To cancel your Planet Fitness membership online, log in at planetfitness.com from a web browser, open the account management section, and use the cancellation option there. The mobile app does not support cancellation. Time the request carefully: it must reach your home club by the 10th of the month to stop the next monthly draft, and by the 25th of the month before your annual fee posts to avoid that $49 charge. Members still inside a 12-month commitment also owe a $58 buyout.
Canceling Through the Planet Fitness Website
Open planetfitness.com in a browser and sign in with the credentials you created when you joined. Go to the account management area, where your plan and billing information appear. If a cancellation option is available on your account, follow the prompts and confirm. Save the confirmation number or screenshot the success screen. A confirmation email should arrive within a few days.
A federal rule that took effect in 2025, codified at 16 CFR 425.6, backs up your right to do this. If you signed up online, the cancellation process must be at least as easy as the sign-up, and the gym cannot force you to talk to a live or virtual representative to cancel if you didn’t talk to one to join.1eCFR. 16 CFR 425.6 – Simple Cancellation (“Click to Cancel”)
When the Cancel Button Doesn’t Appear
The online option doesn’t show up for every account. Members in a commitment period, certain account types, and accounts at clubs whose systems haven’t fully updated may not see it. If you originally signed up online, the FTC rule gives you grounds to contact Planet Fitness and demand an online cancellation path.1eCFR. 16 CFR 425.6 – Simple Cancellation (“Click to Cancel”)
The other fallback is a cancellation letter sent by certified mail with return receipt requested to your home club. You can do this without leaving the house through an online certified mail service that prints, mails, and tracks the letter for you. The letter should include your full name as it appears on the account, your membership ID, your home club’s name and address, your contact details, the date, a clear statement that you are canceling, and a request for written confirmation. USPS certified mail costs $5.30, with a return receipt adding $2.82 electronically or $4.40 on paper.2United States Postal Service. Shipping Insurance and Delivery Services Confirm your home club’s street address through the club locator before sending; a letter to the wrong location can push your cancellation past the billing deadline.
The Deadlines That Actually Matter
Planet Fitness bills monthly on the 17th for most members. Billing changes can take up to seven business days to process, so your cancellation needs to reach the club by the 10th of that month to stop the next draft.3Planet Fitness. Customer Service and FAQ Cancel on the 11th and you’ll likely pay for one more month before the membership actually ends.
The $49 annual enhancement fee has a separate deadline. To avoid it, your cancellation must be received by the 25th of the month before the fee posts. The exact month depends on when you joined, so check your billing statement or your account page for the anniversary date. Miss that window and the full $49 hits even if you cancel the next day.
The $58 Buyout for Commitment Memberships
Month-to-month members generally owe nothing extra when they cancel. Members who signed a 12-month commitment and want out before the term ends pay a $58 buyout fee, regardless of how many months are left. Once the 12 months are up and the account rolls over to month-to-month, the buyout no longer applies.
If You Just Signed Up
Most states give new gym members a short window, typically three to five business days, to cancel a fresh contract without penalty. The clock runs from the date you signed the agreement, not the date of your first visit. Inside that window you can cancel for any reason and owe nothing beyond what you’ve already paid. Your state’s health club statute sets the exact number of days, and your contract should state the deadline. After it expires, the standard cancellation rules and any commitment buyout apply.
Don’t Just Cancel Your Card
Blocking the debit, canceling the card, or waiting for the charges to bounce is not a cancellation. The contract keeps running, the balance keeps growing, and Planet Fitness will eventually send the account to a collections agency. Large gym chains typically hand off delinquent accounts to third-party collectors after 60 to 90 days of missed payments.
Once a collector reports the debt to the credit bureaus, it can sit on your credit report for up to seven years from the date of your first missed payment. A collection account can drop a score by 50 to 100 points or more depending on the rest of your credit file. Paying it off later may soften the impact, but the mark itself doesn’t leave the report early. Even $50 or $100 in accumulated monthly fees is enough to trigger the whole sequence. Formally canceling through the website or by certified mail is always cheaper than fixing a collections entry.
If You’re Charged After Canceling
Watch your bank or credit card statements for at least two full billing cycles after you cancel. Most post-cancellation charges are processing delays rather than deliberate billing, and the fastest fix is contacting your home club directly with your confirmation number, email, or certified mail receipt.
If the club won’t reverse the charge, the Fair Credit Billing Act gives you 60 days from the date of the billing statement containing the disputed charge to dispute it in writing with your credit card issuer.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1666 – Correction of Billing Errors The issuer must investigate and cannot try to collect the disputed amount while the investigation is pending. If you paid by bank debit rather than credit card, ask your bank about an ACH dispute; the process is different but can still recover the funds.
