To change your green card address with USCIS, file the change within 10 days of moving using the online Enterprise Change of Address (E-COA) tool in your USCIS account, or mail a paper Form AR-11. Both options are free. The online tool is faster and updates your pending cases immediately once you enter each receipt number.
The 10-Day Deadline
Federal law requires every noncitizen subject to registration to notify USCIS in writing of each address change within 10 days of moving. The clock starts on the date you move, not the date you finish unpacking. Lawful permanent residents, visa holders, and asylum applicants are all covered. If the person who moved is a child under 14, the parent or legal guardian files on their behalf.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 8 USC 1305 – Notices of Change of Address
What You Need Before You Start
Have these details in front of you so you can finish in one sitting:
- Your full legal name as it appears on your immigration documents
- Your date of birth
- Your Alien Registration Number (A-Number), printed on your green card, employment authorization card, or immigrant visa
- Your previous address
- Your new physical address, plus a mailing address if it differs; a P.O. Box works for mail, but you still have to give the physical location where you live
- The receipt number for every pending USCIS application, petition, or request you want updated
Change Your Address Online With E-COA
The Enterprise Change of Address tool inside your USCIS online account is the fastest method. It updates USCIS case management systems almost immediately, with no paper form to mail, no phone call, and no field office visit.2U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. USCIS Launches New Online Change of Address Tool
Log in to your account at uscis.gov, or create one if you don’t have it yet. Open the “My Account” dropdown and select the E-COA option. Enter your new physical address and, if different, your new mailing address. Then enter the receipt number for each pending case, one at a time.
That receipt number step is the part people miss. Changing the address on your profile does not automatically apply to pending applications. USCIS links a new address to a case only when you enter that case’s receipt number in the tool.3U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. How to Change Your Address Skip a receipt number and that case keeps mailing to your old address.
Save the confirmation page or screenshot the confirmation number when you finish. E-COA does not update Freedom of Information Act or Privacy Act requests; those require a separate email to USCIS.
Change Your Address by Mail With Form AR-11
If you can’t or don’t want to use the online tool, download Form AR-11 (Alien’s Change of Address Card) from the USCIS website.4U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. AR-11 Aliens Change of Address Card Fill in every field, sign and date it, make a copy for your records, and mail it to:
U.S. Department of Homeland Security
Citizenship and Immigration Services
Attn: Change of Address
1344 Pleasants Drive
Harrisonburg, VA 228015U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Form AR-11 Aliens Change of Address Card
There is no filing fee. The paper method is slower than E-COA, so if you have any pending cases, mail delays raise the chance USCIS sends important correspondence to your old address before the update processes.6U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. USCIS Policy Manual – Changes of Address USCIS encourages the online tool whenever possible.
Save Proof That You Filed
Keep evidence of every filing. For E-COA, save or screenshot the confirmation page and the confirmation number. For Form AR-11, keep a photocopy of the completed form and send it by certified mail so you have a USPS tracking receipt showing the mailing date. This proof matters later. Naturalization interviews sometimes revisit whether you complied with the address-change requirement, and a confirmation number or certified mail receipt settles the question quickly.
USPS Forwarding Does Not Reach USCIS
Filing a change of address with the U.S. Postal Service does not update your address with USCIS, and USPS will not forward mail that USCIS sends you.3U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. How to Change Your Address These are separate systems that don’t share data. Setting up USPS forwarding is fine for the rest of your mail, but interview notices, requests for evidence, and approval documents from USCIS need the AR-11 or E-COA update to reach your new home.
What Happens If You Don’t Report
Failing to report an address change is a federal misdemeanor. A conviction carries a fine of up to $200, up to 30 days in jail, or both.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 8 USC 1306 – Penalties The bigger risk sits in the same statute. Regardless of whether you’re criminally convicted, failing to report can make you deportable. Federal law lists noncompliance with the address-change requirement as a ground for removal.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 8 USC 1227 – Deportable Aliens The only defense is showing that the failure was reasonably excusable or not willful. USCIS rarely starts removal proceedings over a missed AR-11 alone, but the authority exists and can provide leverage if other problems come up in your case.
The practical harm is more common than the legal one. A stale address on file means USCIS correspondence goes to the wrong place. Miss an interview notice or a request for evidence because it went to your old apartment, and USCIS can deny your pending application. The burden then falls on you to reopen or refile.
Special Procedures for VAWA, T, and U Visa Cases
If you have a pending or approved case under the Violence Against Women Act, T nonimmigrant status (trafficking victims), or U nonimmigrant status (crime victims), USCIS treats your address as confidential and requires special procedures instead of E-COA.9U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Change of Address Procedures for VAWA/T/U Cases and Form I-751 Abuse Waivers The same applies to applicants filing an abuse waiver on Form I-751.
You have three options:
- Call the USCIS Contact Center at 800-375-5283 (TTY 800-767-1833) with your receipt notices and a copy of your pending or approved application on hand.
- Send a secure message through your USCIS online account. USCIS will call you to complete an enhanced identity verification before making the change.
- Mail Form AR-11 or a signed written notice directly to the service center handling your case. USCIS recommends certified or registered mail.
Request the change for each form or application separately. A pending VAWA case and a separate Temporary Protected Status application, for example, each need their own update.9U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Change of Address Procedures for VAWA/T/U Cases and Form I-751 Abuse Waivers
If You’re Also a Financial Sponsor
Signing Form I-864 as an immigrant’s financial sponsor creates a separate obligation. Sponsors report their own address changes on Form I-865 within 30 days of moving, not on Form AR-11.10U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Instructions for Sponsors Notice of Change of Address (Form I-865) Different form, different deadline. Sponsors who are themselves noncitizens have to file both. Missing the sponsor filing carries a civil fine of $250 to $2,000, rising to between $2,000 and $5,000 if the sponsor knew the immigrant had received means-tested public benefits.11Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 8 USC 1183a – Requirements for Sponsors Affidavit of Support
