To cancel marriage allowance, sign in to your GOV.UK account and use the marriage allowance service, or call HMRC on 0300 200 3300. The person who originally made the claim has to be the one to cancel it, unless the relationship has ended — in that case either partner can do it.1GOV.UK. Marriage Allowance – If Your Circumstances Change When the change takes effect depends on why you’re cancelling, which matters because a backdated cancellation can leave one of you owing tax.
Reasons You May Need to Cancel
Marriage allowance only works while the transferring partner earns under the £12,570 personal allowance and the receiving partner pays tax at the basic rate.2GOV.UK. Income Tax Rates and Personal Allowances If the lower earner’s income rises above £12,570, there is no unused allowance to transfer. If the higher earner crosses £50,270, they move into the higher rate band and stop qualifying as a recipient.3GOV.UK. Marriage Allowance The statute limits the tax reduction to people paying only the basic rate, the dividend basic rate, the savings basic rate, or the default basic rate.4Legislation.gov.uk. Income Tax Act 2007 – Section 55B
You must also cancel if you divorce, dissolve your civil partnership, or legally separate. Bereavement is handled differently. If your partner transferred allowance to you and then died, you keep the higher personal allowance until 5 April. If you were the one who transferred allowance to a partner who has since died, their estate keeps the higher allowance for the rest of that tax year, and your own allowance reverts to the standard amount.1GOV.UK. Scottish Taxpayers Have a Lower Ceiling
If you live in Scotland, the receiving partner must pay the starter, basic, or intermediate rate. In practice that usually means their income sits between £12,571 and £43,662, rather than the £50,270 limit that applies in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.3GOV.UK. Marriage Allowance A Scottish higher earner who crosses £43,662 loses eligibility even though someone with the same income elsewhere in the UK would still qualify.
When the Cancellation Takes Effect
The reason for cancelling changes the effective date. If you cancel because of an income change, the allowance keeps running until the end of the tax year on 5 April, and the standard allowances resume from 6 April. If the relationship has ended, HMRC may backdate the cancellation to the start of the tax year on 6 April.1GOV.UK. Marriage Allowance – If Your Circumstances Change
Backdating can produce an underpayment for one or both of you, because tax already deducted through payroll was calculated on codes that assumed the transfer was in place. Watch your tax account in the weeks after you cancel so any shortfall doesn’t take you by surprise.
What to Have Ready
Before you start, gather your National Insurance number and your partner’s National Insurance number. Have a recent payslip or P60 nearby so you can confirm current income and check the thresholds. The date of your marriage or civil partnership is used for identity verification. For the online route you will need your Government Gateway sign-in; you can create an account during the process, but setting it up beforehand is quicker.5GOV.UK. Apply for Marriage Allowance Online
Cancelling Online
The fastest route is the GOV.UK marriage allowance service. You’ll prove your identity using information HMRC already holds about you, then confirm the cancellation.1GOV.UK. Marriage Allowance – If Your Circumstances Change
One trap catches Self Assessment filers: you cannot cancel marriage allowance by leaving the relevant section of your return blank. The cancellation has to go through the online service or the phone line separately, whether or not you also file Self Assessment.1GOV.UK. Marriage Allowance – If Your Circumstances Change
Cancelling by Phone or Post
If you’d rather not use the online service, call the Marriage Allowance enquiries line on 0300 200 3300, or +44 135 535 9022 from outside the UK. The line is open Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm.1GOV.UK. You can also use the MATCF form on GOV.UK and post it to Pay As You Earn and Self Assessment, HM Revenue and Customs, BX9 1AS.6HM Revenue and Customs. Marriage Allowance Transfer Paper takes longer to process than the online route, so allow extra time.
What Happens After You Cancel
HMRC issues new tax codes to both of you once the cancellation is processed. While marriage allowance is in place, the transferring partner’s code carries an “N” and the receiving partner’s code carries an “M”.7GOV.UK. Marriage Allowance – How to Apply After cancellation those letters drop off and codes return to the standard format. Your employer or pension provider is notified automatically.
Check your next couple of payslips to confirm the new code has come through. If the old code is still being used, contact HMRC rather than waiting for it to correct itself. And if the cancellation was backdated because a relationship ended, keep an eye out for any tax underpayment that surfaces once the year’s figures are reconciled.
