How to Check Credit Score Without Social Security Number

You can check your credit without a Social Security Number by requesting your reports directly from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion using an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN), submitted by mail or phone along with copies of your identity documents. The online portal at AnnualCreditReport.com only accepts SSNs, so the manual process is the route that works.1Annual Credit Report. Frequently Asked Questions – General Questions Federal law gives every consumer one free report per year from each of the three nationwide bureaus, and that right doesn’t depend on immigration status or on the type of taxpayer number you hold.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 U.S. Code 1681j – Charges for Certain Disclosures

What You’re Actually Checking: Report vs. Score

Your free annual disclosure is the credit report, which is the record of your accounts, payment history, balances, collections, and public records. The credit score is a three-digit number calculated from that report, and bureaus and scoring companies generally charge for it. Many banks and card issuers show your score for free inside their app or on monthly statements, so if you already have an account somewhere, check there before paying for one.

If no file exists yet under your name, there’s no score to calculate. That’s why the report comes first: it tells you whether a file exists at all, and whether what’s in it is accurate.

Using an ITIN in Place of an SSN

The IRS issues an ITIN to people who need a U.S. taxpayer identification number for federal tax purposes but aren’t eligible for a Social Security Number.3Internal Revenue Service. Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) It’s a nine-digit number formatted like an SSN. Its original job is tax filing, but it has become the standard identifier for building and monitoring credit without an SSN.

The bureaus don’t actually use the ITIN as a unique lookup key the way they use SSNs. They match records to you using your full name, date of birth, address history, and account details. When a lender reports your activity and includes your ITIN, the bureau creates or updates a file from that combined information. A credit file under your name can exist even though the ITIN itself isn’t treated like a traditional SSN identifier inside the bureau’s system.

The practical catch: AnnualCreditReport.com’s web form rejects anything that isn’t an SSN. Entering an ITIN there won’t work. You need the mail-in form or the phone line at (877) 322-8228 instead.1Annual Credit Report. Frequently Asked Questions – General Questions

Documents to Gather Before You Request

Federal regulations let bureaus verify identity through government-issued documents, utility bills, and similar authentication.4Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. 12 CFR Part 1022 (Regulation V) – 1022.123 Appropriate Proof of Identity Pull together:

  • A government-issued photo ID, such as a foreign passport, consular identification card, or other official photo ID.
  • Proof of your current address dated within the last 60 days, such as a lease, utility bill, or bank statement.
  • Your IRS CP565 or CP567 notice, which confirms your ITIN assignment or renewal and ties your request to the right taxpayer number.

If any document is in a language other than English, include a certified English translation signed by the translator with a statement confirming fluency and accuracy.

On the Annual Credit Report Request Form itself, write your ITIN in the Social Security Number field. There is no separate ITIN box. Attaching a short note explaining you’re using an ITIN can help your request get past an automated screen.

Submitting the Request

There are two routes.

By mail: download the Annual Credit Report Request Form, complete it with your ITIN, and send it with copies of your identity documents to:5Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. How Do I Get a Free Copy of My Credit Reports?

Use certified mail with return receipt requested. You’ll get a tracking number and delivery confirmation, which matters when you’re mailing copies of sensitive identity documents. Certified mail runs roughly $8 to $15 depending on packet weight.

By phone: call (877) 322-8228 and follow the prompts to provide your identifying information verbally. This can be faster, though the bureau may still ask for supporting documents before releasing the report.

You can also write to each bureau directly if you need a report outside the annual free disclosure:7Equifax. How Do I Correct or Dispute Inaccuracies on My Credit Reports by Mail?

Once a bureau has your request, it has 15 days under federal law to send your report.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 U.S. Code 1681j – Charges for Certain Disclosures If it needs more documentation to confirm your identity, the clock restarts when you supply it. If nothing comes up under your name, the bureau will tell you no file has been established yet.

If No File Comes Back

A “no file” response is common for people who have been using an ITIN for a short time or who haven’t held credit accounts that report to the bureaus. To start a file, you need accounts from lenders that report to at least one of the three major bureaus. Payments that aren’t reported don’t help.

Secured credit cards are the usual entry point. You put down a cash deposit, often starting around $200, and the card works like a regular one. Some unsecured cards and credit-builder loans are also open to ITIN applicants. Before applying for any product, ask the issuer directly: do you report to all three credit bureaus? If the answer is no, your on-time payments may not build the file you came to check.

When a lender reports an ITIN account to the bureaus, the standard practice is to leave the SSN field blank or fill it with zeros rather than inserting the ITIN. The bureau matches the account to you by name, address, and other identifiers. The process works, but matching is less automatic than with an SSN, so building a file this way can take longer.

One tool worth ruling out: Experian Boost, which adds utility and streaming payments to an Experian file, currently requires an SSN to sign up and isn’t available to ITIN-only consumers. Advice that recommends Boost as a shortcut for people without an SSN is wrong.

Avoid Credit Privacy Number Scams

If anyone offers to sell you a “Credit Privacy Number” or “CPN” to use in place of an SSN, don’t. These numbers are typically stolen Social Security Numbers taken from children, elderly people, or incarcerated individuals. Using one on a credit application is federal identity fraud under 18 U.S.C. ยง 1028, with penalties up to 15 years in prison when the fraud involves obtaining $1,000 or more in value.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 18 U.S. Code 1028 – Fraud and Related Activity in Connection With Identification Documents

CPN sellers often target immigrants and others without SSNs, pitching a fresh credit file or a faster approval path. No legitimate lender recognizes CPNs. Using one can result in criminal prosecution and a permanent ban from the lender. Legitimate credit repair companies also cannot charge upfront fees before doing any work, and cannot ask you to misrepresent your identity on applications.9Federal Trade Commission. Keep Your ITIN Active

An ITIN that doesn’t appear on a federal tax return for three consecutive years expires on December 31 of that third year.10Internal Revenue Service. How to Renew an ITIN An expired ITIN doesn’t erase an existing credit file, but it makes requesting reports and applying for new credit harder. If yours has lapsed, renew it by filing Form W-7 with the IRS. Renewal processing takes several weeks, so check your ITIN’s status before you need your report urgently rather than after.
