To cancel an MBNA credit card, contact MBNA directly: UK cardholders can close through the mobile app, online banking, by phone, or by letter, while Canadian cardholders need to call, use secure chat, or write in. MBNA will not treat an unused card as closed, so an explicit request is required, and once the account is shut it cannot be reopened. A little preparation before you make contact prevents trailing charges, lost rewards, and avoidable damage to your credit score.
Sort These Out Before You Make the Call
The most common mistake is closing the account before handling a few things that get much harder to fix afterward. None of this takes long.
Pay Down the Balance, and Ask for a Payoff Figure
You don’t need a zero balance to request closure. MBNA’s account agreement lets you ask at any time, but the agreement itself doesn’t end until everything owed is paid, and interest keeps accruing on any remaining balance after closure.1MBNA. MBNA Account Agreement
Even after you pay what looks like the full statement balance, a small residual interest charge can appear on your next statement. Interest accrues daily between your statement closing date and the day your payment posts. If you’ve carried a balance recently, ask the representative for your payoff amount rather than relying on the statement figure. Paying that number clears any trailing interest.
If your account is in credit from an overpayment or refund, ask MBNA to return the surplus to you by cheque or electronic transfer before the account is finalized.
Move Recurring Payments to Another Card
Any subscription or pre-authorized payment tied to your MBNA card will fail once the account closes, and you remain responsible for pre-authorized payments charged after closure. Each merchant has to be updated by you.1MBNA. MBNA Account Agreement Go back through the last few statements, catch every recurring charge, and move them before you cancel. Missing one can mean late fees from the merchant or a service cutoff.
Redeem Your Rewards
When the account closes, benefits, services, and coverages end immediately, even if a balance remains.1MBNA. MBNA Account Agreement For MBNA Canada’s Choice Rewards program, you have 120 days after closure to redeem accumulated points if the account was in good standing. After that, the points are gone.2MBNA. Choice Rewards Program Terms and Conditions Other rewards programs may have different rules, so check the specific terms for your card. The safest move is to redeem everything before you call.
Download Your Statements
If you receive paperless statements, save or print copies first. Once the account is shut, you lose access to the online banking portal and cannot retrieve past statements.3MBNA. Managing Your Account FAQs Hold on to them for your records, especially for tax or expense tracking.
Tell Any Authorized Users
Closing the account removes the credit line from any authorized user’s profile too. That can raise their utilization ratio and shorten their average account age, both of which may lower their credit score.4TransUnion. How Closing Accounts Can Affect Credit Scores Give them notice.

Whichever channel you use, ask for a reference number or written confirmation. If you send a letter, registered or certified mail gives you proof of delivery.
Expect a Retention Offer
When you call to cancel, the representative will often try to keep you. Common incentives include bonus reward points, a waived annual fee, or a statement credit. Some offers require you to hit a spending target within a few months; others don’t.
Whether to accept depends on why you’re leaving. If an annual fee is the problem and they waive it, that may be enough. If the card no longer fits how you spend, bonus points don’t change that. The representative may ask your reason and try more than one offer. You’re not obligated to accept any of them. State clearly that you want to close the account and they will process it.
After the Account Closes
Confirmation and Last Steps
You should receive confirmation of closure by letter or email. Cut through the magnetic strip and the chip on the physical card so it can’t be used fraudulently while closure finishes processing, and remove any virtual card number from your digital wallet.
Watch the account for one more billing cycle. Residual interest or a late-posting merchant charge may still appear, and you’ll need to pay it to fully discharge the agreement. MBNA will send a final statement for any remaining amount owed.
What Closure Does to Your Credit Score
Closing a credit card can raise your credit utilization ratio, the percentage of your total available credit you’re using. When MBNA’s limit comes off your profile, the same balances on other cards represent a larger share of a smaller total. A common guideline is to keep utilization under 30 percent, and closing a high-limit card can push you past that quickly.7Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Does It Hurt My Credit to Close a Credit Card?
If the MBNA card is one of your older accounts, closure can also shorten your average credit history length. Scoring models favor longer histories.4TransUnion. How Closing Accounts Can Affect Credit Scores The impact may be minor and temporary, or more significant, depending on how many other accounts you have and how long you’ve held them. If this card is your only one, or your oldest by a wide margin, think twice.
How Long the Closed Account Shows on Your Credit Report
A closed account in good standing can stay on your credit report for up to ten years. If it was past due at the time of closure, it drops off seven years after the initial missed payment.8Experian. How Long Do Closed Accounts Stay on Your Credit Report? Pull your credit report a month or two after closure and confirm it’s recorded as closed at your request, not closed by the lender. That distinction matters to future creditors. If it’s wrong, dispute it with the credit bureau.
Closing an Account for Someone Who Has Died
If you’re an executor or next of kin, closing an MBNA card requires extra documentation. You’ll generally need a copy of the death certificate and, depending on the situation, legal documents showing your authority to act for the estate.9Equifax. Credit and Debt After Death: What You Need to Know Call MBNA, explain the situation, and the representative will tell you exactly what they need.
Also notify the credit bureaus so they can flag the file as deceased, which helps prevent identity theft. Keep copies of everything you send, and use registered or certified mail for documents sent by post.9Equifax. Credit and Debt After Death: What You Need to Know The estate is generally responsible for any outstanding balance, not surviving family members personally, unless they were joint account holders.
If You’re in the United States
MBNA’s U.S. operations were acquired by Bank of America in 2006, and former MBNA accounts were converted to Bank of America cards. If you still carry a card with MBNA branding from that era, contact Bank of America to manage or close it. The instructions above apply only to MBNA’s current operations in the United Kingdom and Canada.
