To change the bank account for your Social Security direct deposit, sign in to your my Social Security account at ssa.gov, call SSA at 1-800-772-1213, or visit a local Social Security office. As of March 2025, SSA processes direct deposit changes within one business day, whether you submit them online or in person.1Social Security Administration. Social Security Strengthens Identity Proofing Requirements The steps are simple. The part that trips people up is getting the numbers right and keeping the old account open long enough to catch any payment still in transit.
What to Have Ready Before You Start
Pull these together first, whether you plan to go online, call, or visit an office:
- Your Social Security number.
- Your new bank’s nine-digit routing number, found at the bottom-left of a check or through your bank’s app.
- Your new account number, and whether it is checking or savings.
- Your current bank’s routing and account numbers, which SSA may ask for to verify your identity.2Social Security Administration. Report Changes to Your Situation While on SSI
A single wrong digit is where most problems start. Do not work from memory, and do not guess. If you do not have a paper check, pull the numbers directly from your bank’s app or website and check them against a recent statement.
Changing It Online
The fastest route is your my Social Security account at ssa.gov. Sign in, open your payment information, enter the new routing and account numbers, confirm the account type, and submit. SSA processes online changes within one business day.1Social Security Administration. Social Security Strengthens Identity Proofing Requirements
Not every benefit type is eligible for online changes. If yours is not, the system will tell you and route you to call or visit an office instead.3Social Security Administration. Update Direct Deposit That is normal, not a sign of a problem with your record.
If you do not already have a my Social Security account, you will need to create one through either Login.gov or ID.me. As of June 2025, those are the only two sign-in options for SSA’s online services.4Social Security Administration. Create an Account Both require you to verify your identity online with a valid email, your Social Security number, and typically a government-issued photo ID. You must be at least 18.
Since March 31, 2025, SSA has required digital identity proofing for all online direct deposit changes, and in-person identity proofing for office visits. The agency also uses Treasury’s Account Verification Service to confirm in real time that the bank account you provided belongs to you.1Social Security Administration. Changing It by Phone or in Person
To change your direct deposit by phone, call SSA at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. local time.6Social Security Administration. Contact Social Security By Phone Have your Social Security number and both sets of banking details in front of you before you dial. The representative will verify your identity and submit the change.
Visiting a local Social Security office is the required path if you cannot verify your identity online. Call the national number to schedule an in-person appointment.1Social Security Administration. Social Security Strengthens Identity Proofing Requirements Bring a government-issued photo ID and your new bank’s routing and account numbers. Ask for a confirmation receipt and hold on to it until your first payment lands in the new account.
After You Submit the Change
Processing takes one business day, but timing relative to your payment cycle matters. If your next payment date is close when you submit the change, that payment may still go to the old account. Keep the old account open with a zero balance until you have confirmed a deposit at the new one.
Closing the old account too early is the most common mistake. When a payment hits a closed account, the bank rejects it and returns the funds to Treasury. SSA then has to reissue the payment, which can add weeks. There is no benefit to rushing to close the old account.
If a Payment Goes to the Wrong Account
If you entered the wrong numbers and the deposit hit a nonexistent account, the receiving bank will usually reject it and return the funds to Treasury within a few business days. Once Treasury notifies SSA, the agency reissues the payment. In a straightforward case you should have the money within about two weeks of the original payment date.
If the number happened to match a real account belonging to someone else, recovery is more complicated and can run two to three weeks or longer. In either situation, call SSA at 1-800-772-1213 as soon as you notice, and call your bank as well. Some banks have dedicated lines for federal payment issues. Keep a written log of every call with dates and names. If the delay is causing genuine hardship, say so; SSA has expedited procedures for hardship cases. If normal channels stall, your congressional representative’s office can often push the resolution along through its federal agency liaison.
If You Do Not Have a Traditional Bank Account
Federal regulations require Social Security payments to be delivered electronically, either into a bank or credit union account or through a Treasury-sponsored account like Direct Express.7eCFR. 31 CFR Part 208 – Management of Federal Agency Disbursements Paper checks are available only in narrow circumstances, such as an inability to manage an account due to a mental impairment or living in an area without electronic banking infrastructure.8eCFR. 31 CFR 208.4 – Waivers
Direct Express is a Treasury-backed prepaid debit Mastercard that functions like a standard debit card, with no credit check and no minimum balance. To enroll, call Treasury’s Electronic Payment Solution Center at 1-800-333-1795 or SSA at 1-800-772-1213.9Social Security Administration. What Is the Direct Express Card and How Do I Sign Up
Online Banks and Fintech Apps
You can receive Social Security into an online-only bank or fintech app, but the underlying account has to meet federal rules. It must sit at an institution insured by the FDIC or the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund. Virtual wallet accounts qualify only when they carry FDIC insurance through a partner bank.10Social Security Administration. Acceptable Types of Financial Institutions and Accounts
Prepaid card accounts from fintech providers are acceptable if the account is at an insured institution, is covered by Regulation E consumer protections, and has no attached line of credit that automatically repays from the card balance. Accounts tied to check cashers, payday lenders, or gift-card-style prepaid cards do not qualify.10Social Security Administration. Acceptable Types of Financial Institutions and Accounts If you are not sure your account meets the rules, ask the provider about FDIC insurance status and the correct routing number before you submit the change.
Representative Payees
If you receive benefits on behalf of someone else as a representative payee, you can update direct deposit through the my Social Security portal, have the financial institution send the new information to SSA electronically, or call 1-800-772-1213.11Social Security Administration. If You Live Outside the United States
Beneficiaries abroad can use International Direct Deposit in most countries. SSA maintains country-specific versions of Form SSA-1199; you download the form for your country, complete your section, have your foreign bank complete its section, and mail it to the Federal Benefits Unit listed on the form.14Social Security Administration. The participating country list is broad; countries whose infrastructure does not support electronic transfers are excluded, and Treasury may issue paper checks in those cases.15Social Security Administration. Watch Out for Direct Deposit Scams
Bank account changes are one of the main ways scammers try to steal Social Security payments. If someone calls you out of the blue and asks you to change your direct deposit, treat it as a scam. Real SSA staff will not offer to move your money to a “protected” account, will not pressure you to act immediately, and will never ask for payment in gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency.16Social Security Administration. Protect Yourself from Scams
SSA does call people for legitimate reasons, but those calls almost always follow something you started, such as a recent application or a requested callback. When there is a real problem with your account, the agency usually sends a letter first. Anyone threatening arrest, demanding secrecy, or pressuring you to share personal details is not from Social Security.16Social Security Administration. Protect Yourself from Scams When in doubt, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 yourself. Never dial back a number someone gave you in a suspicious message.
