You can cancel a Geek Squad Protection Plan at any time, for any reason, and Best Buy charges no cancellation fee. How to cancel a Geek Squad Protection Plan comes down to picking one of four channels (online, phone, in a store, or by mail) and knowing what refund to expect based on whether you paid upfront or pay monthly.1Best Buy. The Four Ways to Cancel
Any of these works. Pick the one that gives you a confirmation you can hold on to.
- Online. Sign in to your Best Buy account and open the Plans & Subscriptions page at BestBuy.com/services/planlist. Select the plan and follow the prompts. You’ll get a digital confirmation when it processes.
- Phone. Call 1-800-433-5778 (1-800-GEEKSQUAD). You’ll pass through an automated menu before reaching an agent. Ask for a cancellation confirmation number before you hang up and write it down.
- In store. Visit any Best Buy. Bring your receipt or Plan ID so the associate can pull the right contract, and you’ll leave with a printed confirmation.
- Mail. Send a written cancellation request with a copy of the plan document and your original receipts to: GSP Plans, ATTN: Cancellations, P.O. Box 9312, Minneapolis, MN 55440-9312.
Mail is the slowest route and the hardest to track. If you use it, send it with delivery confirmation. Phone and online give you immediate proof the request was received.1Best Buy. Geek Squad Protection Plan Terms and Conditions
What To Have Ready
The one piece of information that makes everything else faster is your Plan ID or contract number. It appears on your original service contract and in the confirmation email Best Buy sent when you bought the plan. Searching your inbox for “Geek Squad” or “Best Buy Order Confirmation” usually surfaces it.
Lost both the email and the paper receipt? A Best Buy associate can look up your purchase using the credit or debit card you paid with. My Best Buy members can also be looked up by phone number, email, or member ID. Purchases made with cash or check by non-members, and anything older than ten years, cannot be retrieved this way.2Best Buy. Receipts for Best Buy Purchases
If you have plans on more than one product, have the model and serial numbers of the device you’re cancelling coverage on so the agent cancels the right contract.
Your Refund if You Paid Upfront
If you paid for the plan in full at purchase (what Best Buy calls a One-Time-Pay Plan), the refund depends on timing.
- Cancel within 30 days of purchase and you get a full refund of what you paid, minus the value of any service already provided under the plan.
- Cancel after 30 days and you get a prorated refund based on the unexpired portion of the term, minus the cost of any service already provided.
The math is straightforward. A two-year plan bought for $200 and cancelled at the one-year mark with no claims returns roughly half. If Best Buy did a $75 repair during that year, that cost is subtracted from the refund.1Best Buy. Geek Squad Protection Plan Terms and Conditions
There is no administrative or cancellation fee. The current terms state plainly that “there are no fees to cancel this Plan.”1Best Buy. Geek Squad Protection Plan Terms and Conditions
Your Refund if You Pay Monthly
Monthly plans come in two forms. A Monthly Paid Term Plan runs for a fixed duration and is billed monthly. A Continuous Monthly Plan renews indefinitely until you cancel. The refund rules are the same for both.
You get a prorated refund for the days left in the current billing month after your cancellation date. If you used any services during the month you cancel, Best Buy can deduct that cost. You won’t be billed for future months.
One number matters here: it can take up to 60 days for the cancellation to show on your credit card statement. That is longer than most people expect, so don’t be alarmed if one more charge posts. Keep your cancellation confirmation in case a charge appears after the 60-day window and you need to dispute it.1Best Buy. Geek Squad Protection Plan Terms and Conditions
Monthly Plans Keep Charging Until You Cancel
Continuous Monthly Plans auto-renew every month and will keep charging your card until you actively cancel. Best Buy can also raise the price on renewal. After the first 36 months of coverage, they can stop renewing, offer a different plan with different terms, or change the renewal price based on the age and condition of your product, with at least 60 days’ written notice before any of those changes.3Best Buy. If you’ve decided you no longer want the coverage, cancel now rather than at the end of a billing cycle. There’s no advantage to waiting, since you get a prorated refund for the remaining days anyway.
Transfer Instead of Cancel
Selling or giving away the covered device? You don’t have to cancel and take the proration hit. Geek Squad Protection plans transfer to a new owner at no charge. Call 1-800-433-5778 to start the transfer.4Best Buy. 2-Year Accidental Geek Squad Protection
Active coverage is a selling point on a marketplace listing. A laptop or TV with protection still in force is worth more to a buyer, and the transfer costs you nothing.
After You Cancel
Save the confirmation number, printed receipt, or email you received. That’s your proof if a billing question comes up later. Watch your credit card or bank statement for at least two full billing cycles after cancellation, and remember that for monthly plans the final charge can take up to 60 days to clear.
If an upfront refund hasn’t landed after a reasonable window, call Best Buy customer service with your confirmation number. If monthly charges continue past the 60-day mark, your card issuer’s dispute process is the reliable fallback, and the confirmation number makes winning that dispute simple.
