in the email.7Department of Homeland Security. Tip Sheet – When to Contact a USCIS Lockbox
If you already have a receipt number (from a G-1145 notification or a cashed check) but never got the paper notice, use the online e-Request tool for non-delivery of notices at egov.uscis.gov/e-request/ndn. It asks for your receipt number, A-Number (if applicable), filing date, and form type, and auto-populates some fields from the receipt number.5U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. e-Request – Non-Delivery of Notice With no receipt number at all, the Lockbox email is the better path.
Consider That It May Have Been Rejected
A missing receipt notice isn’t always a mail problem. Sometimes USCIS rejected the filing outright, meaning it never entered the system. A rejected application gets no receipt number, doesn’t preserve your original filing date, and can’t be appealed.8U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Chapter 6 – Submitting Requests That’s a different thing from a denial, which comes after the case has been accepted and reviewed on the merits.
Most Lockbox-stage rejections are administrative: no filing fee, the wrong fee amount, or an unsigned form.9U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Chapter 4 – Fee Waivers and Fee Exemptions If you paid by credit card and the charge was declined, USCIS won’t retry it and may reject the whole package.10U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Pay With a Credit Card by Mail
When USCIS rejects an application, it returns the package with a rejection notice explaining why. Fixing the deficiency and refiling is usually straightforward, but the clock resets: your filing date becomes whenever USCIS receives the corrected package. So if you mailed your application weeks ago and have heard nothing, check whether the payment cleared. A check that was never cashed or a credit card that was never charged is a strong signal that USCIS either hasn’t opened your package yet or rejected it.
Escalating to the CIS Ombudsman
If Lockbox support doesn’t resolve the missing-notice problem, the Office of the CIS Ombudsman at DHS handles cases involving undelivered USCIS notices and decisions. Before filing, you must have contacted USCIS within the last 90 days and given the agency at least 60 days to try to fix the problem.11Homeland Security. How to Submit a Case Assistance Request You then submit DHS Form 7001 (Request for Case Assistance) online. Treat this as a last resort, after the Lockbox email and e-Request tool.
