To change your name after marriage, order certified copies of your marriage certificate, update your Social Security record first, then your driver’s license, then your passport, and finally your financial, tax, insurance, and voter records. The order matters because nearly every agency verifies your name against Social Security, so an out-of-sequence update tends to bounce back. Done in the right sequence, the whole process usually takes a few weeks.
Order Certified Copies of Your Marriage Certificate
The souvenir copy your officiant hands you after the ceremony is not a legal document. Government agencies need certified copies printed on official state security paper with a raised seal, ordered from the vital records office in the state where you were married.1USAGov. How to Get a Certified Copy of a Marriage Certificate Fees generally run $15 to $35 per copy.
Order at least three or four. You will surrender originals to Social Security and to the State Department, sometimes at overlapping times, and extras keep the process moving so you are not waiting on one agency to return a certificate before the next can start.
Update Social Security First
Every later step checks your name against Social Security records, so this one comes before anything else. Bring three documents: your certified marriage certificate, proof of identity (a driver’s license, state ID, or passport), and proof of U.S. citizenship (a birth certificate, passport, or naturalization certificate).2Social Security Administration. US Citizen – Adult Name Change on Social Security Card Everything must be an original or a copy certified by the issuing agency. Photocopies and notarized copies are not accepted.
How to Apply
In some states, you can submit the name change through your personal my Social Security account online. Otherwise, start the application online and then visit a local office to show your documents, or fill out Form SS-5 and bring it to your nearest Social Security office or Card Center. Most visits require an appointment.3Social Security Administration. How Do I Change or Correct My Name on My Social Security Number Card You can also mail Form SS-5 with your original documents, though many people prefer an in-person visit rather than sending irreplaceable paperwork.
Your Social Security number stays the same for life; only the name on the card changes. The SSA typically mails the new card within seven to ten business days after processing.4Social Security Administration. How Long Will It Take to Get a Social Security Card Name changes do not count against the usual limit of three replacement cards a year or ten in a lifetime.5eCFR. 20 CFR 422.103 – Social Security Number Cards
Update Your Driver’s License
Wait until Social Security has processed the change before going to your state’s motor vehicle office. Most states require you to update your license within 30 days of a legal name change. Bring your certified marriage certificate, your current license, and your new Social Security card or proof that the change was submitted. Fees for a corrected license generally range from about $11 to $37.
If your current license does not meet REAL ID standards, use this visit to upgrade. Starting in 2025, you need a REAL ID-compliant license or another accepted ID for domestic flights and access to certain federal buildings. Ask about updating your vehicle title and registration at the same time; many states let you handle all of it in one visit.
Update Your Passport
Which passport form you use depends on when your current passport was issued relative to your wedding.
- Married less than one year after your passport was issued: use Form DS-5504, mailed with your current passport, a certified marriage certificate, and one passport photo. There is no fee unless you request expedited processing.6U.S. Department of State. Name Change for US Passport or Correct a Printing or Data Error
- Married more than one year after your passport was issued: use Form DS-82 to renew by mail if your passport was issued when you were 16 or older and within the last 15 years. Include your current passport, the marriage certificate, a passport photo, and the renewal fee.6U.S. Department of State. Name Change for US Passport or Correct a Printing or Data Error
- Cannot renew by mail: if your passport does not meet the DS-82 criteria, apply in person using Form DS-11 at an acceptance facility.
The State Department requires a certified marriage certificate as proof of a name change through marriage.7eCFR. 22 CFR 51.25 – Name Change in Passport Use a trackable shipping method. Your cancelled passport and your original marriage certificate come back in separate mailings, so do not panic when only one arrives.
Taxes and Employer Payroll
The name on your tax return must match Social Security’s file. Filing before the SSA processes the change can delay your refund or trigger an IRS letter. This catches people who marry in December and rush to file in January; if that is you, confirm the SSA update is done first.
Give your employer a copy of your new Social Security card so payroll and tax withholding records match. The IRS recommends a new Form W-4 whenever your personal situation changes, and a name change qualifies.8Internal Revenue Service. Form W-4 Employees Withholding Certificate Your W-2 needs the new name to report your wages accurately, so do not leave this until year-end.
Banks, Credit Cards, and Credit Reports
Once your driver’s license is updated, contact your bank, credit card companies, mortgage servicer, student loan provider, and any investment or retirement accounts. Many banks let you update online or through secure messaging; some require a branch visit with your marriage certificate and new ID.
You do not need to contact the credit bureaus directly. Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion receive name information from your creditors, so once your banks and lenders update, the change flows to your credit reports on its own. The bureaus keep your previous name on file as a known alias tied to your Social Security number, so your credit history carries over.
Health Insurance and Benefits
Marriage is a qualifying life event that opens a special enrollment period. You have 60 days from your wedding date to enroll in a new plan, add your spouse to your existing plan, or switch to your spouse’s employer plan.9HealthCare.gov. Getting Health Coverage Outside Open Enrollment The window applies whether or not you change your name; if you are changing it, update the insurer at the same time so your ID cards and claims match.
Update other benefit accounts tied to your identity too: flexible spending accounts, health savings accounts, life insurance policies, and retirement plans like a 401(k) or IRA. Your plan administrator or HR department can walk you through each one, and most require nothing more than a copy of your marriage certificate.
Voter Registration
Update your voter registration before the next election, or you may run into problems at the polls. You can use the National Mail Voter Registration Form from the U.S. Election Assistance Commission, following the state-specific instructions included with it.10U.S. Election Assistance Commission. National Mail Voter Registration Form Many states also allow online updates through the Secretary of State website, which is faster.
Smaller Accounts and Property Records
After the major records are done, work through the accounts that use your legal name: email accounts, subscription services, professional licenses, alumni associations, frequent flyer programs, auto and homeowners insurance, and utility bills. None of these are legally urgent, but a mismatch between your ID and an account can create friction at exactly the wrong moment, like boarding a flight or picking up a prescription.
If you own property, you do not need to rush to update your deed. When you eventually sell, your marriage certificate proves that your maiden name and married name belong to the same person. Filing a new deed under your married name is optional, and the recording fees are not worth it without a specific reason.
