To cancel an MPP warranty, submit a signed written cancellation request to MPP Co., Inc. or to the dealership that sold you the plan. You can cancel at any point during the coverage period, and your refund is calculated from the time and mileage remaining on the contract.1Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. What Is an Extended Warranty or Vehicle Service Contract? How much you get back depends on when you cancel, whether you’ve filed any claims, and whether the vehicle is still financed.
Get the Form and Send It In
MPP posts a downloadable cancellation form on its customer service page. You can also reach the cancellation department at 1-800-747-4400, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. CST, or by email at mppouccancels@mpp.com.2MPP – Mechanical Protection Plan. Customer Service Many dealerships will hand you the same form through their finance office if you’d rather do it in person.
The form has to be signed by the contract holder. Filling out an online inquiry, leaving a voicemail, or sending an unsigned email won’t start the process.3MPP – Mechanical Protection Plan. Transfer A Contract Print the paperwork, sign it, and submit it one of three ways: hand it to the dealership’s finance department and ask for a stamped copy, mail it certified with return receipt to MPP Co., Inc., 8500 Shawnee Mission Parkway, Merriam, Kansas 66202, or email a signed scan to mppouccancels@mpp.com.4MPP Co., Inc. Going directly to MPP is often faster than routing through the dealership, and it’s the only option if the selling dealership has closed. Either way, keep copies. The date MPP receives your signed form sets the cutoff for the refund calculation, so proof of delivery matters.
What to Have Ready
Before you fill out the form, pull together:
- Your agreement number, printed on the original MPP contract.
- Your current odometer reading, which MPP uses to figure out how much coverage you’ve used.
- Your Vehicle Identification Number, visible through the base of the windshield on the driver’s side or on your registration and insurance.
The form also asks for the effective date you want coverage to end and a short reason, such as selling the vehicle or choosing to self-insure. The name on the form must match the name on the original contract exactly. Mismatches create processing delays that can add weeks to your refund.
How the Refund Is Calculated
MPP contracts include a free look window, typically 30 or 60 days depending on your state, during which you can cancel for a full refund of the purchase price as long as you haven’t filed any claims.5MPP. Mechanical Protection Plan State Specific Disclosures That’s the cleanest exit and the one that returns the most money.
Once that window closes, MPP switches to a pro-rata formula based on the lesser of the time remaining or the miles remaining on the contract.6MPP – Mechanical Protection Plan. Mechanical Protection Plan State Specific Disclosures Whichever measure leaves you with less unused coverage is the one that controls your refund.
Cancellation Fee
Most refunds processed after the free look period have a cancellation fee deducted. The fee runs $25 to $50 in most states, though some states cap it as a percentage of the contract price instead.5MPP. Mechanical Protection Plan State Specific Disclosures The state-specific disclosures attached to your contract show the exact fee that applies to you.
Prior Claims
If MPP paid for any repairs while your plan was active, the cost of those claims comes out of your refund. This applies during and after the free look period.5MPP. Mechanical Protection Plan State Specific Disclosures If MPP has already paid out a significant amount on your behalf, run the math before you cancel. What’s left after deductions may not be worth losing the coverage.
If the Vehicle Is Still Financed
When you still owe money on the car, the refund doesn’t come to you. MPP sends it directly to your lender, and it’s applied to the outstanding principal on your auto loan. Your monthly payment doesn’t change, but the loan pays off sooner.
Follow up with both MPP and your lender after you submit. Ask the lender to confirm when the credit posts. If 60 days go by without any sign of the refund on your loan statement, call MPP and ask for proof that the refund was issued and where it was sent.
If you’ve already paid the loan off, say so when you submit the cancellation form and attach a payoff letter or a zero-balance statement. That way MPP sends the check to you rather than to a lender that no longer holds a lien.
Consider Transferring Instead
If you’re canceling because you sold the car, a transfer may be the better move. MPP plans are transferable to the new owner, and the transfer keeps the full remaining coverage intact with no pro-rata reduction.3MPP – Mechanical Protection Plan. Transfer A Contract That intact coverage often adds more to the sale price than a post-deduction refund would put in your pocket. Transfers, like cancellations, must be submitted in writing and signed.
Refund Timing and What to Do If It’s Late
MPP’s state-specific disclosures set a 30-day refund deadline in several states, and some states impose a 10 percent monthly penalty on refunds not paid within 30 to 45 days of MPP receiving the signed cancellation form.5MPP. Mechanical Protection Plan State Specific Disclosures Check the disclosures attached to your contract to see which timeline and penalty apply.
If the refund is late, start by calling MPP at 1-800-747-4400 with your agreement number and proof of submission. If that doesn’t move things, file a complaint with your state’s attorney general or with the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.7Federal Trade Commission.
