Start with the Social Security Administration
Your new legal name has to be on file with the SSA before anything else. To change it, complete Form SS-5 (Application for a Social Security Card). You’ll need an original or certified document showing both your old and new names — a marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order for a legal name change — plus proof of identity such as a U.S. driver’s license or passport. You don’t have to wait for the physical card before moving on. Once the SSA has processed the change in their system, the Department of Education can verify your new name electronically. Keep the new card in a safe place when it does arrive; your school’s financial aid office may ask to see it.
Update Your Name on StudentAid.gov
After the SSA processes the change, update the name tied to your StudentAid.gov account (the account formerly known as your FSA ID). - Go to Settings, then Personal Information.
- Update your name and save.
Your SSA verification status will show as Pending while the system re-checks your information. That re-verification usually takes about one business day.1Federal Student Aid. Correct a FAFSA You Already Submitted
Once your StudentAid.gov account reflects your new name and SSA verification is complete, you can fix a FAFSA that’s already in. Review the whole form before resubmitting, not just the name fields. Match Your Social Security Card Character for Character
SSA verification is not a loose comparison. It checks your first name, middle name, last name, suffix, Social Security number, and date of birth. Common traps:
- Middle names versus initials. If your card shows a full middle name, entering just the initial can flag the record.
- Hyphens and spaces. Smith-Jones and Smith Jones are not the same to the matching system.
- Suffixes. If the SSA has Jr. or III on your record, leaving it off the FAFSA creates a discrepancy.
- Nicknames. Mike will not match if the SSA has Michael.

A contributor whose name doesn’t match SSA records will have their portion of the FAFSA rejected even if the student’s own information is clean. A parent who changed their name years ago without updating the SSA, or who kept an old FSA ID under a maiden name, can block the entire application. What a Name Mismatch Does to Your Aid
A mismatch affects your money, not just your paperwork. When the system can’t confirm your identity, your application receives a flag and a comment code, and your school’s financial aid office has to resolve it before releasing federal aid. In practice, disbursement gets held. Some offices will release aid if they can independently confirm your identity (a nickname causing the mismatch, for example), but many will wait for a corrected application before sending any money. During a semester when tuition is due, that delay can cascade into late fees, dropped enrollment, or lost housing.
Give Yourself Two to Three Weeks
Because the process crosses the SSA, StudentAid.gov, and the FAFSA itself, expect two to three weeks end to end. When the Online Path Fails
Sometimes verification still fails after you’ve updated both the SSA and StudentAid.gov. SSA records can take longer than expected to propagate, a data entry error at the SSA can linger, or the change may involve circumstances the automated system can’t reconcile.
If you’re stuck, the Department of Education may ask you to verify your identity through documentation. The Attestation and Validation of Identity form requires either one document from Group A or two documents from Group B:
